  1. A couple of FD builds in the US of A. http://www.rx7club.com/build-threads-292/my-rx7-rotary-projects-formerly-my-blk-base-build-up-615499/ http://forums.mightycarmods.com/showthread.php?6600-Project-quot-Last-RX-7-quot-by-Herblenny And not sure I should post my build thread along side those other FDs, but here is the story of my Silver FD that I imported back from Ireland with me and some members saw last weekend on the cruise. http://www.irishrotary.com/forum/forum/rotary-vehicles/rx-7-3rd-gen-fd3s-1991-2002/5964-my-fd-rx-7-stolen
  2. Well I received all 3 books today, first impression of "How to Restore Classic Car Bodywork (Enthusiast's Restoration Manual) by Thaddeus, Martin" is that it's excellent. Lots of detailed photos and tips. It has given me the confidence to get stuck into removing the door skins on my 240z . I'll post a full review once I've had a chance to read these books in more detail.
  3. +1 good work.
  4. This could be a start? http://www.gumtree.com.au/s-ad/blackmans-bay/cars-vans-utes/1970-datsun-240z/1049090274 If you can weld
  5. All Metal Shaping Forum is good for stuff like this: http://www.allmetalshaping.com/showthread.php?t=11100 Aaron Cake Cosmo Build
  6. Thanks Lurch, I found this as another project also. Look how little those S600 pistons are! I knew I'd seen HVR before. http://www.historicvintagerestorations.com/classes.html I see you do some part time modeling for these guys?
  7. http://www.estblshd.com.au/rare-metals-in-bangkok/ Unfortunately people are still quoting these cars as being PS30-SB (PZR) cars. When they appear to be replica's only. Still nice looking examples.
  8. Well the thread title is Dream Car Build. I think that speaks volumes about finding a 5K 240z with little rust that's straight. . However if I bought #150 knowing how much work it needed I'd have probably wouldn't have put a bid in. Sometimes it is good to dive in and be a little bit of an optimist/naive - being a realist never got anyone anywhere I say . Yes you can get a 240z for 5k, but it will need total restoration before you can even drive it. Good luck!
  9. I don't know about you, what this is what I would do. 1. Obtain an L26 that's running. 2. Slot it into your car. 3. Get a replica plate made up with the chassis ID and L26 number that is the block sitting in your car. 4. Take photos and take it to VIC ROADS. If the L26 matches other vehicles you can say yes, well it was swapped into other vehicles and you have managed to obtain and track down the original engine. It's a bit of a grey area, but you're not breaking the law, the car isn't stolen and all they need to see is certain numbers etc.. Unless there is some way to find Nissan's records of what engine number was fitted to which chassis ID?
  10. In reverse chronological order (photos of the day). I took a couple more, but got tired of blurring number plates out
  11. Glad you like it Lurcho's. I wonder what you would think if I wore the rest of the outfit though?
  12. Reproduction clear lenses for 240z. http://cgi.ebay.com.au/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=251557112115 Cheap at $120 AU
  13. Hey mate, join the club lol.. Actually what is the fibreglass bonnet like? I'm thinking of using 1 on my S30Z - going for the 432-R look. I might also be interested in the steel scoop bonnet that sounds like it's been modified. PM me if you like?
  14. Yeah I got some photos should I blur number plates?
  15. Bumping this up for a reminder to come along.
  16. So Clark rubber had the same style / pattern of vinyl?
  17. haha, hopefully there is some substance in amongst the 'stuff'. I think I'll have the longest build thread on here with every micro-update but I am kind of hoping it helps those with less knowledge on how to go about these things. Yeah I originally wanted to preserve the patina of the Safari Gold and have a bit of a rat rod theme, but I've sort of given up on that idea now. Besides it's Safari Poo Brown anyway at the moment. I go through Jesse Streeter, you have to factor in the cost of domestic postage in Japan to Jesse + postage to you in AU. So the badges I got for a good price originally ended up getting up there by the time all the other expenses come into it, postage + Jesse's fee's. I've found Yahoo! Auctions is good for rare pieces that are otherwise not listed in eBay AU or US but the prices do tend to go higher, for example AU tail lights with the amber turn signals fetch really good money and I've seen people sell them in AU for give away prices really. So it's good for some things and less good for others. I guess what I'm saying is buy local for common items, but look at Yahoo! auctions if you want fender mirrors or a Fairlady Grille or Rally Clock etc..but be prepared to put in a high bid because you can't auction snipe in Yahoo! Auctions like you can on eBay. Last minute bids cause the auction end time to be extended. Yeah I have a MIG welder I bought off Mossy, but haven't used it yet. I do intend to use it also, but I like mastering the Oxy also. I would also like to learn TIG for alloy welding and fabrication so I'll give them all a go at some point. I agree the Tafe teachers are old school but I like that about learning from them also. Yeah you can get that vacuum plastic chrome done also, but I'll give that spray on stuff a shot I reakon see how it works. Lots of parts on the S30Z were in that kind of chrome style so it's worth experimenting with.
  18. Thanks guys yeah I'm thinking of giving it a go. I'm not at that stage yet, but will get there. How about a sunroof repair and smoothing out to give that concave shape to it? I was told you could use a form of glue or adhesive (I know modern cars are literally glued together these days) to prevent warpage of the roof panel etc.. but I like the idea of a bit of old school approach to the repair - if that makes any sense what-so-ever?
  19. Not the most exciting updates but updates all the same. The passenger fender had cracks along the lip from rust. So welding this up was a pain, I managed to get some of the way there with it, but the metal around the area was really thin due to the rust and so it kept blowing holes. So a bit of help from 1 of the gentlemen at the tafe course and all good now... There is also a dent as you can see here: It's been mostly straightened out, but it will require heat shrinking as the metal has stretched and is a bit floppy now. I haven't used a heat shrinker yet so I'll be sure to describe how it works when I do. Should make it nice and toight like a toiger. The edge of the panel also got pushed in because the door would open and catch on the leading edge. Here is a before photo to show you the difference. It still needs further 'dressing up' as they say... Since the teacher is often busy with other things and student I brought in the sugar scoops to clean up any holes that were drilled into them to fit those horrid plastic covers (OEM Chrome lip ones are great- but I'm not a fan of the plastic fantastic with rubber trips). Probably the easiest bit of welding I've done so far. While it was still hot I gave it a good smack with the planishing hammer and bob's your teapot the weld blob is flattended. You're left with a pimple that can be sanded flat. Before I did that though I practiced on the passenger side sugar scoop first. Looking at that sugar scoop on the car you'd have never known it was hiding all that bog. But once removed and I looked on the underside I could see something wasn't quite right, so I expected when I stripped the paint back to find something like the above. What is weird is the area the damage is, I still can't quite figure out how that happened? I think it was a really bad rust repair attempt? Anyway I should have another good condition scoop on the way soon to replace it, I'll use this for future practice or if anyone wants it let me know? Here is another bit of dressing up, the lower valance panels are actually quite good. But again the edges had stress cracks from rust. Since these panels are quite expensive to source in good condition they are worth fixing. The lip on this corner is actually folded flat, but I had to unfold it to patch it up and I'll clean up the area and rust proof it then fold it back down again. The other side is in better shape and only has minor surface rust. A photo of the 4 speed knob - which will get the 5 speed button shortly. You can see the gear lever is bent backward to accommodate the earlier cars transmission tunnel (71A gearbox) hole being further back than later cars where it moved forward. Some new presents arrived the day after my birthday - unfortunately they were things I bought for myself LOL... I found 3 DATSUN badges on Yahoo! Auctions at a good price. I can confirm that the badge holes line up between 260z / 240z guards. Although I seem to have 1 additional hole that will need to be plugged. and finally this arrived also. Rare to find 1 that isn't cut for a head unit. From the seller description it came out of a 72 HS30-H (Meaning ZG) which makes it a little bit special to me . The chrome is a bit shot, but the rest is in really tidy condition and I am hoping that chrome paint stuff works, cause I have a whole lot of Z parts that could use it. And that folks is all for now.
  20. Apparently it's a 71C box. But it's not for sale
  21. Hi Guys, So I wanted to get your opinions on this, lead filling used to be the old school method of panel repair, but with plastic fillers it became a bit of a dying art. I'm not sure if it was too time consuming or health reasons (the lead being toxic?) or perhaps it was all about time invested for panel shops? But I saw a video on Youtube a while ago where they now have 'lead free' versions of this kind of filler. Here is an example: So I'm hoping to hear from the likes of Ledge / Lurch etc.. what their opinion is on it and what are the pro's and con's of using this stuff vs bondo / bog?
  22. Oh my word, look at those tail lights. From a Ford Falcon? I can't get over the fact that it has all those mods yet it still has the gear knob and throttle / choke knobs in it. 260z door card, so maybe a 260z door? Must be an early girl too! Wonder what number... At least it doesn't have a sunroof. Feel like there was another 240z for sale in TAS recently, but it's gone now?
  23. I'm trying to flog something for free here you lot! If you don't be quiet I'll stick it on eBay with a buy it now of $150 with the subject title (uber rare)...
  24. Brand new SU carbs. http://www.buyee.jp/item/yahoo/auction/180095562
  25. As the title states, free 4 speed gear knob to suit a Datsun gear level thread size. I almost hated it so much, I came full circle and started to like it again. Could work with other vintage Datsun's or an old Ford / Holden. Can bring to meet this Sunday in Sydney?
