  1. Thanks Mike you were correct I did upgrade to 2.0.20 with all the other changes I've made. I was thinking the quote problem was something I did with all the changes I made to the phpBB source code. The only problem is it only calls the function to set up the quotes when you post so any posts that were made will need to be edited and posted again.
  2. It's better to be safe than sorry mate. I'm not sure exactly what the problem is but I'd be checking ball joints, bearings, tie rods to begin with.
  3. Hi Mike, thanks for the pictures I had a feeling that was what you meant. So are all the shafts joined through all the carbs? Then you have 1 single lever that controls all the butterflies? I haven't mounted the Triples yet because of the throttle linkage situation. Do you know where I can get a kit like this from? Would save me the headache of fabricating one for my car. That speed technology set up really is a marvel, you have done well with it I'm very jealous  .
  4. Sorry about the long winded answer but there's not really a straight answer. I would guess 30HP gain at the most on my current motor. The best way to find out is a dyno tune  .
  5. I have absolutely no idea what triple carbs will do for performance on my current engine. My current motor is as follows. L28 Block Flat Tops. Early E88 head with N42 size valves. Port Work (To what extent I'm unsure). Mild Cam (Don't know the specs not too lumpy). ZX Distributor. 240z SU's with richer needles for L28. The motor goes fairly well with the SU's. However it runs out of puff around 6000rpm. I would imagine the Triple Mikuni's would allow it to breathe alot better up top and improve throttle response and as you kindly noted give her a bit of induction roar . However the reason I bought the Triples was because I'm building an L31 stroked L28. This motor although not confirmed will be something like this. - Wild camshaft profile Schneider 300 Degree's of Duration .560 Lift. - L28 with .120 thou overbore - LD28 Crankshaft - L20 or L14 or FJ20 rods - Custom Pistons - Extensive Port Work - Larger stainless valves - Possibly rewelded engine head - Port matched manifolds. On this motor I suspect the Mikuni's will really come to life and this is where they will make all the difference in power difference. I'd say that Triple 40's would be fine on my current engine as an upgrade and that SU's would probably be the perfect solution for mild - medium wil d L28's driven on the street and even for racing. It's all part of a system when you build a motor for most I'd say the SU's are adequete unless your racing or building a wild motor like I am. It's not uncommon for people to build 280HP L28's with SU's.
  6. Yeah I think the R31 calipers are the way to go personally. I was looking at R30 skylines before thinking that's what I needed when I went to centre road wreckers and they all had the bracket welded to the live axle. I have a friend who works at a brake specialty shop and can get discs and pads quite cheap. Who knows maybe he can get reco calipers too?
  7. Well done mate you finally bought a place. I still don't know why you were so desperate to move away from me lol... Let me know what your planning to do with your rear brakes.
  8. Hi Pat I assume you mean 260z and not 260zx since there was no such thing. The plastic panels are a pain to remove without breaking the little clips that hold them in. Add to that the age of these parts and they literally split apart when you try to pry them out with a screw driver. The good news is you can get these clips relatively cheap, infact I see them on ebay alot try www.ebay.com and search globally. $10 buys a pack of 15 or so.
  9. I have been given the contact details of a guy who can get Wat's landed here for about $2200 no tyres but still a good price if you ask me. Considering what I was going to pay  . The contact details of the guy who is able to get them is apprently Miki_Yokohata @ systemsunion.com Miki Yokohata if anyone wants to organise a group buy let me know because I'm considering quite a few items to buy at the moment.
  10. I just stumbled across some performance valves on ebay to suit the L-series engine. They appear to compatible with the L28 head (early at least). However my questions are about dimmeter they are the same size for the intake as a stock L28 head but the exhaust diammeter is larger. Is it common practice to install larger valves for both intake and exhaust or just enlarge the exhaust valve? This is the letter I wrote to the seller on ebay below. http://cgi.ebay.com.au/DATSUN-Nissan-L16-L18-L20B-BIG-O-S-STAINLESS-VALVES_W0QQitemZ4633317837QQcategoryZ102557QQrdZ1QQcmdZViewItem Hi mate, Yes I had a feeling they were the same. I just cross checked my book ?How to modify your Nissan/Datsun OHC Engine? by Frank Honsowertz and it appears they are suited to the early L28 head?s most likely N42, N47 but not suited to the deeper chamber P79/P90?s. The intake diameter is the same size as a standard L28 head but the exhaust side is slightly larger by about 3mm. The reference I have says L28 valve specs are as follows: Intake 44mm and exhaust 35mm. In the description it says OAL 4.62? is this valve length? My book says the length of the valves is 4.53? for intake and 4.57? for exhaust. Not sure if this can be corrected just using thinner lash pads or what have you or have I got OAL totally wrong? I?m very interested in these valves however I want to verify they are the right choice first and I?d also like to know where I can get the remaining 4 that I will need to complete the set. Cheers, Gavin. Any help would be appreciated.
  11. The How to Modify your Nissan Datsun OHC book mentions Venoila pistons and I've seen some people selling custom pistons on ebay from them so I figured a link to their website might be useful for a few people here. http://www.venolia.com/imports.html#Datsun-Nissan Not much detail on the website unfortunately.

Well i'm thinking of heading down to the wreckers soon to try source some L20A rods and an N42 head and whatever other useful bits I can find. Anyone know a good wrecking yard in Victoria? which is likely to have an L20A 6 cylinder 2.0ltr L-series. Commonly found in the C210 skylines. I honestly don't think the MN47 head is worth all the effort, especially because of the round ports. I know that on Hybridz a very reputable engine builder said they are a good engine head. However I have never seen a set of headers designed for the round port head in Australia? In the US i'm sure they are more common or easy to obtain but most manufactuers cater to the square port heads. A P90 can be welded up so it's higher compression and already has the nice heart shape or kidney shape chamber. Likewise an N42 can be modified to suit. All comes down to budget I guess but I'd say all heads are equal with enough dough thrown at them. I've never seen an N47 here, but then again I haven't really been interested till recently. Infact most L28's I've seen have the N42 head. I don't think the early skylines with the L24E would carry the MN47 head. All the ones I've seen are E88 open chamber style. Oh well maybe I should take some pics when I'm at the wrecker yard next time.
  13. Hey Nathan, the question is the same as how long is a piece of string really. There are many paths you can take but to get to 250HP will be considerably more in price than 200HP. I reakon you can achieve 200HP with mild port work, a longer duration cam, electronic dizzy extractors and the right combo of top and bottom end. I think you could build such a motor for around $3500. However it depends what you have at your disposal and how resourceful you are. I'd say work out your budget first and then you will know what is realistically achievable. I don't have a set budget with my L31 build and that's probably where I'm running into trouble lol.

Hi Dave, I was playing with your Design Utility and was curious about the rod length of L20A rods? It says they are 128mm L26/L28 rods are 130.2 mm L14 are 136.6mm L24 are 133.0mm I was always under the impression that L20A rods were not quite as long as L14 rods but longer than L24 rods? Otherwise why would people use these rods over L24 and L28 rods?
  15. Hey Doco, Welcome to our site, you sound like you know what to look for in a Z car and have a reasonable perception on the cars value. I would say $7000 it would still be a good buy, but then again I haven't seen the rust in it. Those hairline cracks on the C-pilar above the 1/4 glass are quite normal. Even a friend of mine's car with a roll cage has them from body flex and it was only painted a couple of years back, There was a discussion about it on www.classiczcars.com a long time ago and some people were trying to come up with a solution but I can't for the life of me remember what it was and if it would even work. I guess anyone wanting to buy should keep in mind that it's a 77 260z and in my opinion less desirable than an early 240z especially series 1. I'd like to see it with the Simmons on it.

Hi Dave, nice utility there I take it you set it up using Javascript? I am curious where you got all the values from? I haven't been able to find a resource that gives all those rod lengths like I noticed you had the L14 rod length of 136.6 which is a figure I read somewhere but can't confirm. Can you confirm these values are accurate? I too have been reading Hybridz.org and reading some of those wonderful posts by the members there. I have recently had some set backs with my L31 build and to be honest with everyone here have been considering building an L28 turbo instead. However I'm not ready to give up just yet. Despite the fact that L14 rods are worth $700 - $1000 AUD . FWIW i've seen some N47 heads on Ebay for $50 however I wonder if you can tell me what the difference between an N47 and an MN47 head is? I take it it's named MN47 because it came in the 80's Maxima? Decisions Decisions.
  17. Yes I'm not sure what I'll do yet from the looks of it there might be some mucking about with the throttle linkage. Otherwise I may have mounted them already. I also need to work out how to adapt the fuel line to the carbs but that seems easier. I'd need to see a pic of exactly what your referring to, to properly understand what your recommending.
  18. Cool Nick I like it, how much did the covers set you back? Were they the repro ones I saw on ebay recently? I'd love to see pics of them mounted on the car when you do.
  19. Hey everyone, I finally got my triple Mikuni's. I'm very happy with them so far they appear to be in good condition. The previous owner of them told me his engine specs which were very close to my engine, so I think I might stick them on and see how I go. Does anyone know of a Mikuni specialist here in Australia? or Melbourne? I'm probably going to need jets, venturi's, chokes and what I really want is velocity stacks. http://www.viczcar.com/v-web/gallery/displayimage.php?album=1&pos=12 http://www.viczcar.com/v-web/gallery/displayimage.php?album=1&pos=13 http://www.viczcar.com/v-web/gallery/displayimage.php?album=1&pos=14 http://www.viczcar.com/v-web/gallery/displayimage.php?album=1&pos=15 http://www.viczcar.com/v-web/gallery/displayimage.php?album=1&pos=16 http://www.viczcar.com/v-web/gallery/displayimage.php?album=1&pos=17 http://www.viczcar.com/v-web/gallery/displayimage.php?album=1&pos=18
