Thanks Dimitri Yeah I understand your point, I wouldn't want to go tightening the circular spring on the AFM too much to restrict the air flow to the throttle body, maybe just enough to get in balance a bit more with the throttle postition. I suppose my concern is this.. If the AFM is 100% fully open and the throttle body only 80%, this means the ECU is getting the same voltage signal from the AFM for the remainder of the 20% throttle opening.. I would like to be able to control the signal all the way through the range..as I can do this with the Digital Fuel Adjuster.. Feedback would be much appreciated..
  4. Hey all Sorry I havn't been online for a while, just back from OS. I went for a drive upto Daylesford today and noticed that when my AFM flap is fully open, I still have a lot more to go with the accelerator pedal. The reason I know this is because I run a Jaycar Digital Fuel Adjuster on the AFM which tells me the voltage through the whole range of the AFM to which I have tested the range of the voltage on the potentiometer. Just want to know if the AFM and throttle lever position need to be in line with each other all the time Eg: when the AFM flap is open 50% should the throttle position also be the same and so on throughout the range. I could possibly tighten the AFM coil spring to try matching the throttle position, i know this will lean it out drastically, but then I could manipulate the voltage coming from the AFM to ECU with the DFA and get the air/fuel in a good range.. What are your thoughts on calibrating the AFM flap with the Throttle position.. Cheers Alan
  5. Galderdi Yeah my performance was much better over 4000rpm but also idles much better. Still love the new AFM. Not sure why the rewiring had to happen, my loom has only five pins that went directly in without change. I know the Toyota AFM has two additional pins for the fuel pump cutoff but that doesn't come into play on my loom. Glad to hear you've got it going.. Now it's time for a Jaycar Digital Fuel Adjuster, I have had one for a while, and gives me lots of control over the AFM to ECU voltages.. Alan
  6. Wow, I'm amazed, I had no such things happening at all. Galderdi, you might need to adjust the coil spring if it is hunting, maybe running to lean or rich at idle, first I would try the idle air adjuster on the Toyota AFM there is a cap in the same position as the 280z AFM has for adjusting the air flow that goes thru the AFM for idle air ratio, if you haven't drilled out that cap, it's time to do so.. Better still if you had and Air Fuel gauge, but you will tell straight away when you adjust the screw.. Stevo I wouldn't be cutting and crimping just yet, pull the original plug to the AFM on the 280z loom apart and check it out. Try a multimeter test for resistance on all pins. Then maybe try and test the wires back to the ECU, maybe a wire broke when you were first changing the AFM. Are the injectors clicking ?? Is there voltage at the AFM when cranking ( test the larger prong in the Toyata AFM with a multimeter, should be a small voltage there when cranking 2 - 4 volts ?? Have you checked the water temp sensor. Let me know how you go guys.
  7. Hey guys Sorry to hear you have a couple of issues. I didn't have a problem with the throttle body side of the AFM size, cause I had a larger 70mm throttle body from a Commordore on there, Galderdi you mentioned that the throttle body side of the Toyota AFM was 90mm, this doesn't sound correct, I'm sure mine was 75mm to 80mm no more, I might remeasure it tomorrow and check. Does the Toyota AFM look the same as my pictures ?? Stevo Not sure why you have the idling problem, did it run ok ?? Maybe check the water temp sensor for the ECU, I had this problem recently when the plug came loose, and the car wouldn't idle, was extremely rich. Alan

Hi all Well I was on my way there, and headlights decided to fail, got to the Green parked next to the red and white 240z there (very nice by the way guys) went inside and looked everywhere for all, considering I don't know what anyone looks like and I wasn't about to walk around asking groups of people why they were there. I had a beer then had another look around then gave up, my headlights were on my mind. Slowly drove back to St Kilda. Now researching my headlight prob. Button on the indicator arm works and high beam comes on. Pull the indicator arm back ...no high beam Parkers work. I will have to pull the steering column light assembly off and check switches. Or is there a relay somewhere I don't know about, as this hasn't happens before..any feedback appreciated. Can you guys wear VicZcar T shirts next time. Sorry I missed out...Alan
  10. stevo finally got to the wreckers today, i got my AFM off a 99 Toyota Camry, (4 cylinder, east west motor) just make sure you get the same shape as what i got photos above,, the square shaped plastic covered AFM are MAP versions..and wont work.. Good luck

  15. No probs I will go to Imlachs this weekend, cause they are not open due to Easter and find the model for you. There were at least six of them there cause I was searching for a good clean one and came across Toyota after Toyota in a row with them. I do know that it was definitely a four cylinder Toyota, and I'm pretty sure they were from 1999 thru to 2002 ?? And they were all definitely attached to a black air filter box and all AFM had a label saying Air Flow Meter ( have a look at the above photos) I may go buy another this weekend as a spare cant go wrong for $30 Hope this helps a bit, Alan

Like I mentioned, no need to modify anything just pop it in and away you go..only thing I did was tighten the spring three teeth.. alan
  17. Yeah Definitely an improvement in power, especially top end, I am still dialing it in..but I am wrapped with the difference.. The AFM was from a Toyota, sorry didn't get the model, But it was a four cylinder and the AFM was attached to a air box, and I believe it was a 1999, silly bugger I am, but I was more exited to find the part. but I will go back to Imlachs this Saturday and have a look, ( cause i feel guilty ) but there were at least six there that i saw, $30, not a bad investment in my books. All were labelled with an AIr Flow Meter sticker and a model number etc. I have taken photos of the label and the whole inside of the unit and will post them on in the next couple of days..when I learn how to do it on here.. Thought everything was ok, as the car is running really well, just couldnt really understand why the pressure would drop if it had no where to go. like i said, it was something that i hadnt noticed before, see what happens when you add things to the engine that show you what it is doing (pressure gauge) Btw have a look at my post about the larger AFM for the 280z, i was very excited that it worked out the way it did. i will post photos as soon as i work out how to.. have a great Easter..
  19. Well I went to Imalchs on the weekend and picked up a larger AFM 2 x 2.5" $30 from a Toyota. Took it home and did all the tests on it. All tests were exactly the same as the original 280 AFM, i was pleasantly surprised. Even put a voltage through it , and range was the same as the Z.. Put it in the car, Started like a dream, my air fuel gauge was sitting better than it ever had. The only thing I did was clean it and tension the spring three teeth tighter, runs smoother, with more grunt in the top end. There was no need to exchange circuit boards or anything. I'm curious why I haven't been able to find anything on the web about this, especially being a direct change to a larger AFM. If anyone need photos let me know.. Alan
  20. Thanks Simon Yeah it happens while doing nothing overnight. And I've never noticed this before, The reason I'm probably asking is that, I went to the wreckers on the weekend and pulled off a pressure regulator from another Z, this car had probably been sitting there for months or years. When I took it off it still had heaps off pressure behind it. Which makes me think I have a problem somewhere..
  21. Hi all and HAPPY EASTER more time to work on the Z I have a L28 EFI Lately I have noticed that the fuel pressure drops to zero overnight. I have a pressure gauge next to the pressure regulator, when I start it up the gauge jumps straight to 38psi no problem. At idle she sits at approx 34psi, when I rev it goes upto 37psi. If I disconnect the vacuum on the regulator it jumps to 37psi. Could I have faulty regulator, a leak somewhere ( that I haven't found yet) or a sus injector or two. Car runs really well, no issues. Not sure if the lines hold pressure all the time or not Thanks

  25. Thanks Zedman Yeah I currently have the resonator in the middle of the 2" setup and sounds smooth not barky. But the pipes are now getting way to old, time to upgrade to the 2.5". Cheers
