bullzed Posted December 6, 2012 Posted December 6, 2012 Is it just a flood of people wanting more for Z's lately or is it an actual increase in market value? There are multiple 280ZX's on carsales for $5k+ which seems to me to be ridiculous. I know carsales prices are usually inflated compared to real world prices however I've never seen ZX's that expensive in my 4 years of owning one. Quote
d3c0y Posted December 6, 2012 Posted December 6, 2012 If everyone puts their price up and there are no cheap ones, doesn't that mean that's what their worth? Quote
D.O.G Posted December 6, 2012 Posted December 6, 2012 Asking / advertised price and actual selling price are often very different. Many of these cars end up on ebay and only attract bids of half (or less) of the original price. It hasn't been a good economic environment for selling vehicles for some time now. Quote

The rarer they get, the more they are worth, realistically the number of straight Zs are dwindling, even 280zx's Shannons quoted mine as insurable at $20k, and as rust cancer and death by carcrash takes out more they will only appreciate...look after your Z and it may be a valuable addition down the track. dat2kman Posted December 6, 2012 Posted December 6, 2012 The ZX's had reached the bottom dip on their pricing a couple years back, now they will start to slowly climb, as per reasoning as above. Older 240's, look at the pricing for them! Even more so, pricing for good Datsun Sports 2000's, the true original spirts car by Datsun, are very strong. Cars like Z31 Z32 are at bottom pricing about now, ie no-one wants to touch them due to mechanical/electrical issues, but in a few years they will have bottom dipped, and climb. One thing, it is very pleasing to see the enthusiasm for these older cars, being shown by the younger owners! Quote
luvemfast Posted December 7, 2012 Posted December 7, 2012 I've really noticed a change in the way people view the 280ZX's over the last few years and pretty confident that will increase. Quote
saxon Posted December 7, 2012 Posted December 7, 2012 I've only been watching the market for the past 2 years but I feel it is both, old Z's are getting more popular and it is putting up their value. There is a whole new wave of demand coming through from younger guys, and naturally the supply is decreasing. Also to note, it is very rare to see a good modified z with flares, triples on L28, etc, only a couple of instances come to mind in the past 2 years, so it's pretty hard to gauge what they are worth. Fairlady Z Posted December 7, 2012 Posted December 7, 2012 geez I've been looking after the pricing for some time now. since 04 when i got my 260z. Has been a slow transition must add. Bargains can be found but are getting very rare. People are noticing older cooler cars. so demand is growing. Like said above lot of younger guys are getting into it in particular the JDM styled cars with fat rims and flares and fender mirrors. Z are on top of their shopping list. 240Z are climbing and still think they too cheap compared to some other models. same as 260z. 280zx are finally going up took a while but good ones are not easy to find. Ive been looking for one for some time and nothing. so my price has to go up if i want one like it or not. or wait and never get one. Like Dat2kman said Z31 and Z32 are hitting low so as S13 Silvia's and R32 GTR. Gtr is slightly on the increase atm and R33 seem to come down more. I was crazy into new models at my younger days. S14,15,WRX Evo ETC..... but after having my 260Z i just cannot get myself to buy a newer car. New cars 1.Deprecation 2.Insurance 3.Everyone has one. Old cars 1. no depreciation if anything it increases. 2. Insurance cheaper 3. not many around so its cool to have it. 4. Easy to learn and maintain yourself. if you don't mind getting your hands dirty. few other ppl are noticing this and jumping on board. keep an eye on other non Nissan models. some a cheap now and typical owners of these models don't mind spending big for right car. though did notice 1600 have dropped quite a bit and good ones can be bought at reasonable prices. To me 1600 does not compare to a Z. Z is in different league. Quote

Scoota G Posted December 7, 2012 Posted December 7, 2012 I got all excited as i misread the title as Z Pieces, one track mind after searching ebay for 4 years Quote
Sandgroper Posted December 7, 2012 Posted December 7, 2012 Like anything, condition is key, even for 280zx, Z31 & Z32's, there will be those out there for which a 280zx is their favourite car (not many in comparison, but some) I have seen mint 280zx's (although few and far between) attract good prices (for a 280zx ) I also have a 300zx, but a 25th Anniversary Edition, this is a low K excellent condition, 100% original car, I have seen these advertised for high teens to early twenties, and seem to sell for close what is being asked for, condition, rarity & originality are key to good prices, regardless of what it is. (yes, even 280zx's, even ugly babies are loved by the mothers!) Lee Quote
dat2kman Posted December 7, 2012 Posted December 7, 2012 Zac, thats right, you might need a front bumper! Remember that JDM front bumper i got by side of my shed! She's still there!!! Quote
bullzed Posted December 8, 2012 Author Posted December 8, 2012 Zac, thats right, you might need a front bumper! Remember that JDM front bumper i got by side of my shed! She's still there!!! Your shed is a god damn gold mine! I fear next time I enter it I'll emerge broke, but with many many goodies. You have a JDM front bumper? I HAVE to see that next time I'm there. Your not looking to get a parts car are you Zac ? Finding it hard to get parts to fix the front bumper? If that is the case I may have an answer for you . But that is only a may be able to help.I know someone who has a couple of 280ZX's sitting around. PM me I have fixed the front bumper but was just amazed to see so many high priced 280ZX's around. I remember a few years back when I was on the verge of selling my ZX, I couldn't even get interest in it for $4.5k, that was with no rust, L27 with triples, Neale Raker wheels and a complete two tone interior. Administrators gav240z Posted December 8, 2012 Administrators Posted December 8, 2012 I have been into these cars since I was 16 / 17 now 30 and zeds were always rare and hard to find even back then. I've always felt prices were too cheap for what you get out of these cars. I really noticed how special my 240z was when I was back in Australia in February and the sheer amount of attention the car received when out and about. It really did feel special to be in a Z again. Keeping in mind I've been driving a clean FD3s rx7 around. It just does not draw the same kind of appreciation even people who don't know about cars will appreciate the timeless style of the 240z. If anything the internet has made buying a special car like a classic Z easier since it opens the market to outside local areas but even so in the last 5 or 10 years I've not seen many good examples hit the market. Plenty of cars that need restoration yes but otherwise no. Japanese classics are going up in value as the world realises what a bargain can still be had. Cars that compare to a 240z in my opinion are. 1. Cobra coupe $80000 2. Etype $30000 minimum for 2+2 3. Fastback Mustang $30000 Just to name a few. Anywhere outside the US zeds are rare but even there good examples are going up. Quote
Grandad Posted December 11, 2012 Posted December 11, 2012 Hi all I think Zed cars are still ridiculously undervalued and great value for money which is partly why I put my son Whittie into one as his first car which he and I are now restoring, http://www.viczcar.com/forum/index.php/topic,6991.0.html a little bit of wool pulling in mother's direction was required at acquisition time because it was race prepared and not an ideal daily driver When I look at the prices being achieved for Aussie Muscle Cars I can't help thinking that they are ridiculously over valued existing in an extremely narrow parochial market whereas the Zed cars are being valued globally. I took a look at RedBook recently which shows that when the 240Z and 260Z cars were being sold new in this country they were dearer than the big three local sports/coupe cars. Here's the RedBook price comparison in descending order:- 1971 240Z $4,666.00 1978 260Z $12,500.00 1971 Falcon XY 351GT HO $4,625.00 1978 Cobra Coupe Special $10,100.00 1971 Holden Monaro 350GTS $4,281.00 1978 Monaro 350GTS 4 Door $9,306.00 1971 Valiant Charger R/T 265 $3,745.00 1978 Valiant Charger 770CL $8,038.00 The pricing of Zed cars at the time was in no small part a product of Australia's protectionist policies but you don't have to be an engineer to recognize that overhead cam is better than push rods, 5 speed transmission is better than three or four and 4 wheel independent McPherson strut suspension beats wish bones, torsion bars and live rear axle leaf springs every day. Japan seams to have been playing catchup forever with the value of it's old cars but I'm thinking that may be coming to an end with $500,000.00 being the going rate for a Toyota 2000 GT, I accept that's a rare care but it's not all that far removed from our Zeds and our numbers are decreasing.
