nizm0zed
ok, well, here it is. dont expect updates often, im pretty slow when it actually comes to doing anything to my cars. I bought my zed in july 07, heard about it through a friend, so i went and looked at it before the old owner was going to put it on the classifieds. he was asking $1000 for it, and to be honest i was expecting a rust eaten s*&^#er. Once i got there, i found out it was a coupe, not a 2+2 like i was expecting. he explained that it was very hard to start, and the starter was stuffed, so it took lots of push starting, and that he thought it had a blown head gasket. It also had some acco damage in one rear quarter, and lots of carpark dents over the doors. I haggled and dropped him to $800. had he have known what he actually had, he could have made $3000 easy within a week. I caught a bus all the way across town to pick up my new toy, and met up with my bro once i took delivery of it. We drove back to my place, and he was quite amazed that a 30yr old car would pull away from his VZ commo. So was i to be honest. I took pics of it that night. my 260z 01 by Alan Hartcher, on Flickr my 260z 02 by Alan Hartcher, on Flickr my 260z 03 by Alan Hartcher, on Flickr once i got a chance in the daylight i went over it and had a real good look. the biggest patch of rust i found was on the side of the RH headlight, in the front nose section, just behind where the bonnet hinge bolts on, Its about the size of my hand, so that'll need fixing asap, but everywhere else is just little bits, prolly no bigger than 4-5cm, im cheerin. I also found a CD walkman under the passenger seat, SCORE!!!!! the diff was redone not so long ago, still got a workshop sticker on it, no leaks from the engine or driveline, just a minor seepage from the sump gasket. the exhaust looked alright, but needed modding, its a one piece system from the extractors right back to the tip, with only one resonator in it. It failed rego, but jeez it sounds hot. as for my starter motor dilemma, i discovered that a starter form a RB30 will bolt in, good thing i had a couple of spares. the battery was shot, so a spare went in. my to do before rego list is: New windscreen LH door window reg (mine sorta works) LH door handle busted rust in the RH headlight frame couple of light globes Cover the rust in the hatch (its on the inside) mod the exhaust, too loud and hits on the diff cradle So, after that, i went and got an inspection done. It failed. the exhaust is too loud. 115dB (5dB quieter than a helicopter ) Play in the front tailshaft uni joint, easy job to fix, and a busted door handle, which i expected. So, i swapped the door handles over either side, put a muffler in the system, and greased the uni's then went and regoed it. I used it as a daily for about 6 months, until i blew up the motor. I had heard about the oil pressure gauges being temperamental after 30+ years, and didnt really think aything of the fact that mine barely even registered, until after about 3 monts of nil pressure, one of the crank bearings finally went. tough motors Now, i have a 2.8L for it, a big turbo, and Injection, so im doing a rebuild. first up came stripping off the front end, and repairing the rusty patch in the headlight frame. I was very pleased to find minimal surface rust under the guards. I sold off the metal panels, as i have aquired some fibreglass ones from Alfa Motorsports. i have allready made a nice weight saving on that one. i have a FG rear hatch and spolier on the way as i type, been looking for FG doors and headlight buckets, but no luck yet, unless i want to spend a small fortune. I have painted under the guards with sound deadener, which will also help prevent any rust buildup. last night i got into it after work, and started cutting things out of the bay, and smooting of the wire tabs. damn, now im going to have to hide the wiring, shame huh 26082008094 by Alan Hartcher, on Flickr 26082008095 by Alan Hartcher, on Flickr 26082008096 by Alan Hartcher, on Flickr the engine being built. the head is at the shop getting done, should be back soon. once its back, i have a genuine Nismo 0.6mm MLS head gasket and an ARP head stud kit to hold it all down. 26082008097 by Alan Hartcher, on Flickr My BIG turbo, just fits under the manifold in the stock spot. 26082008098 by Alan Hartcher, on Flickr My as of yet, un touched interior. White vinyl and blue velour from factory. 26082008100 by Alan Hartcher, on Flickr more to come later......
Aaron Neubauer
Fark! That hairdryer is huge! Your bumpers look reasonably unscathed and straight too! Good buy! What is the yellow thing with flared guards in primer in the background?
chris240
$800 !!!! ...unreal. Scott told me about this car, great buy. who's doing your head work ? are you going to do most of the works yourself or give it out locally ?
nizm0zed
that yellow thing with flared guards in the background is my other coupe. A Gemini with a CA18 in it, and getting some serious panel reworking done. yea, too many toys ;D the head is being done by phillip head services, i know them and i know they do good work. i do pretty much every thing else myself

C.A.R.
What? Just because I moved interstate means the Vic Zed population goes downhill? I reckon there are more Zeds in Vic than any other state... /Puts flame suit on.
Moderators Zedman240® Posted August 28, 2008 Moderators Share Posted August 28, 2008 I know in Vic there's one that's been in a garage for the last 3 MONTHS! Dammit! Sorry...just a little frustrated!

Aaron Neubauer
Shiiiiiite! Looking good! Any anticipated figures from your engine build or just generally "fast"?
nizm0zed
Neuby, time will tell as to what sort of power it puts out, its only a 'mild' build, as i don't really want to spend a fortune on the motor, seeing as i will more than likely end up changing it anyway. I bogged on my car today Sanding will come later, hopefully tomorrow, unless i get carried away doing something else. 15092008115 by Alan Hartcher, on Flickr 15092008114 by Alan Hartcher, on Flickr And my rocker cover is all shiny too. was a pain in the ass, some previous person had put clear coat on it, and it was all flaky and crap, so lots of sanding, by hand, all the way down to 2000 grit paper, then polish by machine, then finish by hand. There are still a few blemishes, but I'm happy with it. 15092008116 by Alan Hartcher, on Flickr so far the current plan is to head to the metal shop tomorrow, and get a bunch of stainless cap screws, just to help finish it off. nizm0zed
well, had some decent progress. i was planning on just spraying around things, like the steering column and brake lines, But it turned out easier just to remove them to be done with. I sanded back all the bog, cut out some more 'obsolete' wire tabs and mounting points, and put down a coat of primer filler. 21092008121 by Alan Hartcher, on Flickr that'll get sanded back nice and smooth, then i'll drop down a new coat of primer, and add some colour. then i can start putting things back in ive been thinking about the brake master cylinder too, seeing as i need a 1 inch master, i figure i may as well use one that has the proportioning valve built in to it, and tidy up the lines a bit too. adapting it to the booster will be incredibly easy. Im planning on running the passenger front brake line along the back side of the crossmember, to keep it out of site.
chris240
your rocker cover makes me sick !!! any chance you can do mine
nizm0zed
lol, if the price is right, i guess i could. but really its not too hard, you could do it in an afternoon. If you want, you can get a polishing kit from bunnings for about $30 that'll go onto a drill, good for getting the hard work done
nizm0zed
well, did some stuff this weekend. sanded down the primer filler, and put a coat of primer over it, to give a good base for the colour. 05102008132 by Alan Hartcher, on Flickr and then, my new paint, yeehaa baby!!! 05102008133 by Alan Hartcher, on Flickr 05102008134 by Alan Hartcher, on Flickr Still needs more coats, as its thin in places, and has some runs, so i'll sort those out and the engine bay will be ready for re-assembly. Not bad for someone who is self taught at spray painting.

sco_aus
Thanks, but no thanks. I always stuff painting up and I dont have the patients to do it properly. Its ok, I am taking it to a guy who will give me a quote for backyardie next week. He's a spray painter, so it should be ok.
