I use avs4you but I think there must be better, gotta remember your playing with big files.

Keen to see what this results as well.

Luv the data that you can get on cams as well, but I don't think you get a lot of change from 1500

I find the quickest way to download files is with a USB memory card reader. I've heard somewhere else that the Hero 3 silver has some issues with downloading from certain size/speed micro-sd memory modules.

As far as editing software goes, check out the GoPro website, they have some free software that looks pretty good.

At first I was like...

But then I realised, I've never used a GoPro so can't help.

It sounds like you're trying to upload the raw video file before compressing it. Which could be several gigs, you can compress it locally to bring the file size down (yes the quality will degrade slightly) then try uploading it.

Hi Pete

The guys are going to be covering this sort of thing (members from this forum) at the next ZCCQ  meeting on THURSDAY .Do you want a lift to the meeting and bring along the footage you you have .I am guessing you have some good stuff from the Christmas in July run you want to share and other events.I have to bring the lap top with me as they want to see samples of the Posters for the ZCCQ 30TH Anniversary thing, or with any luck  it will work on the TV at SHANNONS.

Thanks Aub, might take you up on that. Gav the only way I know how to compress files is to stand on them. ;D

Downloading is not a prob. Uploading is another matter even after compressing files into a Zip folder. Editing stuff is another matter altogether. Will have to have a chat with the IT geek at work and see if he will help. Last lot of vids from across the border run would not fit on a 32G stick even. Gro Pro files are Huge.. 8)

Try uploading straight into iMovie and then author it down as an MP4 ready for web (which is a preset)  That will work for you no problem!  You could then upload to dropbox and I could edit anything you wanted - just a thought Pete!

Pete and other esteemed octogenarians,  ;)

You don't want to compress it using a zip file, that is a different type of compression for documents and whatnot. What you want is video compression.

When you record stuff on your gopro, it is a very high resolution and is a (uncompressed) big file. Using video compression software, you want to compress the file into a smaller format of video file. Then upload that smaller file to youtube.

I'm hesitant to recommend a particular piece of software as I don't have a gopro myself so am not sure what file format you are starting with - you need to get the software that is capable of compressing your type of file (although that said gopros are pretty pervasive so imagine most are compatible).

I suggest you follow these steps:

1: copy the file from the gopro to your desktop

2: note the file format (This is the 3-4 letters after the file name after the dot. If there is no letters, right-click on it and select 'properties' and you can find it there).

3: go to google and search for "[file type from step 2] compression freeware", "compress [file type from step 2]", or the like.

4: download the software that you find from that search

5: install it

6: open the program you just installed and load your video file from your desktop

7: go to the settings or menu or wherever and select the compression (how much it squashes it/reduces the quality/makes the file teeny weeny) or it may just give you the option to choose an output resolution (such as 1080p 720p 540p etc like on a TV) or you may have to select it by file format. Either way, choose the smallest or second smallest one. If unsure at any point, wikipedia is your friend.

8: press the go button

9: upload your shiny new compressed file in its new file format to youtube and post the link here

Good luck

If all your wanting to do is compress it for upload to youtube you cant go past the capability and ease of use of Handbrake.

Just load it in and hit start, for rookies theres no need to even mess with settings-
