I tried to buy an interesting Skyline today but was not quite sure what the car was... I think it is a base model GX Skyline Coupe 4 cylinder, 4 speed,  1.8 litre with rear leaf springs as opposed to a GTR with 2.0 litre twin cam, independant rear end and rear fender flares. ...???

Here is a picture and auction sheet. and a pic and sheet of a similar GTR (These are off the dial expensive in Japan) Who can shed some light on the differences in the cars and the difference in value.

I think it would be a nice car to plonk an RB into..... What do you think?

and another one that baffled and intrigued me today..... I think it's a Cedric - but thought they were all sedans!

please please please don't RB25oid the skyline. Some cars deserve to remain orig. Not to mention they retain their value better that way.

Don't know alot about the C10 skyline range (maybe because they were not exported from Japan) the auction sheet looks to have 1800cc on it as you state but the chassis code listed is wrong. The KPGC10 = GTR aka S20 powered. The stock L20a aka GT-X is a KGC10 now given this is 1800 it should have a Chassis code of GC10 (if my understanding of the chassis code is like other Nissan models but that is not always the case back in the 70's very very confusing that's for sure)

The Cedric looks like the 230 version a 2 door hardtop - nice car would make a good family car :) in Japan they like to lower them. Other version is the 4 door hardtop (pillerless) then they also have the stock version that you know and love as the 240c or 260c - but again not badged or marketed as just in Japan due to the local tax laws of the day most were L20a or SD22 powered and sold/marketed as Cedrics or Gloria's depending on the trim spec etc.

I think it would nice to have a 330 wagon for a tow car for a zed :) not sure what the chassis code is for one of those but V330 or W330 maybe however $$ and wife will not let me have another car currently.

As far as I know the Skyline was available with an L20. However I've not seen them with a 4 banger.

This car wouldn't be a GTR as the only car that can be called that would have to be stamped KPGC10.

I've read various information about them before, but don't have it handy. Maybe someone can chime in.

*** NZeder replied just before me :)

The second Skyline pic you posted is a GT-X ie original L20a powered but given it states 3000cc. It has had the normal performance mod of a bored/stroked L28 getting installed so that is a KGC10 you see the P = S20 = GTR = DOHC = 2x or 3x the price.

There are differences between these cars and the price reflects that.

So the second car is still not a GTR but has the overfenders like the original GTR  - hard isn't it. And this is a case of research before you start purchasing cars so you know what you are getting etc.

Now this does not hold true for all Nissan chassis codes but does work in some cases so might give you a bit of an idea. This does also tie in the pics/auction sheets you have posted in this thread. But again this is not away true

K = Coupe version ie 2 doors (assumes the model has a 4 door - note the S30 does not have a K as they are only 2 doors - this is going to get confusing)

P = Special engine version ie S20 in the S30 and C10 ranges - and other it means a L series 4 cylinder not a A series 4 cylinder

G = longwheel base floor plan or 6 cylinder (this is for models that have a short floorpan version or 6 cylinder installed ie Skyline C10 and C110, C111 which had 4 cylinder options also also so did some bluebirds ie there is L20a powered 610 did you guys know that?) the G = 2+2 aka longwheel base in the S30/S130 range

So are you confused yet? I know I get confused and then you also have to take into account what model car you are talking about as the letter mean something different on each model (well they can)

ahhh you have to love this.....not.

So apply this info (which I know works on the Skyline range - well the C10 and C110/C111 not idea after that ie C210/C211)

The first car is a KC10 = 2 door C10 with a 4 cylinder

The second car is a KGC10 = 2 door C10 with a 6 cylinder but not a GTR with the S20

The 230 you have  = K230 = 2 door 230

Hope that helps.........

doudous,

I don't want to rub your nose in it, but just a couple of days ago you were offering your services as an import sourcing agent for these types of cars from Japan. And now here you are showing just how little you appear to know about them......

There is an absolutely huge difference between a KC10 and a KGC10 ( an RB would be a pretty tight fit in place of a little G-series four banger ), and you don't even seem to be able to spot the most elementary difference between a KGC10 with "GT-R shiyo" external mods and a genuine KPGC10 'GT-R'. I find that positively scary

Anyone who asks you to source a car for them could well find themselves knee deep in doudous when it turns up.

Yep that's why you can race some 610's with an L28 in them.

I understand what you are getting at Alan, but at least he is asking us for help identifying these vehicles. We all have to start somewhere too I guess... :)

Gav,

You should work for the United Nations.

Yes, he is asking for advice / identification help, but - bearing in mind his business activities - don't you think he should have been asking these questions ( and more ) a long time before he started offering his services in sourcing them from Japan? If I was thinking of bringing such a car in from Japan, I'd want the sourcing agent to know at least as much as me and preferably more about model variation, factory specs and relative values.

This is exactly what happened with the girl here in the UK who asked an agent to find her an "early GT-R". She ended up with a piece of sh*t KGC10 that the agent was convinced was a genuine GT-R ( because he didn't know any better ) and she didn't know enough - or get the advice - to know any different when she paid for it. When it turned up in the UK - too late for her to back out of the deal - all was revealed. The agent still didn't understand the difference between a 'GT-R lookalike' and a genuine GT-R, and wondered what all the fuss was about  :o

Still, you pays your money and you takes your choice - eh? At least this thread points towards some of the possible pitfalls that await you should you choose the wrong person to help you......

HS30-H  - You are such a smart guy - you seem to know it all.

I do not, and I do not pretend to.

I do not pretend to offer my services as an expert in early model skylines... far from it. You can get a historian to offer that service.

To source one for you, inspect it for you, check it for damage and rust and research it for you- it's not rocket science. If there is something I do not know about a car I will tell you "I do not know"...

Most cars I buy on a daily basis I do know a great deal about - please feel free to test me on these cars... if it's important to you.

In the interest of gaining more knowledge about a product I would like to import and sell I have made a post, cap in hand asking more informed people than myself to share their knowledge.

Thus far this forum has been a terrific source of information from friendly, helpful people with a common interest until you stuck your 2 cents in - which has contributed nothing to the other members of the forum and been rather unpleasant.

If you havn't got something to add to the topic of this thread - bugger off!

Please be factual if you must be so unpleasent. I have never offered my services to anyone on this forum. I have mentioned this to you more than once now.

HS30-H    Why is it that whenever I see a post from you on various forums your always arguing with people  ::)

I think if we were in the pub having the same conversation over a beer with the same lovely crowd gathered discussing early Skylines, your tone would be somewhat different...

Easy to be a bully when you are safely at home in your bedroom. What does a bully gain from being a bully?

That may well be your impression (  ;) ), but I can assure you that I most certainbly don't, and I don't believe that I pretend to either.

Are you trying to sell something to me again, or am I just imagining it?  ;D

To be honest, if I wanted to source a car from Japan using any kind of 'agent', I'd much rather talk direct to the guy on the ground in Japan. I don't think having someone like you in between me and the guy who really does the legwork would be all that useful. Unless I'm mistaken and you yourself personally find, inspect and report on the car, in person?

Thus far this forum has been a terrific source of information from friendly, helpful people with a common interest until you stuck your 2 cents in - which has contributed nothing to the other members of the forum and been rather unpleasant.

Well I'm sorry it's all been so unpleasant for you, but I beg to differ over the question of whether my "2 cents" have contributed anything to the "other members". But then of course I would say that, wouldn't I?  :)

If you havn't got something to add to the topic of this thread - bugger off!

I believe I'm on topic ( see below for another '2 cents' worth ) but your invitation to "bugger off!" is duly noted, thanks.

I have never offered my services to anyone on this forum. I have mentioned this to you more than once now.

No, sorry. You've gone back and edited your posts now (  ::) ) but you were indulging in a little bit of 'advertorial' and somewhat subliminal advertising, weren't you? Like that video clip of the car that you just bought 'for yourself' - but which is already up for sale: http://www.japaneseautocentre.com.au/el/zoom.php?id=1492

For the record, that car is not a "Datsun 260Z" - so you are either misrepresenting it on purpose, or you just don't understand what it is.

I think if we were in the pub having the same conversation over a beer with the same lovely crowd gathered discussing early Skylines, your tone would be somewhat different...

Well ( stop me if you've heard this one before ), I don't agree. I'd like to think I'd be asking you the same questions ( in the same way ), but I think you might be taking it differently. To be true to what's happening on this forum, you'd be standing at the bar wearing a sandwich board advertising "Edward Lee's Japanese Auto Centre" ( "We are Australia's Number 1 Import Dealer with the best and biggest selection of Import cars in Australia" ) and I'd be trying to keep a straight face.

I would buy you a beer though. Even if you told me to "Bugger off!"  :D

doudous,

If you keep on editing your posts, especially after they have been replied to, the whole structure of the thread will become quite messy.

For the record, I'm not in my bedroom. Sorry to spoil your fantasy (  ;) ) but I'm in my office. I find the office environment contributes to a much more professional internet 'bullying' service.  ::)

To be serious for a moment here, I mentioned on the other thread that one of the main reasons traders find it difficult to participate in forums like this as civilians is that they usually can't manage to keep their business activities and their forum participation from crossing over. This thread - where you are 'innocently' asking "What is it? What is it worth?" would be perfectly fine if it were started by somebody who was thinking of buying such a car for themselves. In your case, I think the situation is rather different - is it not? That Fairlady Z you implied you were importing for yourself is already for sale with your family's business, isn't it? It seems to me that you are asking advice from people in order to use it for business purposes - whether you actually realise that or not ( ? ).

You're a trader, and I believe you have to accept the implications of that when you participate in forums like this.

Thanks for the ad mate - you are a tool. It's not why I am on the forum. Idiots like you make it too hard. I am sure you are in a large and impressive office.

Carsales.com, drive.com, ebay, trading post do not have a Nissan Fairlady Z designation hence 260Z.

It hasn't "all been been so unpleasant" - just you have been unpleasant. Get a life, grow up, recover from short man syndrome. My cars are for sale. So what? I am not advertising them here - I am on this forum as an enthusiast not as a dealer or advertiser.

But you are right...  it is the wrong place for a car dealer such as myself. i will not be making any more posts

I have learnt heaps from listening to you :) It's hard to find out much about a cars history without someone telling you. So for that, thank you. IMO, doudous, it was pretty silly asking about these cars... Your meant to be an importer which means you should know about the car, if not, you shouldn't import it because when it gets here, you could theoretically sell it for $48 000 to someone who doesn't know and they would be stuck with an almost worthless (COmpared to the legit thing) replica... Theoretically ofcourse...

LOL this is almost comedy.

anyway for whats it worth

i still want to see what these jap cars are worth and if can be sent over here.

to me as a buyer i need to know what im buying. i need to do research myself. if im silly to buy something that i dont know anything about well thats my funeral.

few key things buying cars online.and i bought quite a few.

a. PICTURES always look lot better than it actualy is

b. dont get too attached.bid or offer with your brain not heart.if something looks dodgy it probably is.

c. if possible have a look at the car your self if not expect nasty suprises factor that in your price.

there is a story how a prominent figure bought a expensive muscle car and not doing his research properly and being disatisfied about it few rumors have emerged the car is fake etc to get his money back.... possibly is but maybe just wasnt up to scratch who knows and personaly dont care.

I dont blame the auction house or who ever did the research if u dumb enough to give lot of your supposedly hard earned cash for something u dont know about well stiff. do your homework better. dont rely on someone else to do it for you while you sit on your arse drinking tea while someone does the hard yards for ya.

anyway i still want hs30 around and doudus so i hope u two can coexist just hopefully lot less carnage.

yeah a rb26det be nice in that skyline. if they fitted an l28 im sure rb will fit too. somewhow  :P bit of push and tuck here just like in the cartoons. hihihihihih

This whole fiasco makes me feel awkward about asking questions! Dealer aside, he is an enthusiest, as am i, but im still far from remembering every z car and their differences. Harsh but fair yes, but not welcoming another z car lover? Dunno, i sit on the fence.
