Thoughts On Left Hand Vs. Right Hand Drive Z
gav240z replied to Webby's topic in General Discussions
Yep exactly the same guy and same car, put the hard sell on me saying if you don't act now some bloke in Sweden is gonna buy it you'll be sorry etc.. I saw the Blue 240z advertised later on and realised he was just flipping cars. I tend to go with gut instinct these days, so I'm glad your story backs up my hunch. I guess when you've dealt with shonky folks for long enough you know the signs. I learnt my lessons the expensive way unfortunately, but at least I learnt them young! I could definitely see a hard front end whack and poor repair job on it. Lots of bog too, judging by the paint depth meter readings in those photos. The cost of inspection was $300 USD, but it probably saved me much more. Nothing ventured nothing gained. You can definitely still find good deals in North America for 240z's, just gotta be vigilant and it helps to have a contact over there. Which I do now. I know a guy who comes across many 'projects' and I've often thought of importing them but the interest in LHD here has turned me off doing it. I will be in the US again late October so I'll be able to look at a couple in person. (always much better that way). -
I think it's a great buy, looks very original. You can tell the panels are OEM as all the gaps are pretty much spot on. The bonnet is an easy fix, even with the slight front end nudge it looks to have had on the corner. A strip down and repaint and that thing will triple in value easily. Good to see it still has the original undertray also (most are missing now). Just be thankful it doesn't have a sunroof.

If you're interested have a read through this topic. http://www.viczcar.com/forum/topic/9963-tafe-course-sydney-st-george/?p=166128 But the best thing to do is call the Tafe and ask for the automotive and bodywork department. http://sydneytafe.edu.au/course-details/AUR32116-01V01/certificate-iii-in-automotive-body-repair-technology#results Speak to them on the phone about an opening in the night class next semester. A lot of the same faces are there each semester working on their projects.

Well this has come up better than expected.. There is still a lot of detail work to be done, but I've somewhat surprised myself as to how much improvement has been made. Spent a lot of time with hammer / dolly and dolly and slapper re-profiling the bonnet. There is a couple of splits along the leading edge that I'm going to use the Oxy welder to patch up and should give it an even more 'true' look. Using a slapper helps 'shrink' the metal so it's not really oil canning or anything at the moment but if there is areas that need to be tightened then a quick heat shrink might do the trick. At some point I'll test fit it onto the car to see how it looks and get a better sense of how it will sit. Not in these photos but the template I was using to determine how much work would be needed (based on the left side) now sits very close on the right side.

1 of the wires on my 1 appear to be cut (not sure why?) It's a very thin wire too, so soldering might be hard. I haven't really invested much time into working it all out yet. Other than reading this thread a while back. http://www.viczcar.com/forum/topic/6506-240z-hazard-switch/page-2 My 72 240z is in Melbourne so I don't have immediate access to it, to see what connections exist under the dashboard already. I bought a 240z flasher can on eBay US a while back but it's in the US with a stash of other 240z parts I plan to bring back with me soon. Therefore I can only assume the connection set up is similar, but can't confirm. I believe 73 North American delivered 240z's had the Green lit cigarette lighter, hazard switch and heater facia panels. Not sure why we didn't get them here? Perhaps cost cutting?

If you have been following for a while you've probably got some idea of what rust looks like and where it's common on these cars. The value in these cars is often in the body so check all the common spots for rust. The mechanical stuff isn't too difficult. However with the 2+2s some trim items are hard to find and expensive now like door cards and I don't know of anyone offering re-skin's for the rear seats of a 2+2 yet. So keep those things in mind. -
19 or 20 gauge (or 0.8mm) seems to be the consensus, but you could measure the thickness of what you cut out and ask for the same when you go to buy sheet metal. PS: That upper swage line on your 1/4 panel would be the perfect candidate to fix with lead wiping. By the way did you see this? http://www.viczcar.com/forum/topic/1924-cars-for-sale-3rd-party-sites-ebay-carsales-etc/?p=182273 Might be easier to unpick the 1/4 panels and use them on your car? The whole shell is $800.

Ross that is the late 71/72 model switch. The early 1 says "Flash, ahhhhh" Looks like this: http://www.viczcar.com/forum/topic/11264-safari-brown-i-mean-gold-the-nsw-project/?p=179503 I have a 73 model flash switch you pull out and lights up Green. I actually want the 72 version you posted for my 72 240z. Since that's just how I roll... Attached is photos of the 73 switch. I'd sell it if I could find the earlier 72 style 1.

Hi Barry, I've been meaning to respond to this thread for a couple of weeks. I hope you won't take this the wrong way or as criticism, but it looks to me like the DIY kit doesn't quite give you that nice sheen and chameleon colour finish you get from the professional outfits. For example: HS30 00019 rebuild thread: http://www.viczcar.com/forum/topic/11477-hs30-00019/?p=153978 I also came across this business in SA - which looks like it might be a small 1 man shop, but what I like about it is the fact that he does 1 job at a time and specialises in small items. Which is 1 of the reasons many of us may be shy of a plater. http://www.viczcar.com/forum/topic/15320-yellow-chromate-plating/ Here is an Oscillator box I had done (in the US) by a professional plater. Again it had that sheen / colour changing finish. So I guess my point is that I'm impressed with what can be done using the DIY kits, but I'm not sure the finish is quite at the level I'd like for my own restoration projects, but perhaps it's a case of perfecting the technique to get the same level of finish and experimenting further? I may end up taking the large items with my car to a large plater, and then bag and tag the smaller items for a specialist like the 1 mentioned above who is less likely to misplace those small items.

Got a soft spot for Early Honda's. Trying to convince a friend to buy an S600 project we can work on together instead of the Third Gen Prelude (which is also a great car!).

You don't need to justify buying an early car to me. . I agree I like the details in the early cars also.

I also figure if it's good enough for this Toyota 2000GT, (hammer + dolly and a little bit of lead filler) it's good enough for my S30Z bonnet. http://www.studiotimecapsule.com/restoration_of_twiggys_toyota_2000gt I'd say the 2000GT 1/4 panel repair was also due to scarcity of finding another. Kind of surprised they didn't fabricate an entire 1/4 panel by hand, but I guess everyone has to make a decision on the best repair method for themselves.

http://www.gumtree.com.au/s-ad/murray-bridge/cars-vans-utes/1975-datsun-260z-coupe/1122382335 Location: Murray Bridge, SA 1975 Datsun 260z 2+2 - Second owner since 1977. I'd say this would be a good buy for those looking to get a 2+2. Chances are it hasn't been messed about with and not hiding too much under the paint work. Of course no guarantee's but generally speaking when someone has owned a car this long they have taken care of it and don't do cheap bog and flog jobs. I kind of like the pinstriping down the side, the interior re-trim not so much. -

Probably doesn't get fumes coming in to the cabin though! -
How bad are the doors? Is it mostly the door skins or the frame that has taken the punishment?
