Hi Huw What condition are the carbs in? Have you recently rebuilt them? If it has been a while since you kicked her over it may be possible for a few issues to arise. The Achilles Heal of the SU carbs is the throttle shaft. Overtime they tend to wear out and require a rebushing. Once they are worn they leak air and make it virtually impossible to balance. Another problem could be the needle and seat. The seat tends to dry out and crack over time, I believe they are rubber from memory. This causes an inconsistent amount of fuel to be delivered to the engine. Again this would make tuning impossible. If you are running an L28 it would pay to check that the needles and seats in the carbs are correct for the displacement of the engine otherwise it will run lean. Best of luck! There is a B&M fuel systems in Richmond who cater to the SU carb I believe you can find contact details in the links area. Cheers

Hi everyone, I know a guy Arne from classiczcars.com is selling a simple plug that allows you to adapt the 280zx 60amp alternator to a 240z. This is a good upgrade because it has a higher ampage output but also alows the removal of the voltage regulator VR since it's an internal regulator IR. The other advantages are you can simply replace the alternator with an original one for shows if you are running in concourse categories. You can find more details here: http://home.comcast.net/~1971.240z/alt-adapt.html There is a slight discount for 10 or more orders so I am wondering how many others may be interested in such a purchase.

Thanks for posting that Sulio. I think we may need a thread dedicated to wheel fitament to Z's. It seems like alot of people are confused about what works and what doesn't. I for one understand what PCD is required and I understand what offsets are etc.. However it would be good to have a tutorial on how to measure everything up and how to tell what wheels would work and some common combinations based upon standard/non standard suspension and with and without flares etc..

I don't think it's Vintage as it seems too clean to be second hand. I think it's a copy of an old style of jacket/jumper. Perhaps from the days when Datsun's were battling it out on the Rally Fields .

Hi there, I recently replaced my struts in my 240z with Tokico 5-way adjustable shocks. You can often find a set of shocks floating around on ebay. Sometimes local distributors place them on ebay because there old stock they want to get rid of. I'm not sure what budget you have in mind, but doing it yourself won't save that much money. It's a relatively simple job with the right tools. I had trouble with mine because someone had done the upper gland nuts up way too tight. As stated above it's probably a good idea to replace bushings and other suspension componentry all at the same time if possible and within budget. You will certainly notice a transformation in the way the car handles. I'm pretty sure the 2+2's have different length inserts or they are different width. I can't recall I know I've been told before but not having had a 2+2 for a number of years doesn't really help. Best of luck!

Hi everyone, I thought I'd post about a T-shirt a friend spotted in the city. I figured I had to have it. It did afterall have Datsun on it. I'm curious though has anyone seen one like it before? From what I can tell it's some sort of cycling jumper/jacket. My girlfriend bought it for me from a store in the city not exactly sure where it is but it's near Swanston St somewhere towards Flinders St Station. I'm definately going to have to wear it while driving my 240z around . From a far it looks like I'm a Ferrari fan boy though . While on topic anyone got interesting Datsun shirts?

While I can't move the original post to the drive related post I can extend on this thread by saying I think it's a great idea. It would also make for an interesting piece, I'd also like to know where car HS30 0004 got to as that would certainly make for an interesting article. I did email back this freelance writer however I never heard from him again. I should have his mobile number so perhaps if we can get a few people together who are willing to participate I can try calling him and making arrangements. Cheers, Gavin.

Yeah the larger 16" superlites do look a hell of alot better than the 15" ones. I much prefer the spoke design on those. Do you know what sort of price you'd be looking at for a set? Can you get them to customised offsets and PCD? The only complaint I'd have is the Superlites seem to be fairly heavy I'm not sure what Watanabe wheels weigh but they are apparently very light. The Wat's are 'genuine old skool' these are replica's. However it comes down to pricing I guess. I'd love to see a set in person. I like the idea of buying 8" for the rear and swapping them over later. If its possible with the offsets etc..

I believe Sulio has had good luck with Sicaflex so far.

Hi guys, the steering coupler bush is the one that goes mid way up the steering shaft and is circular right? I don't think mine has been replaced, does it really make that much of a difference? I guess this is another reason why we wanted the group buy on the nolethane kit from the states. I should chase up Nathan over that. I've done the rack bushings.

Well I'm not sure about the American models and what they got exactly especially in the case of a 280zx. I do know that some were fitted with a Borg Warner 5spd I believe possibly the 280zx Turbo. In Australia I think the early 240z gearbox from say 1970 - early 72 had the porsche style syncro's in them possibly these were brass not 100% sure about it though. I currently have a 260z 2 seater box which I believe is difficult or expensive to get synchro's for. So I'm definately interested on where to source these and what part #'s they are. I just had a look for a possible US gearbox reference but couldn't find it sorry.

What you would like your Z to look like?
gav240z replied to Toecutter's topic in General Discussions
Hi guys, I don't want to ruin your day but I think you may be hoping for the impossible. After reading many discussions on classiczcars.com and comments especially by member Alan Thomas (a 240zg owner) going by the alias HS30-H. Apparently he has spoken to OS Giken about the possibility of remaking the TC-24 head. From what he says the old wooden templates they used to mould the head became warped and useless and any attempt to build the heads again would require alot of investment $$$ from OS Giken. It is apparently not profitable for them to attempt this again since the original kit comprised of many parts including new pistons, harmonic balancer, timing assembly and the like. It really was just the L-series block in use and crank + rods. If you are really keen on the idea of a twin cam 6 well I'm sure you know the RB series is probably the best option. I'm sorry if this bursts your bubble, however many have thought along the lines you are and have reached the same dead end. By all means write them a letter, the last thing I want to do is discourage anyone. I'd love to see a twin cam L-series in a Z. For more details search classiczcars.com http://www.classiczcars.com/forums/showthread.php?t=17302&highlight=OS+Giken http://www.datrats.com.au/OS%20GIKEN%20ENGINES.htm http://www.classiczcars.com/forums/showthread.php?t=13949&highlight=OS+Giken http://www.classiczcars.com/forums/showthread.php?t=16240&highlight=OS+Giken Good luck! -
Hi Dave, I know on my 240z about a year ago I managed to snap mine after a day of hard work down at Calder Park. It may be broken in the middle somewhere and not immediately obvious. If the cable spins at both ends then I guess it's fine and you may be correct in that it could be the dash or the gearbox end. I'm a bit unfamiliar with the 280zx dash configuration so I don't know what to suggest in that area. I'd be suprised if the plastic cog in the gearbox has broken, but I guess like anything it's possible. Try troubleshooting the cable again and get back to us. Cheers,

Although this has been discussed I'm going to make it a sticky so that anyone looking in this area will be able to find details regarding the nationals in 2007. It's good fun to see all the cars on display from around Australia.

Hi everyone, I figured this would be a fun thread considering all the strange and out of this world Zed cars I've seen in my time. It is by no means aimed at offending any Zed owners, however we have all come across zeds that have made us go "what the?". Some of you may remember the infamous 4x4 zeds and some pretty tacky paint jobs etc.. I would have loved to start off with a picture, however I recently bought a new computer and I am still in the process of backups and transferring files. So without further adieu please post up your best (worst) pics.

Hey Dave, that's great news apparently Steve Newing has been in the game for quite a while when it comes to Datsun's and Zcars. I believe his website is here: http://www.efihardware.com/

I did a short welding course at my local tafe. Swinburne Tafe in Hawthorn to be precise. It was definately an interesting experience and you certainly learn alot about safety. For this reason alone I wouldn't buy a welder especially an OXY or Arc welder until I had done a course like this. In most cases when it comes to cars, you would want a MIG welder. Unfortunately I didn't get as much time on the MIG as I did on the OXY or ARC however it was fun all the same. I never got around to fixing my old 240z and I was a bit nervous about performing any welding work on the car, since it was so original and so straight. Looking back I regret not giving it a go. Infact I'm thinking of doing most of the body work on my current Z when the time comes. Good luck and try and have fun!
