Hi gents.

I've been toying with the idea of trading in my daily EL XR6 on LPG.

For this

http://www.ozdat.com/forum/viewtopic.php?f=53&t=27921

I haven't gone to look at it yet, as it's a 2 hour drive way. But driven a friends standard 1000. Oddly enough, my 6'5 body fits in. May want to shift seat back a bit, but not too bad.

Would save quite a bit on fuel, allowing the wife to get an upgrade for the family car. I just don't need a big car for commuting, it's such a waste.

Bottom line is. It's cool........ And different. But how impractible is it going to be for all year round driving @75kms a day, round trip?

My biggest concerns are-

Lack of mod cons. ie -air con, 2 speed wiper

Tiring to drive?

Rust

Mechanical failure. Can't just head down to Repco or Autobarns.

Lack of towing ability.

What are people's thoughts?

I keep digging up info about his car tryin to find a big reason to walk away. But nothing's scared me off yet.

Please give me a reason to end these thoughts of madness.

But I think I'm in love!

I would be all over that thing if I had the room for another car. I had one years a go. It was a hoot to drive on standard form.

Lots to like about this Simon......but....

Go and drive it, good cars that are well sorted and put together will drive well and you will either love it or walk a away.

As a daily, I would be cautious. Its got a lot of mods (albeit nothing too serious) so more to go wrong. If you can live with the impracticality it will make the mundane drive to and from work a treat and worth every cent!

Although I have been tempted to similar things in the past, I think having a classic car as a daily driver (that's DAILY....meaning every day, rain, snow, sleet, and it has to WORK every day, hop in and go driving) is a terrible idea.  Old cars are prone to problems irrespective of how well they’ve been maintained…Older cars will have a lot of wear and tear from age which means that the increased maintenance of an old classic will cost significantly more money than a modern daily driver to keep on the road especially if you're not the one doing the work.  Now I’m not sure on your level of mechanical “know how” but generally speaking, older cars are a labour of love and require regular TLC: rebuild carb (even though this isn’t carby anymore), change plugs, adjust points, grease balljoints and tie rods, replace drum shoes and springs and flush radiators. I'm a car guy with some technical experience under my belt, and even I wouldn’t want to drive a classic car daily as sole means for transportation although I do love the idea. Don't let nostalgia get in the way of reality. The only real pro as a daily,is that it's a very pretty, fun and unique car. If you're considering this for a "toy car" then I say go for it.. going off on a slight tangent, I posted a topic about mating old bodies with new cars (something that might interest you..)

I don't know mate I mean it looks awesome and is definitely unique but will it get parked under cover or will it be in the elements? It would bother me to have a classic in the hard sun and rain.

Also driving a car like this as a daily gets old real quick much better as a weekend toy you know modern cars have come far in terms of comfort and drivability.

No air con in summer sucks I'm going to fit vintage air to my Z in future I think.

If you think all that stuff won't bother you go for it. I do think it will need some money and love though anything that old will.

I had a worked 61 mini for a daily drive for 2.5 years loved the car but the novelty wears off after a while and you want comfort.  My dad still has it now and does hill climbs and sprints with it and i take it for a spin every now and then then i jump into my 2008 model car and its a great feeling. Quieter, smoother, demisters that work, headlights that i can see with i wouldn't go back and i only drove 10 mins to work. But i still love the car

Providing its in A1 mechanical condition I say go for it, body looks great. For me modern car are boring and are mind numbing to drive, the only upside would be air conditioning. I have run a VS ute on gas as a daily previously and it was constantly in need of work.

My brother has a 1600 he has used as a daily for 15yrs, we just did the first engine rebuild this weekend. Amazing what a little TLC and upkeep can do with these old Datto's.

Parts for these are not hard to find and are rather cheep. If you keep it maintained and keep up with the rust treatment there would be no problem. Only down side would be no airconditioning

Only issue I'd have with a daily like that would be the fear of someone smacking into it. If you are ok with that, go for it.... I would!

Dude is working this weekend.

So will postpone going down for another week.

Drive the wife's Commodore to work yesterday, as this would be my other option once we upgrade her car. Even though it drives nice.  I'd get sick of that pretty quick.

All the info is in the link above.

But, if you were a Facebook friend of mine. You'd already be aware of the spanner in the works.

The first 240Z that I can ever really remember, belonging to my primary school teacher back in 1983.

I'll leave it at that.

Oh and 1 owner. I've said too much..........
