Hey Guys,

My name is Dave and i am a z fan,

I am originally from nz but moved over to Brisbane about 5 years ago (like half of nz).

I have own a few 280's and still own one on my olds farm back home, you would be lucky to see it for all the grass growing on it.

Currently i am seeking a 240z to drive around till i get a house with a nice shed (every mans dream) and renovate her with a

VK45DE (TT) dropped in. its been a dream i have had for about 10 years but only now i have had the money to pursue this.

So anyone with a 240z with minimal rust in nice working order (Legal) that wants to sell or knows of someone selling PLEASE let me know.

Thanks

Dave

Hi Dave,

I like your introduction. Sounds like you stood up in front of a group of people who secretly like z cars and got your feelings off your chest, just like an AA meeting :-*

Would be an interesting build to see, Gl with it.

Welcome Dave.

At least you know what you want, 10 years of thought. Hopefully there's a few years of planning and research too!

Look forwards to seeing you achieve your dream.

Thanks, i sure do :) ill post something soon with what i have in mind, i basically want the look and style of the 1970's with 21st century safety, comfortability and power :)

It would be good to get every one's idea's on things like suspension and brake replacements wheel size's ect.

I have a pretty good idea of what i want from the engine:

-VK45DE bored out to a 5.6

-With VK56 crank and con rods

-forged pistons

-race cams (designed to work with the turbo's)

-Triple valve springs or 2 rock hard ones

-Ported head

-over sized injectors

-2x  Garrett GT30 Turbo’s

-Extractors

-2x 3.5” Strait pipes

-2x front mount Inter coolers

-2x big ass Pod Filters

-3core radiator

-6 Speed Gear Box (not sure from where)

-LSD Diff (not sure what yet)

-Custom ECU (my mate makes pretty red hot ones that can link to an android phone)

-Not to sure what i will do to the ignition timing ect

I have no idea how many HP it will pump out but probably to much :P

Will need to strengthen body i would think.

Im building a 3d model of it atm... bit hard off hand drawn blue's

What about handling? That's what these cars are renowned for rather than fully sick drag VL's.  ::)

Look up Arizona Z Car and buy all of it!

Then get Peter Mac to build the donk.

ECU that connects to an Android? Tell me more.........

I was actually thinking about doing something similar, well building an APP that would give you an interface to modify fuel control, boost etc.. Sounds cool.

Good point, I really what to keep that handling, well as much as I can with the ton of bricks I will dumping into it, I was thinking of using GTR or 350z susp & brakes but not to sure how the will fit.

I think I will need some cross bracing fixed to the sub frame to make it a little more rigid.

I really want it to be a track and street car (sunday driver), want it to handle just as good as standard an a bit better (if that's possible).

I don't know much about 240z susp mods, so it was my plan to get everyones idea's on what could be done, I'm not to worried about cost, if I can get a z for 10-15k ill be spending another 40-50k on it,

I would think with my current plans there will be at least 30k of that spend on the engine, i will be doing most of it myself....cause I just love messing with engine's and I haven't had the chance in years.

He is still developing the app, last I heard he was having little trouble getting all the points of connectivity linked up, but I think it will be awesome once all the bugs are sorted out.

Welcome Dave.

With regard to the vision you have outlined I am wondering why you specify a 240Z when a 260Z might do the job at least as well, if not possibly better.

Many prefer the 240Z because it was the first of the S30's available in Australia, they seem to sell for a little more, but are more the preference of those wanting to keep their cars fairly original.

The 260Z has some refinements that might be preferable for someone building a modified car and might be easier to locate and cheaper to buy than a 240Z.

Just curious. Whatever you decide will be an interesting project and we look forward to seeing your progress posted as you go.

Best Regards

Hi Dave,

I really hadn't even thought of a 260.... I guess when I first want a 240z I didn't really want to modify it much so I was more influenced by the value of the car... And like you said first off the belt.

What advantages would a 260z have over a 240 that I could take advantage of?

One of the things I know I am limited to with a 240z is the standard tire size, I Queensland I think you can only go 1.3 x the original size (width) and I was hoping to get a 265 on the back and 255 on the front.

I am not sure though if 260z have a larger original tire size than the 240z....

BTW I love the title of your post. I loved Z cars from the moment I saw them and doubt that there is a better value for money ride to be had anywhere from cars of that era - or even possibly from cars outside that era. There are not many cars where your bum tells you exactly just what the car is doing as well as the S30 does - and so little lost in the translation.

From what I have read, the S30 has a bucket load of room under the bonnet for the insertion of "foreign" engines and associated gear. HybridZ could be a good venue of enquiry in this area.

Please take anything I say with a grain of salt as I am no expert but I think, or have read elsewhere, that the 260Z has a modified floor plan that circumvents the problem of the angle of the tailshaft, has stronger rear strut towers, stronger tow hook attachments all round, a modified radiator support support panel, and a more "refined" interior.

I think that the early 260Z's are sometimes called the light bodied 260Z because they used the older and lighter 240Z shells in the introduction of the 260Z - I cannot find any official supporting evidence of this but my two seater is RS30 000812 and I have to order 240Z bits to suit if I want a proper fit.

I will post more details of the differences between a 240Z and 260Z, and the later 260Z (from Nissan technical bulletins) once I return home in a weeks time.

However, as far as looks and handling are concerned, other than the increased body weight of the 260Z, the external appearance and the seating position are very very similar. I doubt that the value of a modified 240Z is any higher than an identically modified 260Z.

This is just my personal opinion from a limited level of experience and knowledge and am happy to entertain alternative views on this point from the forum.

Do you know if the VH has similar mounting as the VK? i here about lots of people doing VH implants with no issues but no VK.

Think i may have found a 240 :D under 20k to

Apparantly there already is an app which communicates with your ECU wirelessy

It works through a specific bluetooth protocol that I hear is not all that common / very expensive to get ecu attachments for. Something that could circumvent the cost of expensive dongles would be a big selling app.

Posted

How does one typically communicate with an ECU? Serial comms (RS232)? To work with android I imagine you'd need a RS232 to Bluetooth converter (which would need to pick up power from somewhere). Then you'd need some sort of front-end GUI app for the phone. It'd take a bit of work, but it could be done.

Off course, bluetooth isn't very secure - I wouldn't want someone sitting next to me at the lights/etc screwing with my car. Now a computer with a small touch screen built into the car, that'd be cool (and probably easier).

Posted

I don't think an ECU would be using an RC232 port... Its not a switch or an electric billboard you know, its a full car ECU!!! :P

I believe like all proprietary hardware, every ECU will have its own proprietary port (At least that's how it is when it comes to enterprise server hardware (blades, etc.) )

Posted

AFAIK motec ECUs use RS232 and/or CAN. You'd be surprised how much RS232 (or RS422) is still used - engineers love it, because it's so easy. I'm not in the automotive industry, but every product we make still has RS232 and/or RS422 serial communications.

Hi everyone, sorry haven't been on for a while but about 5 weeks ago i had a heart attack... Was a bit of a shock considering I'm only 25 and fit and healthy, so I have had to put my dream of doing up a 240 on hold till I start work again.  :(

Hope all is good

hey Dave

Good to hear you are ok, the zed has been around for 40yrs , so no rush in doing it up

Look after yourself first and then work on the zed
