Hi Guys,

As many of you know I currently work as the CEO for a National Children's Charity that works with Child victims of abuse, neglect and abandonment.  On November 6 we are having a HUGE walkathon in Victoria at Lysterfield lake from 10am.  I am hoping that some of you guys who have asked about supporting this charity might either be able to participate or sponsor me at http://www.mycause.com.au/mycause/raise_money/fundraise.php?id=17764.

Last year alone we had over 250,000 reported cases of child abuse in Australia, that's one every 2 minutes.  This Fun Walk is about joining our voices with others in saying 'NO' to child abuse and raising the urgent funds for traumatised kids to attend our camps.

Thanks for your support,

REV.

Hey Rev

As a Father to two young Kids, the thought of anyone being cruel to them is not something I like to think about. As I can't make the walk, I have made a donation to the site.

All the best with it, you have my support any time. Thanks for making such a difference.

Cheers

Rev,

I don't walk anywhere - that's why the good Lord gave us Zeds  8)

I have tried to sponsor you but there seems to be some sort of problem.  I got this message:

You have an error in your SQL syntax; check the manual that corresponds to your MySQL server version for the right syntax to use near 'AND event_id = 551' at line 5

I obviously have no idea what it means, but would like to make a donation.

Give me a call when you can.

*Spoke to Donna - she seems lovely - and it went through - TWICE.  Now you have to walk with twice the gusto!!!!!

Donation made both for the obvious worthiness of the cause and for the respect and contribution you make to this site.

You should feel free to sprout about what your organization does for these kids. I have never been really close to this sort of a situation in my experience but I find it difficult to imagine a more vulnerable or deplorable situation for this population of victims.

I was once a person who organised many camps for kids. The value of the camp experience to kids is exemplified by the number of ex participants who say to me that these camps were the most memorable and valuable experiences of their school experience. Appropriately facilitated camps with a targeted population and a well designed program can be exceptionally effective in assisting youngsters to be exposed to some positive experiences and life skills that might stay with them for the rest of their lives.

All the best for your cause.

Thanks Simon and Dave,

I appreciate your words and support.  Thought I would let people know that all donations over $2.00 are Tax Deductable and any donation of $1000 or more gets you...well gets you a great feeling and a tax deduction!

Cheers,

Rev.

Hey Brother,

Sulio has the AusZcar Banner - might be worth you giving him a call to organise picking it up?

Donation made & I'll see you on the walk on the 6th! (as long as I don't have to work... :-\ )

Thanks Lurchos, I'll call Sul's and see if I can get it for the event.  At the moment all the donations from AusZcar has made it a major sponsor - well done guys!  even if you can only afford to donate $10, I promise it can make a difference in the life of a child.  It seems if I was fundraising for land rights for gay whales I'd have more funds than I need, but abused and hurting kids few people really give a stuff, so I really commend you guys who have made an effort.  My sincere thanks!

If you were supporting land rights for gay whales, you wouldn't need to raise funds as that cause would have massive Govt support!!  I don't really agree that people don't give stuff about abused kids.  Thankfully most people will go their entire lives without seeing the devastation caused by the abuse of our young (and our elderly for that matter).  I also think that most people would rather think about other things than try to imagine the trauma caused by physical, sexual and mental abuse of our children - and the anger and disgust that those thoughts generate.

I suspect that it is these reasons that support is sometimes slow and difficult to generate.  I believe that Good Friday is a prime example of the love and protection we all feel for the children of this country.

To put a small visualisation forward - I'm sure many of you remember seeing the Staffy pup on the news that had had it's tail and ears cut off with a pair of scissors.  They called him 'Lucky'.  I'm sure that many of you were affected by those images, I know my wife certainly wanted to adopt him.  Well I can tell you that in way too many cases, this sort of harm is brought onto our young - frequently even worse.

Then there is the mental trauma of seeing and hearing parents fight.  I'm not talking about parents having a heated discussion, but Mum and Dad punching the shiver out of each other on a regular basis.  I've seen this cause two types of ongoing response; one a child that hides and flinches at the slightest noise growing up to never trust anyone and display some strange (often self destructive) behaviour and the other grows up with no developed concept of conflict resolution who is constantly involved in fights throughout their lives and continues the violent cycle or chooses a partner later in life that is violent.  There are other types of mental abuse that can best (but over simply) described as bullying; constant denigration, name calling, belittling etc.  Often these produce the same results as the physical abuse.

Then there is the completely reprehensible and incomprehensible sexual abuse of our children.  I have had people try to explain to me in the past how it is acceptable to find a 4 or 5 year old child sexually attractive.  Thankfully I don't believe that I will ever understand, but there are people who very much believe it understandable.  I've even had it compared to homosexuality!  That it is simply a sexual preference that is genetically predetermined.  I strongly believe that is crap, but they don't.  The damage done to our children in these circumstances is, in my opinion, worst than the others combined.  These children grow up with physical scars and mental scars that will never heal.  Regardless of the fine work done by Rev and his colleagues, these children will grow up 'broken'.  They will struggle to trust anyone, they will be unlikely to ever have a 'normal' loving relationship. they will be unlikely to enjoy a normal sex life later in life, they have a greater potential to perpetuate the abuse on other children (continuing the cycle of abuse) and ironically they have a greater chance of becoming sex workers.

It is true that if there is intervention early in the child's life from someone that shows genuine care, many of these outcomes can change.  If the child can be shown that their life to date is not the norm, that people can love them without hurting them, if they can learn to trust, if they can learn to trust and respect themselves and they can be removed from harm and raised in a safe and loving environment, they can heal, they can grow and they just may learn to love (trust) others and more importantly, themselves.

This is where Rev and his colleagues come in.  Rev provides these children with support, trust and love.  He provides them with the tools to deal with their pain.  He sets them up to have a 'normal' life.

So as you work on your cars this weekend, ask yourself "Do I really need a new set of spark plugs or can I re-gap these ones and they'll do for a few months?  Could Rev do with that money instead?  Would I feel good about myself if I knew that I had done a bit to litterally save a life?"

Whilst I'm not fully up to date with the level of membership of this forum, but if every member of the forum gave just $5, your target would be met and the lives of many of our children would be dramatically changed for the better.

After you have donated on-line - using the link in the Rev's post - go outside with your kids and play with them - or just sit a watch them play if you're a little infirm like me - sit and talk with them - talk about what they want to talk about - hug them and tell them they are special and that you will always love them.

But donate first!!

Thanks for the extra donations that have come through in the last few days.  I don't think I'm gonna reach my target but I'm happy with progress made.  Would be great to see some of the Zed fraternity there next Saturday 6 Nov at Lysterfield lake (exceptional drive to get there) you can get more details at www.sckc.com.au or if you haven't sponsored me to do the ONE VOICE - walk against child abuse and would like to, here's the link  http://www.mycause.com.au/mycause/raise_money/fundraise.php?id=17764

Thanks guys,

WOW The ONE VOICE walk against child abuse has so far raised over $9000 in our online sponsorship - help us to make the $10K by tonight and help the work of Southern Cross Kids Camps to make a difference in the lives of abused and neglected children in our nation. I am so proud of the way friends from all over the world have contributed to invest in the lives of this generation and especially my Auszcar mates (who have been among my major supporters!)  The walk is on Saturday, would love you to come,if not dig deep and see if you can help us get more kids to camps.
