AussieZed Posted July 2, 2014 Posted July 2, 2014 A recent post on here and my upcoming 40th has tipped me over the edge ... I am looking for a 250GTO replica. I have nibbled at one before and missed out (curse you eBay) ... but this seems like a once in a lifetime opportunity to enjoy a mid-life crisis car. If you think you might be interested in selling ... please drop me a PM - I will consider incomplete projects through to complete cars, although obviously the price has to shift accordingly. Yes I know how much a good replica costs, no I'm not dreaming. Appreciate any contacts or leads.... Ross Quote

Scoota G Posted July 2, 2014 Posted July 2, 2014 The top one i caught a look at in Bendigo. The owner spent a fair amont of time on it. Supercharger was pretty cool. Quote
KatoKid Posted July 2, 2014 Posted July 2, 2014 Throw enough money at Peter Allen and he might be conviced Quote
d3c0y Posted July 2, 2014 Posted July 2, 2014 If i did one of these kits up this is the engine i would be putting in it: http://www.ebay.com.au/itm/Ferrari-550-F550-Maranello-V12-Complete-Engine-Motor-ECU-Package-J040-/141009867688?pt=AU_Car_Parts_Accessories&fits=Make%3AFerrari&hash=item20d4d7d3a8&_uhb=1 I'm surprised no one has done this yet. dat240z Posted July 3, 2014 Posted July 3, 2014 That V12 would be epic... However $25k for a 75xxxkm ferrari engine requiring a rebuild soonish is a lot.... Quote

d3c0y Posted July 3, 2014 Posted July 3, 2014 That V12 would be epic... However $25k for a 75xxxkm ferrari engine requiring a rebuild soonish is a lot.... I think assuming it needs a rebuild is a bit unfair. It would probably be one of the better serviced sports engines around. Quote
PeterAllen Posted July 3, 2014 Posted July 3, 2014 They are 1/4 that price O/S and not too costly to import. You have to remember the gearbox they use is attached to the diff and the propshaft runs a engine speed. There is a huge cost in engineering a drivetrain. I don't think this discussion is helping Ross... Quote

eddii Posted July 5, 2014 Posted July 5, 2014 $9K for a starting bid on that body kit, are they worth that much?? I would consider buying one if they're around $2K ish Quote
dat2kman Posted July 5, 2014 Posted July 5, 2014 $9K for a starting bid on that body kit, are they worth that much?? I would consider buying one if they're around $2K ish You do not seem to have any idea re costs to produce fibreglass componentry, especially a whole kit, with this degree of complexity in both mouldings and finished pieces. Added to that is raw materials cost, and time to manfacture. Along with the original flops and moulds require to be able to commence manfacture f these kits. AC Cobra replica body shells in glass are easy to produce compared to this kit! Quote
Administrators gav240z Posted July 5, 2014 Administrators Posted July 5, 2014 I guess the alternative is around 30-60 million for the real deal. But no I would pay 9k for this kit because I like the S30z the way it is. But that is just me. Quote
AussieZed Posted July 5, 2014 Author Posted July 5, 2014 Yes I saw the kit and would have gone that way if I still had my 240z shell... that said, I would prefer a car already coverted than see another 2 seater be lost ... Quote
PeterAllen Posted July 6, 2014 Posted July 6, 2014 ... that said, I would prefer a car already coverted than see another 2 seater be lost ... Ross - I think that is one 'car devotee' dilemma, however, I believe a more serious issue is whether a coverted car has had proper rust removal and rust inhibiting carried out. Once the rear body is glued on it would be a major task to treat rust. On the other hand fitting a body is a very major and time consuming task. 'Enzo' might chime in here but I know of two home builders who spent 6-9 months FULL TIME fitting the kit, both are great cars but it does give an indication of what is really involved. So, unless you undertake a very detailed inspection, your real dilemma is, do you risk buying an ill-prepared car or tackle the lengthy process of fitting the kit yourself? If you are up in Sydney anytime drop in and I'll show you my scared hands, wallet and emotions that are the result of having the most desirable car in the world sitting in my shed. Presently working on the intrusion bars and frame for the sliding windows. Quote
eddii Posted July 6, 2014 Posted July 6, 2014 Wow, a whole lot of effort you've put it your car Peter. I admire your patience and perseverance to pursue this mammoth task. Which is where my point comes in, for $9k I would expect the moulds to be top quality and a simple fit. Quote
PeterAllen Posted July 6, 2014 Posted July 6, 2014 My dear chap, you are not paying for functionality, you are paying for 'style'. Quote
AussieZed Posted July 6, 2014 Author Posted July 6, 2014 Thanks Peter, If you are serious I would love to see your car next time I am in Sydney... looks like a work of art. My preference is to buy a known car from within the club because I can trust the underlying work... the last one I bid on had extensive photographic evidence of the project which was reassuring. I do appreciate everyone's advice and comments here and am in communication with two potential sellers, so some options are emerging. Seems like $35K and up gets a quality build.... Cheers R. Quote
eddii Posted July 6, 2014 Posted July 6, 2014 Fair enough, I have a soft spot for Italian cars and bikes I would sell my soul to own one Quote
