Pacey Posted April 13, 2011 Posted April 13, 2011 Hi all Just about to get a new exhaust system on my 260Z with a L28 EFI. No cataliyc convertor. Nothing to wild engine wise, mild cam, port/polished, larger throttle body. No extractors. Looking for a nice note with a bit of a growl if possible. Currently has 2" pipework, resonator (hot dog style) and a stainless steel muffler up at the rear,, sounds ok, but low down power is a little weak. Should I go 2" again or risk going 2.25" Will I gain or lose performance. And should I go for the resonator setup again as I believe the L series likes a bit of back pressure. I am finding a lot of differences of opinion in my searches. Any feedback appreciated. Quote
Scoota G Posted April 13, 2011 Posted April 13, 2011 I liked the 2 1/4 on a near stock engine till i heard dales 2.5 system but he runs extractors. Power gains were more than noticable. Quote
Pacey Posted April 13, 2011 Author Posted April 13, 2011 Thanks Scoota Do you mean the power was better on the 2 1/4 or Dales 2 1/2 Just wanna get it right.. Quote
Scoota G Posted April 13, 2011 Posted April 13, 2011 The 2.5 was much better. Dales car runs an L28 with extractors, twin hitachis, electronic ignition and an A grind cam from an L24. I run a 2 1/4 but i'll be going to 2.5. Peter Mac said a 3 inch wouldn't be out of the question on mine. Quote
Pacey Posted April 13, 2011 Author Posted April 13, 2011 Thanks yet again. I think you've got me swaying to the 2.5 What do you feel about the resonator ? Quote
Scoota G Posted April 13, 2011 Posted April 13, 2011 Dales doesn't run one and i think it sounds spot on. I'll get a video of the sound and you'll see what i mean. Here's one i took earlier. Quote
C.A.R. Posted April 13, 2011 Posted April 13, 2011 I have a mild L24 (EFi, mild cam, lightly ported head, headers, 9.1 CR) & I run a 2.5" system. The power & torque increase over the old 2" system that was on it was VERY noticeable...! Quote
RB30X Posted April 13, 2011 Posted April 13, 2011 Peter Mac said a 3 inch wouldn't be out of the question on mine. Peter might have been buttering you up a bit Scoota, 3" would be way too big unless you had a race built L28 that sat on 7000 all day. From my RB days the NA 3L got 2.5" exhaust and no bigger, unless you had a turbo in which case factory and slightly larger turbos got 3" and bigger turbos got 3.5-4". Resonators take the drone out of an exhaust system, but some seem to like drone, makes it sound louder which means of course it is faster Your exhaust can still be loud with one, it depends on the muffler. There is a young bloke down my street with an automatic magna and he has the worst sounding exhaust ever. No resonators just two big cannons out the back. I feel sick every time he drives past. Quote
Pacey Posted April 13, 2011 Author Posted April 13, 2011 Guys Thank you all for the input. Looks like I'll go with the 2.5". Might try first without the resonator and see how I go with the drone. Can always add one later. Great to see so many enthusiast's out there, at least I'm not the only madman living and breathing Z's. Does it ever end ?? Hope not.. Cheers Quote
Moderators Zedman240® Posted April 13, 2011 Moderators Posted April 13, 2011 Try and run with a resonator in the middle, or else you will get that barky sound. I always used those large cylindrical resonators that look like small cannon mufflers; no droning but just a deep growl with a straight through muffler on the back. 2.5" should be as big as you want to go. Quote
Pacey Posted April 13, 2011 Author Posted April 13, 2011 Thanks Zedman Yeah I currently have the resonator in the middle of the 2" setup and sounds smooth not barky. But the pipes are now getting way to old, time to upgrade to the 2.5". Cheers Quote

I had a play with this car on the weekend. It sounds hotter than ..... I don't know what, but it sounds REALLY hot. Quote

Pacey Posted April 14, 2011 Author Posted April 14, 2011 Thanks Simon Sounds great, Ill be there.. hopefully I'll have the new 2.5" by then.. BTW anyone had any experience with the Jaycar Digital fuel Adjuster, I'd like to discuss a few concerns.. Alan Quote
620Z Posted April 15, 2011 Posted April 15, 2011 Make sure you put in a resonator otherwise the car might be too loud when cruising. They make a big difference and you won't lose power. Go the 2.5. You know you will probably do something to the motor or extractors. Don't make the same mistake as most and get a 2" or 2.25" then do up your motor and then have to get a bigger exhaust again. This is partly where you waste money on your Zed doing things 2 and 3 times. Quote
Pacey Posted April 15, 2011 Author Posted April 15, 2011 Thanks Craig Yeah I sure will put on a resonator, dont need to go through the old RWC after the cops pull me up. 2.5' it is. BTW how do I get a photo up like you all have, cant seem to upload it anywhere, I have had a look at my profile ?? Quote
620Z Posted April 15, 2011 Posted April 15, 2011 The thing is the resonator doesn't really make the car much quieter on the out side. A bit. But it makes a massive different in eliminating the rumbling noice in side. So on that long cruise you don't end up partially deaf. I think you have to save a picture in your photo's and then attach it to your avatar. But it has to be a small file. I think that's the way but someone here can chime in and correct me if I'm wrong.
