Datsun 260z 2+2 Auto - $17500

Chassis GRS30-000516

03/1974 Australian Compliance

The car was a regular drive for an elderly guy in Perth, WA, who had done a small restoration. From what I know it was re-painted in the original Light Blue Metallic, had door and window seals, carpets, radiator renewed. I have no idea if the engine was swapped at the same time but it now has an L28 (engine number L28-604966) with P90 head and N36 Intake Manifold with Flat Tops, with most of the SMOG gear taken off.  The Auto Gearbox was rebuilt at the same time which I have a receipt for, and it appears the car has only done 1000 Kms since.

The car hasn’t been road registered since 2009 when it was purchased by the direct previous owner. It then spent 10 years in dry storage in Karlgoorlie WA, started once a week and drive a 5-10 kms each month. The guy who owned it for the 10 years bought it without really knowing much about Datsun’s, but loved the body shape and covered it in waxoyl/fish oil to look after for the underbody and usual rust areas until he could start a V8 conversion.

I bought the car sight unseen on the basis of a thousand pictures, and a general judge of character of the guy selling, and I wasn’t disappointed. He gave me so much info about the car and the pictures were 100% legit – he showed me every little thing I would possibly need to know/see.

I had plans of getting the car on club plates and then upgrading the normal things myself along the way. eg: Manual Box, Triple Webers, Wheels, Suspension etc, but usual story…...three Kids and lack of appropriate workshop space, but mostly my lack of patience means I’d really just like to buy something that already has the setup I am after so I can just enjoy the car with the family and not have to get too dirty in the process. I have done a full service just to be sure, and the car is running as good as it can with the flat top Carbies. It drives well and I’ve had it out for a few runs on a Unreg Permit just to test it out. The Auto Gearbox was rebuilt in 2008 which I have a receipt for, and it appears the car has only done 1000 Kms since then!

Depending on your plans, the main things you need to know:

-          Paintwork: the new paint in circa 2006-08 was obviously not well prepared, or of good quality. It has fine crows feet over most surfaces. Some surfaces (doors, bonnet, guards) have virtually nothing, some have worse signs (roof and hatch) To the naked eye from 2-3 metres, you cant see anything but upon close inspection its obvious.

-          There is only one small area of rust , which is in the front of the passenger side chassis rail just before the Radiator Support. Arches, floorplan, main chassis rails are all in really good shape.

-          There is little to no bog in the car except the Rear Hatch – which is also the spot of worst crows feet in the paintwork

-          There is a dent and rubbed paintwork on each rear quarter. They were already there when I got the car. Nothing too much to sort.

Happy for anyone to have a look over the car, unless you are in one of “those” suburbs in Melbourne! I’m based in Bayside, Melbourne.

Yeah I really felt for him, he sent me a video of it heading off on the truck and I could tell he was pretty upset. I won’t be far away from buying again, I’ve just realised (as I’m sure many have before me) that I need to spend a bit more and get something that I don’t have to work on. Lots of people love a project and turning it in to what they want, I just wanting something to enjoy without the greasy hands every weekend!

I can help you transform it into what you want now - you just have to ask ;)

I’ve read about and seen lots of your work....And I have no doubt you could. I’m not sure your business is a charity though!?

Update here guys.....after a constant stream of facebook and gumtree dreamers, I've decided to keep it and is now getting the love and attention it needs. Have the gearbox for manual conversion, suspension/front end is off and renewing it all during lockdown. I'm definitely not selling now, have fallen back in love with it!
