RB30X Posted January 4, 2010 Author Posted January 4, 2010 During the Chrissy holidays it was a bit warm to really do much so the Zed got neglected, until it started raining a bit which cooled things down. I tried wiring up a few of the spare alternators I had sitting around from this car and the 280zx's but they all needed external regulators. It was too complex for me to merge a 280zx wiring diagram with a 240z's so I asked an auto electrical parts store to recommend a generic external regulator. (You may have read the following from the thread in the electrical section) A BOSCH RE55 was the answer. Now how do they work??, I've drawn up a diagram to help anyone attempting the same job I've just done. Makes sense really, starting from scratch without all these extra wires. The reg has two pins in a tee, like the alternator does (see pic) The D+ pin gets a feed from the battery when the ignition is on only (otherwise it would drain the battery with engine off), this voltage is feed into the regulator which determines how much charge the battery needs, and regulates the voltage coming out of the DF pin. This can "regulate" from 0-12V determined by battery requirements. This "regulated voltage 'excites' the coil in the alternator via the F pin, determining how much charge comes out of the A pin which directly feeds the battery. Hope that makes sense. Santa (AKA AllZparts) also dropped me off a late prezzy yesterday, it probably sat at my local friegh site over christmas and new years while I was on holidays and got delivered the day I go back to work Anyway, better late than never. It hasn't been fully installed yet but it seems to fit well. I'll have to make up a support bracket to keep the lip from bending under at high speeds. Urethane is soooo good to work with, I wish all spoilers were made from it. Mind you I haven't tried painting it yet. Hopefully there might be some coil over sleeves next on the list. Quote
RB30X Posted January 9, 2010 Author Posted January 9, 2010 I put the front and rear screens in today thanks to some advice from some knowledgable fellas on this site. Now I can go nuts putting the interior back in ;D ;D Quote
chartoo Posted January 9, 2010 Posted January 9, 2010 Looking good. You must be getting excited now. Nearly finshed. Quote
RB30X Posted January 9, 2010 Author Posted January 9, 2010 Looking good. You must be getting excited now. Nearly finshed. Thanks mate but there is a long road ahead of me yet. Quote
peter t Posted January 10, 2010 Posted January 10, 2010 As everyone else says " Looks good Tim" I guess if I do another Z it would have to be a 2 seater but by the time I finish mine there won't be too many around or too expensive to start with. I used some parts of that box I got from you so all was not lost. Back up to CQ this week with work so not much is going to get done to my car unless the guy doing the interior comes and does the hood lining. Keep at it mate. Quote
RB30X Posted February 9, 2010 Author Posted February 9, 2010 Well I don't have much of an update except I finally bit the bullet and almost emptied the 'Zed' fund on a new air compressor. I'm glad I got a good one though. Spent a while sand blasting when I first got it and she never ran out of puff. I did actually buy something else for the Zed, a Nickel plating kit. So I've been sand blasting bits and pieces and then Nickel plating them. I'm getting better every time I do it but I haven't really polished any of them up yet as I need to get a buffing wheel for my bench grinder. I have just got back from the hospital today after getting my appendix out, so there won't be much happening here for a while either. In the box below is some bits I acid dipped (then left too long in the air to get rusty again) and some sand blasted bits. Here is some pieces with one coating of nickel. Then they say if you do a coating of Copper, then another coating of Nickel you'll have a very hard, very shiny, corrosion resistant surface. I also bought a length of weather strip for the hatch the other day. Not sure if it is the right stuff though as the hatch is really hard to close now. Does this look different to everyone elses strip? Cheers Quote
Riceburner Posted February 9, 2010 Posted February 9, 2010 Hey Tim, My hatch seal is all rubber rectangular, very soft and doesn't the metal spline/ribbing thingy on the back. It look very old and its a 73 240z. That could make a good bonnet seal, stop some of the petrol fumes Also just wondering where you got the plating machine and how much? Quote
RB30X Posted February 9, 2010 Author Posted February 9, 2010 Do you have any pics of your strip? The kit is from Janekits and they contain everything you need for plating. Quote
MaygZ Posted February 10, 2010 Posted February 10, 2010 G'day Tim, Looking good. What size compressor did you get to run your sand-blaster? Do you run anything else from it? I'm looking to get one that will run a sand_blaster, but be able to run air tools (chisel) and maybe a paint gun. Not at the same time, obviously. I'm not that good Quote
RB30X Posted February 10, 2010 Author Posted February 10, 2010 Without going out to the shed I'm pretty sure mine was close to the biggest you could get whilst remaining with a 10 amp plug (watch out for this). Twin piston belt drive with a 70Litre tank, good quality tank, bore and heads etc, from a mans toy shop. What I'm also thinking of doing is stripping the old tank and hooking up air fittings to it so together I'll have about 140-150 liters. If you look on air tool boxes in the shops they tell you what they use roughly in L/min. Things like air blasters and air sanders use quite a bit. I'm pretty sure mine puts out about 250L/min, which is by no means industrial but suits me. Quote
V8Datto Posted February 11, 2010 Posted February 11, 2010 Make sure you do your home work on air compressors for sand blasting, I use two $800 belt driven compressors for my blaster and it's only really good for small stuff. anything big like doors, bonnet, etc I take them down to the real blasters, It would take me hours to blast something the size of a z door using my setup, and that's hours I don't have I want one of those platers, that's cool Quote
RB30X Posted February 11, 2010 Author Posted February 11, 2010 Absolutely, I'll only ever be doing auto parts, never panels. Quote
Riceburner Posted February 11, 2010 Posted February 11, 2010 I can't take a good quality pic of mine, but it's the same as this. Has a folded rubber edge that goes inside the car and is glued on. Quote
MaygZ Posted February 11, 2010 Posted February 11, 2010 Thanks Tim. Might start a seperate post on recommended tools/toys. Quote
RB30X Posted February 13, 2010 Author Posted February 13, 2010 Ok, those who are half serious about restoring/doing up an old car need to pop down to where ever and buy themselves an air compressor and a sandblasting cabinet. My name is Tim. And I am a sand blasting addict. Quote
Moderators Zedman240® Posted February 13, 2010 Moderators Posted February 13, 2010 Hahaha...you're not wrong! Looks awesome. Gotta get me one now! Quote
hunterzed Posted February 13, 2010 Posted February 13, 2010 Hey Tim. Did you get the weather strip from C. Ede's in South Townsville? If you can get a sample of what you want they can order stuff in as well. They were always really good to me when I built up my Toranan and the Mini. Steve Quote
RB30X Posted February 13, 2010 Author Posted February 13, 2010 Ok thanks. I just tried to look at pics of what people had on here (not that they really show in pics) and just walked into Clark rubber. I even looked up the rubber profile that black dragon sell and it looked similar. Quote
hunterzed Posted February 14, 2010 Posted February 14, 2010 The pinch weld stuff will sit a little prouder than OEM but it will have a good seal and will settle down after a while anyway. You don't have to glue it on either. Steve Quote
MaygZ Posted February 15, 2010 Posted February 15, 2010 My name is Simon, and I dream about becoming a sand-blasting addict!!! Quote
V8Datto Posted February 16, 2010 Posted February 16, 2010 Don't worry you'll get over it fast, while the out come is a clean rust free finish Every thing in between is very unpleasant, Quote
RB30X Posted March 29, 2010 Author Posted March 29, 2010 Not much to report at the moment due to my wife giving birth to our third little boy last week. I have a month off work now with a list of jobs I want to complete (mostly Zed stuff) but at this stage I can hardly make it to the shed :'( Just a quick pic of some prezzies I've collected. A set of coil over sleeves and some R31 rear calipers and brackets. I still have to find out what rotors and mods are required to suit this set up and what not as I did a heap of research before I bought em now I forget. Also looking at getting a weather strip kit from the states with the good AUD but they are out of stock atm. Hoping they get some soon. Then once she's all sealed up I can start putting the interior back in. Watching everyone elses builds coming along is keeping me inspired . . . . . . . . and wondering, how many hours is there in one of RevZed's days, 36-60hrs?? What will Lurch do when he sells that car, and what is next?? Cheers Tim Quote
C.A.R. Posted March 29, 2010 Posted March 29, 2010 Congrats on the new Pooping machine Tim With the R31 setup, you just use the R31 rotors as well. As for the bracket, here is how you have to modifiy them. I made these as a left & a right pair, the hub has to be enlarged to suit the Z hub Dia. & the mounting holes have to be redrilled to a larger PCD. Photo's speak a thousand words... Oh & BTW, there's more Zed wrangling going on atm, than I care to mention... Quote
