my brother came up with an idea that should be able to tell me which one is the problem. he said get a glass jar etc fill with petrol and get the inlet from the pump and put it into the jar if its not the pump there should be a blast of fuel again and if it is the pump it will do the same thing as it is now. also does anyone else know what voltage the pump should hae as i metered it and there was only 11v which seems ok but i thought it should be 12v.

ok i bit the bullet yesterday and bought micks 280zx i have norrowed it down to fuel. all sensors are working but fuel pressure is low, the presure is not even as high as my 260z fuel pump. when i got the car it drove 120km with no problem like mick explained to me it was burbly down low untill you hit 3000 rpm or put your foot into it then it drove like a dream no lack of power or anything but when i got home it started playing up and had no power and when you hit the accelerator it just died i thought i may have ran out of fuel due to a dodgy fuel gauge so i went to the fuel station and got more fuel put it in and still the same thing. so this afternoon i put some fuel in the air cleaner and sure enough started strait away ran fine no lack of power down low or anthing, well till the fuel in the filter ran out. so heres my question could this be the sighn of the fuel pump breaking down or is it more likely the strainer in the tank is blocked.

surprisingly it still sucks cold air where it is well colder air anyway, the inside of the tube is smooth as silk and the heat from the extractors doesn't seem to penetrate much due to the decrease in height over theoriginal air cleaner. i made the air intake a tad longer than the original to help with air getting to the back carbie so it doesn't run rich and also made it basic so it can be made again if need be but in the end it does work quite well and makes one hell of a sucking noise. ill post some more pics next week when i have my tubing connected and it sealed up completely air tight, i was originally going to turbo or supercharge the carbs and i like the option still being there.
one more thing its zinc coated not galvanised it weighs about 1 to 2kg but with the 3 bolts holding it to the carbs its not bothering anything.

well i like may others was sick of my carbies sucking in hot air so as the title states i constructed my own cold air intake, i have plans to run a piece of 3" tubing through the hole in the radiator support. its made from gal 100X100 steel tubing with a 3" inlet and i was quite shocked at the increase in power. well here it is.

i no longer have it wired in i had it wired direct to the coil and yes its a (-) not a + and i had it on the negitve, as for pics ill get some up tomorow of my car and the tacho as i have fabed a air intake etc. i have searched the net and it mentions you can get a booster for the signal for the tacho but cant find one and im sure theres an easier answer somewhere i just thort i would check her fist, thanks for all the info keep it coming.

the actual tacho is accurate its just very slow, also that was the first thing i done its as if theres not enough voltage going to it but there is as all other gauges on it work fine eg digital temp, oil, volts.

i use 10w30 usualy castol edge or magnatech ive never had a drahmah with it never blows smoke and always runs sweet, as for plugs if your using it as a daily driver id go with ngk bp5es plugs as they burn a little hotter and dont tend to fowl as easy yet again no drahmah with them, as for fuel i use 95ron or 98ron fuel with no additives and there is now noticable were on any parts but the additives are up to the individual.
hope this helps
