luvemfast Posted August 12, 2013 Posted August 12, 2013 Looks like someone's put a lot of effort into those carbs. Can't wait to see how it goes with them. They've been dyno'd to 260hp. So should be a good match for your stock engine. Quote
zzzzed Posted August 12, 2013 Author Posted August 12, 2013 Lols at Simon. Yes I have choked them down to 30mm chokes. I will see how they go for jetting and if I need to change them I will Quote
zzzzed Posted August 12, 2013 Author Posted August 12, 2013 Because I could not find a set of 32mm chokes. Quote
zzzzed Posted August 12, 2013 Author Posted August 12, 2013 I will put the 34's back in when I have built a mild l28 for it Quote
zzzzed Posted August 25, 2013 Author Posted August 25, 2013 Ok triples are on and running. They are still needing a tune so I might need to pay Peter hall. Visit. But first I need to replace the linkage rod ends because they are getting old and brittle and one of them broke. Other than that it starts easy. And runs ok. The idle is a little high but that will get sorted with a Tune. Check out the vid Quote
NZeder Posted August 25, 2013 Posted August 25, 2013 Feeling a bit sea sick after watching that video - swing back and forth...back and forth.... :-\ Very short intake manifold and very short trumpets - get some longer trumpets given you have the room - it should improve the torque some more. And you are right - you need to sort the linkages out. I bet you are pleased to have triples on and it running after the poor start with the bolt and thermostat housing. Quote
zzzzed Posted August 26, 2013 Author Posted August 26, 2013 Yeh. Sorry about that. I must have been excited by noise Quote
Roberto Posted August 26, 2013 Posted August 26, 2013 They sound great Mick. Interested to see how they run on the road. Peter Hall should be able to get them purring! Quote
d3c0y Posted August 26, 2013 Posted August 26, 2013 You could probably be able to squeeze some longer air horns on those carbs too. That is one short manifold! Quote
zzzzed Posted August 26, 2013 Author Posted August 26, 2013 It's a factory mikuni manifold. I will be getting longer trumpets when I a bit more financial. Quote
zzzzed Posted October 9, 2013 Author Posted October 9, 2013 I threw some rego on the old girl today so it gavel a chance to get out and try out the mikuni's The verdict is. They are the opposite of the flat top hitachi. Where the flat tops had reasonable torque down low they fell in a big hole after around 4500 rpm. The mikuni's are complete opposite of that. I did not think it was possible for this old l26 to rev that high. And it did it very smoth. Down low in the revs it is a little disappointing though. I am hoping I can pick up a little down low with some longer trumpets. I might even try a different manifold later. It hasn't been tuned yet and needs new plugs points and leads too so I think there is a lot of room for improvement. I have tiny little 30mm chokes at the moment but I also have a set of 34mm chokes. One set is to small and the other set is to big. (Stock as a rock l26) What would be better? To big or to small? And how would the larger chokes act compared to the smaller ones? Quote
Administrators gav240z Posted October 9, 2013 Administrators Posted October 9, 2013 So Triples really transform the motor it sounds like? I've never driven a Z on Triples believe it or not? I can't wait to install my 44 Mikuni's but it really needs to be properly set up. Quote
zzzzed Posted October 9, 2013 Author Posted October 9, 2013 Yeh mate they sure do. And there's so much room for improvement. I wouldn't say it hasn't much more power if anymore stock. But the rev range is has expanded out of sight from the stock hitachi's. I will be getting a proper tune ASAP. Quote
Roberto Posted October 9, 2013 Posted October 9, 2013 Mick, Im sure that once you get the tune right and the timing set right it will have more torque down low. Quote
luvemfast Posted October 9, 2013 Posted October 9, 2013 ^^^^ What he said! Once you've gone triples, you can't go back Quote
zzzzed Posted October 9, 2013 Author Posted October 9, 2013 Yeh I won't be going back. As I said there's heaps of room for improvement. Quote
Moderators Zedman240® Posted October 9, 2013 Moderators Posted October 9, 2013 Am I right in thinking smaller chokes will make it easier to putt around town? Higher velocity air running through so that would make it more "drivable" at normal road speeds? Oh Gavin, we need to rectify that situation.. Have a drive of my zed next time your'e in Melbourne... Yes please! Should be home around Christmas - looking forward to Christmas BBQ. Quote
zzzzed Posted October 14, 2013 Author Posted October 14, 2013 I think after driving it a bit it is starting to feel a bit quicker. I am not sure if it is because the carbs are cleaning them self out, or it is just because I was expecting to much after driving a rb20det powered zed around for the last 3 months. . The main jet and air jet are still to small so Simon is sending me the correct sized jets. So hopefully once they are in it will be better again. Mick Quote
d3c0y Posted October 14, 2013 Posted October 14, 2013 As Dimitri says, smaller chokes are for low end power, big chokes for top end. I think the L26 will be fine with 34mm chokes they aren't that big, but it's not a big deal to change them so why not try both sets and see which ones you like. A stock L26 with triples isn't ever going to be a patch on an RB20DET though. It's probably got 100 more HP. As you said the longer velocity stacks will help it out too. The next thing is to throw a cam in it, that will really wake it up with the triples on there. Quote
luvemfast Posted October 14, 2013 Posted October 14, 2013 The next thing is to throw a cam in it, that will really wake it up with the triples on there. That's what I also said to Mick. Nothing crazy as it's a stock L26. Just a 240Z grind would waken it up a little. The main jet and air jet are still to small so Simon is sending me the correct sized jets. So hopefully once they are in it will be better again. 180 airs and 140 mains will be on their way tomorrow Mick (Oh........ And a spare cover gasket) Have you got the idle, sync and timing sorted yet? Quote
zzzzed Posted October 14, 2013 Author Posted October 14, 2013 Yeh I got the idle down a bit but I can't keep it steady enough to get the balance 100% Because of rich idle. I am hoping the jets will fix this. I may still try the 34 mm chokes to see how they perform a cam is on the list. But I will wait till I pull the engine to re paint the engine bay. Quote
luvemfast Posted October 14, 2013 Posted October 14, 2013 Pilot jet controls idle, along with idle screws. You have 57.5, which should be good with 1 1/2 turns of idle screw. Chokes will also change it slightly. Check taper on idle screws. I know for a fact they were in good condition. Just check the tip/ends are still good and haven't been over tighened, which can damage them. Quote
zzzzed Posted October 14, 2013 Author Posted October 14, 2013 I'll check it out tomorrow. I can't see that they would be damaged. Pete was the last person to play with them. Quote
