What parts would you like offered through the club?
gav240z replied to gav240z's topic in General Discussions
While I may drive a red Z, that doesn't make me Santa . Hey Lurch what does FG? stand for? I can't work it out for the life of me. How do you guys feel about reproduction diamond vinyl kits? I guess you would want to see a sample first? I know i would. Reskinned dashboards anyone? How about JDM parts like the ones here: http://www.datsunspirit.com/ Anything tickle your fancy? -
****** EDIT ****** NOW A POLL VOTE NOW! ****** EDIT ****** Hi everyone, I have been thinking about what parts people want and have a hard time finding or would like to be readily available through the club. Some items I thought might be of interest to members include:- -Diamond Vinyl Interior Pieces -Replacement Carpets -Weather Stripping - LD28 Crankshafts - L14 & L20A Rods (probably impossible to get) - Powder Coated Valve Covers - Polished Valve Covers - Repaired Centre Consoles - Watanabe Wheels - Reconditioned Engines or Cylinder Heads - R200 LSD Diffs - CV Joint Conversion Kits Or anything else you might think you need or would like to be able to purchase through the club rather than have to order from overseas. I know the above looks more like a wishlist but I'm curious what are some common needs for Z people. I may look into striking a deal with some suppliers to get us some discounts at some stage down the track. Should I make this a poll?

Also keep in mind that on alot of Zcars the seats have plastic spacers where they bolt to the floor. If he's too tall you can remove the seats and take out the spacers which give an extra inch or so for head room.

Hi everyone, I thought it would be interesting to read how everyone funds their projects. Obviously car restoration is an expensive exercise so how does everyone get the money together? Do you have a stash of cash you saved before you started? Do you sell Zcar parts on ebay? Did you rob a bank? Do you mow more lawns than Jim's mowing? Are you an international man of mystery with deep pockets? You get the idea, it may also be a good topical discussion if you tell us how you hide the expenses from the other half? Look forward to your replies.

The same question was sent through via club email and I thought I'd post my response here for others with a similar question in future. Hi Jeremy, I take it you recently signed up on the forums & asked a similar question. We have had several others ask similar questions in the past and if you do a search on the site you will find some good info. From my experience with Zeds the best cars to buy are those that are as original as possible with minimal rust and original paint work if possible. I say this because too many have been resprayed and rust bogged up. If you find a relatively original car with minimal rust or accident damage your 50 steps ahead of the next guy with a non-original car and lots of body work to do. Mechanical work is relatively easy and fun! These cars rarely experience major mechanical issues unless maintenance & service is few and far between. An early 240z is hard to find in good condition for a cheap price, when I got into these cars at the age of 17 which was 7 years ago now it was hard to find a good 240z at the right price. A good 260z however can still be picked up at a relatively good price although 2 seaters are climbing in value. Most prefer the 2 seater shape, you may not mind and therefore you have the option of a 2+2. For me the 240z is the original classic and there are enough differences in the early model to set it apart from the later 260z's. If you want an original classic car buy a 240z. If you plan to modify it and slap in a turbo engine at some stage the heavier but stronger & more refined 260z is the way to go. Kind regards, Gavin.

Hi 570Z I'm not sure what happened. What size are the images your trying to upload? If they are too large it might not work. If you need some help I can probably upload them for you. Cheers Gavin.

Hi Craig, My first advice with any car particularly a Z is never rush into buying anything. Yes the 280zx on Ebay looks nice, but as Dave said you really need to see it in person. You could be in for a rude suprise, although I do admit from the pics it seems like an honest car. I'd be looking at purchasing the 260z myself, but I prefer the early S30 shape in 2 seater form. I won't get into arguements over what's better and all that. I'm sure there are plenty of threads on the net that cover that. Judging by the pics of the red 260z I'd say it's probably worth $6-$8k I realise the owner has put alot of money into it (don't we all?). However the modifications are somewhat a personal choice. Those aftermarket seats are not the best. For the street fine, but for track work not really. The dash looks like it has a half cap and I'm never a fan of those. Everything is painted red, me I like chrome and polished metal myself. It's loaded with some goodies like R200 LSD. Tokico's, King Springs & Triple's but the other bits and pieces don't really increase it's value ie: SAAS steering wheels. Of course this is all very subjective to you, you may like these items. To me these items do not increase the value of a Z. My first concern on any Zcar is the body work. This is without a doubt the most expensive item on the car to repair and labour intensive. I don't know the quality of the car's body work and possibly the owner has pictures of the restoration work which would help greatly. Anyway that's my 2cents. *Remember there is always a better car for sales and it's usually right after you just bought your new Z.

Hi Rob, welcome to the site. We don't have many 280z owners, I only know of 1 other and he owned a 280z 2+2 which he was recently trying to sell if I'm not mistaken. We have a thread here specifically about the requirements of stock suspension and ZG flares and many other combo's. Take a look here: http://www.viczcar.com/forums/about788.html It is my understanding though that the 280z suspension is a little different to 240z & early 260z suspension. In that the struts are slightly wider in diammeter. Best of luck.

Yeah it does look good, not usually a fan of the big whale tail but in this case it was ok. Did you see the videos? I felt for him when he hit the wall, but I guess that's part of motorsport. Autocross looks like awesome fun though. http://video.google.de/videoplay?docid=-6199082329652448119&hl=de There were more videos but I didn't get them working.

Hi there, I have read about this problem before. I believe one of our members is familiar with how to fix the problem. I will PM him with a link to this thread and hopefully he will respond. If I had to guess I'd say you need the oil pickup and oil pan from a 240z or 260z. I think the sump design on the Skyline L24 is different amongst some other differences in that particular L24.

Hi everyone, I got an email today from a Fairlady 260z owner in Switzerland who sent through a link to his website. http://www.dbi.ch/zcarracingteam/seite1.html It's a nice looking racing Z I thought everyone else may enjoy looking through the website although it is in another language. Seems to be a pretty powerful Z.

Special Offer From Advanced Engine Management Pty Ltd.
gav240z replied to gav240z's topic in General Discussions
Well it's only a limited offer until a certain date. The new CMS system I am currently working on implementing into the rest of the site will allow for banner advertisements. So anyone wishing to promote anything can purchase banner advertising from us. Or depending on circumstances I can set up a news section for offers and that kind of thing. This thread will be deleted after the offer expires anyway. -

I just took a look at the image you posted of the SU carburetors you have. http://www.viczcar.com/v-web/gallery/displayimage.php?album=lastup&cat=0&pos=1 These are not 240z \"Hitachi\" carburetors. I can tell by a few things the first is the dash pot lid. The dash pot itself has a shorter height than the 240z style ones. Also the bottom where the mixture adjustment is you'll probably find a hex nut. On the 240z style ones its actually a rounded tap (hard to explain). Of course the biggest give away is that a 240z style SU Carb has actual Hitachi symbols on it. If you look under the oil cap and in many other places of your Z you will see what the hitachi symbol is. Take a look at this page for some differences http://www.ztherapy.com/technical_stuff/spotterguides/zcar/240spotter.htm Cheers Gavin.

What you would like your Z to look like?
gav240z replied to Toecutter's topic in General Discussions
Hey Sulio, love the maroon ZG with Watanabe's absolutely perfect. Myself I think I'm going for something like this eventually. The silver Z looks like a real possibility. -
Yeah it's an awesome car for sure. Here is another link to a video of it It sounds great, love the fact it's an L28 .

Hi Evan, I'll PM you Len Brennan's Mobile number, if that doesn't work I'll send you his home number after checking with him that it's ok. I think Len doesn excellent work and perhaps over engineer's in many instances. His Roll Cage is a work of art, I know who I'd ask to build my cage if I get one . What year is your 260z Evan? I think it was a 75 from memory and would more than likely be more like a 240z body style than the later 260z style.

Vlad have you got a mechanical fuel pump? You can see the fuel pump in front of the spark plugs hanging off the engine. It's attached to the timing chain just below the valve cover. If so you may need to crank it over for a while to get the fuel coming up the lines. It can take a while for the engine to kick over after running out of fuel because of the air in the lines. As Warren said running the tank dry has the potential of picking up the crap in the bottom of the tank. So check your fuel filter, remove it if neccessary and try blowing on it if you don't feel any air coming through the other end it's blocked up. Good luck! PS: What petrol station is it stuck at? I need some spare parts

Mitsubishi Distributor for L-series Engine (Electronic)
gav240z posted a topic in Electrical systems
Ok well I have had this distributor for quite a while. The only problem is I don't know what model of Z or L-series it came from? Everyone does the E12 Module distributor upgrade but this is a different design, dare I say but a superior more reliable and accurate dizzy. I have provided some pictures as a reference. Has anyone got one of these? Does anyone recall seeing one on a 280zx or perhaps another injected L-series? -
Hi Aaron, thanks for the offer and advice. I'll see what I need and get back to you. Nick thanks for the suggestions, I didn't like the idea of a cheap dolly and hammer on ebay it just seemed, well cheap and nasty. Regarding the compressor I had read on a few how to websites that it was important to have a bigger compressor & although you can do the job with a cheaper lower capacity one at the end of the day an air compressor is a universal tool and I may as well spend the good money once and buy what I need. Cheers, Gavin.

Hi everyone, I've been doing some looking around for some panel beating equipment and couldn't find much in Google. So I looked in the yellow pages found a guy in Richmond, who isn't open weekends due to not much business. I am looking for a few items, depending on the costs involved with buying the right gear and stuff like that. The first thing I was looking at was a Hammer and Dolly. I found one a kit on Ebay but it seemed too cheap to be any good. Is there much difference between the kits you can get? Does anyone have a particular brand they recommend. Likewise with spray painting equipment, does anyone have a brand of compressor to recommend? I've seen some el-cheapo's and don't want to buy something that will give me a garbage result. When it comes to air compressors are all fittings universal? Let's say I have an air rachet, air gun, air drill or dremmel. Do all compressors allow for these kinds of attachments? I'm looking to repair the scratch down the side of my car. See http://www.viczcar.com/forums/viewtopic.php?t=790 for more details. But at the same time I'd like to spray a spare bonnet I have here.

Hi Warren, I am interested in this modification. My ZX IR Alternator is at a mechanic but I am hopefully picking it up soon. I plan to do this modification after I recondition the ZX alternator, so it's a planned future upgrade but the current alternator works fine and I haven't been driving the Z much of late so I haven't been in too much of a hurry.

Damn gotta be quick around here....I thought I had that one in the bag . There is a guy in the US importing lots of cool Japanese gear his website is www.datsunspirit.com I believe he has got access to some reproduction ones not sure if there is any difference between stock Nissan ones and the ones he gets but that's always an alternative I guess.
