luvemfast Posted January 4, 2009 Posted January 4, 2009 Picked up a 240Z with and RB30 a few days ago. The original plan was to tranfer the RB and gearbox accross to the 280 and sell the rolling shell. Its pretty much all there, minus door trims and carpet. It has had a bingle on the passenger side front. But the rust isn't too bad. Has a nice looking exhaust too, 2.5" mandrel bent with Lukey muffler. I'm having trouble getting it to fire up though, turns over fine. Narrowed it down to injectors not firing (no pulse with test light). ECU or wiring problem? Anyway, just thought I'd share..... Quote
Toecutter Posted January 4, 2009 Posted January 4, 2009 How much will you be asking for the rolling shell? Sulio Quote
dazzed Posted January 5, 2009 Posted January 5, 2009 i have a ecu i use for testing if you would like to borrow it , i assume the car is manual, broken tracks in the pcb is becoming common with the age, injection timing is also processed through the distributor as well and most failures are from dirty connections in the wiring harness connector at the distributor, cheers dazzed, let me know if you need the ecu. Bruce Posted January 5, 2009 Posted January 5, 2009 sounds like a great pick up where abouts did you find it? Quote
luvemfast Posted January 5, 2009 Author Posted January 5, 2009 i have a ecu i use for testing if you would like to borrow it Cheers Daniel, may have to take you up on the offer. where abouts did you find it? Long story. Through a guy who was at an NDSOC meeting. Stay with me...... He was looking at my 280 2 seater and he said that he owned one just like that. There aren't too many around, I asked him if it had a red interior. He said yes. It was for sale a few years ago, I bought another 240 off him back then. When I picked it up back then, we had to go to his friends house to get some parts for it. There was this red 240 with RB30 conversion sitting under a tarp. I remembered it for years, but the guy changed his phone number and I couldn't remember where it was. SO, I asked this guy at the meeting if he knew of this car? He did. Was is still there? Yes. I asked if he could get me the phone number. The rest is history. Phew, got it? Thanks for the comment Pauly. Note the Z clock (raffle prize) next to the Hawks premiership Weg poster(just wanted to point out who the champs are)? PM me if your interested Sulio Quote
Bruce Posted January 5, 2009 Posted January 5, 2009 I have a buyer for the shell if not taken by Sulio. Let me know cheers Bruce Quote
Moderators Zedman240® Posted January 6, 2009 Moderators Posted January 6, 2009 Well done with the purchase Simon! With the RB30, did you check for a spark too? The common problem I've seen with those is the ignition module that's in the distributor which also does has the crank angle sensor inside it. If that fails, ECU doesn't know the engine is rotating so won't fire the injectors or switch the coil. When you strip the distributor, make sure you don't damage that screw that's inside that metal tube; it's a f@#@# to remove when stripped! You can replace the module without removing the dizzy from the engine. luvemfast Posted January 6, 2009 Author Posted January 6, 2009 Thanks Dimitri, I have spark. So I would assume that the module is ok Failing that, Daniel offered for a loaner ECU. I will call within the week. Quote

luvemfast Posted January 9, 2009 Author Posted January 9, 2009 Some pics. Aerostart has turned her over, dizzy is next on my hit list of getting her going. The plan was to transplant the RB into the 280 and sell the rolling shell, but I'm now starting to let my imagination run wild. Maybe I'll keep this and sell the S130.... What to do, what to do? Does anyone else lay awake in bed at night thinking about ther Zed? (not zzzzz's) Quote
Moderators Zedman240® Posted January 9, 2009 Moderators Posted January 9, 2009 Hey Simon, has it been registered / engineered with that RB30? How good is the shell? If its a great body I'd keep the 240 if you got it for a great price.. That roll cage don't look too safe; looks home made with some faults! Quote
24OZ Posted January 9, 2009 Posted January 9, 2009 i agree,p1ss the roll bar off,it is safer to have no roll bar than a poorly designed/built one if you went with the 280 option it probably wouldn't need a rollbar as they are far more rigid.....however i would still go with the S130,especially as the motor is already in it Quote

Brakes and suspension are stock, so it wouldn't pass engineering atm. Yeah, the roll cage is just sitting there. It would need some work to acually do something. The body is ok, would't be entered in any show and shines without lots of work (but it is the first S30 that I've owned that has steel in the doglegs). Which works for me as I just wanna drive fast, I must be John Bellfields long lost grandson Would love to take it out on the track, just for fun. It would need some work done first, so I may actually sell it as is. After talking with Daniel (Dazzed), I may spend the money building an L28 up instead. I think I'm in love with my 280Z anyway, so I'll keep it for a while and enjoy playing with her. Quote
C.A.R. Posted January 9, 2009 Posted January 9, 2009 The 280ZX is something different Simon - keep it. Sell the shell/roller to someone who'll resurrect it. Quote
luvemfast Posted January 9, 2009 Author Posted January 9, 2009 OK who wants to buy a 240Z with an RB30? Quote
Zeddophile Posted January 9, 2009 Posted January 9, 2009 OK who wants to buy a 240Z with an RB30? For how much? Quote
luvemfast Posted January 11, 2009 Author Posted January 11, 2009 I'm going to play with it for a while (time permitting). Would like to get it going, learn a few things. I'll list it in classifieds when I’m ready. Quote
