scoota.. what paint did you use on the body? the matt black looks good man.

The paint is cheap spray pack satin black which i used because it will be easy to strip when Vivek gets into it for the next stage! Thanks for the kind words of encouragement guys.

ha, great looking garage now Scoot! The airdam really sets it off. As good as the body looks, those RX seats do draw the eye into the interior. Nice work.

Can anyone tell me, whats the process for painting a car properly after its had a quick

paint job like this? Lets say I run with a cheap satin paint job that i do myself for roughly

3 years. Am i able to then get it sprayed without it needing to be stripped in any way?

(ie. no media blasting, no removal of glass, engine or interior). Will a proper paint job done

this way never look quite right, because you cant get into those areas that you normally

would be able to when the car is fully stripped?

It depends on your ultimate goal. Nothing like detail work but most guys here are not building models or show cars. We use them.

 

Do all your prep on the shell properly that way you can prepare the other panels one at a time and spread it over a period of time. This way you can replace panels with cleaner panels if you choose to and you're less likely to lose interest in the vehicle.

hmmm ok, basically all i want to know is whats involved in turning a car with a perfect chassis

(yet to be completed ) that has a crappy paint job, into a a car with a very good paint job

(from a spray painter). Will the car need to be sanded right back? or will a light orbital sand do

the job with no primer necessary? Also, is it a great issue that windows and rubber trim will be

in the car when its properly sprayed? (is it possible for a paint job to look good when you cant

overlap the paint under the rubbers?)

Well like i said it depends on what sort of finish you are after, sure it can be done! I did it to my car back in 2007 to protect it until i could get around to finish. It took me 8 hours to sand by hand and prep including tape and 45 minutes to paint three coats. They call it a 10 foot paint job because it looks great from 10 feet away. It depends on the condition your paint is in now.

 

All i am saying is if you have the shell apart it would save you a bucket load of time and expense in the future to prepare the shell properly now.

Oh no! im going to prep my shell properly, im getting it garnet blasted and then

getting Lurch to do the welding (i plan to help as much as possible). I just thought

if i could then simply put crappy paint on, just to protect it and allow me to drive

around for a couple of years until i can afford a pretty decent paint job. (but i dont

want to have to pull it apart again...).

Do it once and do it properly, no point going to all that work blasting and rust repairs and prepping the body only to do a crappy paint job,  then when your ready for your proper paint job your going to have to pull it all down again, which I think is wasted time and money. Thats what I would do or should I say have done.

Okay, let me pass on my expert advice. After six weeks of stripping and repainting my car (and that's six whole weeks, not just evenings and weekends) I feel like an expert! After talking to various panelshops,  the only way you'll get a great finish is by going back to the metal. So your quick spray now will kinda solve the problem now but it won't be a quick job after to sand later before the proper spray. There'll be just too many unknowns if you leave any of the original paint on. After 40 years, the paint on my car was 2mm in places...

I took it back to bare metal all over (and amazingly found only two very small areas of rust on the doglegs). With new panels there, I can say my car is as rustfree as they come. But it taken six weeks to get back to the point where it looks great. There is no substitute for time and skill.

Spray it quickly now but don't expect a quick fix the other side. Good luck mate!
