Hello,

I have a 77 260z 2 seater. I like the "Fairlady z"  badges but not sure if my car ever wore them. I thinking on the front quarter panels?

Did the 260z wear the "fairlady z" badging?

I'm pretty sure "Fairlady" was the badge used for the Japanese market cars, so unless yours is a JDM import, it would've had 260z badges - doesn't mean you can't put fairlady badges on though...

'Fairlady' & 'Fairlady Z' are Japanese home market badges for various Nissans. They would be on the guards, rear hatch & dashboard. Your car may be a used import ex Japan, so 'Fairlady' is original, or an export model in which case a PO most probably added them in place of the 260Z badges as some people prefer them.

Check the backs of them to see whether they have pins, & do they match with the holes in the panels. Or have the pins been removed & the holes filled in, all by way of a clue.

What does the dashboard badge say?

Also, AFAIK the VIN# differed between home market & export cars. Someone on the forum would be able to comment, & there has been discussion on that topic before.

Export market cars had prefix HS30 for the 240z, although the Fairlady 240zg also had (HS30-H but suffix -H wasn't on the actual VIN stamp as far as I'm aware it was used when the factory referenced the ZG cars).

The RS30 VIN ID refers to the 260z and GRS30 meant 2+2.

On Japanese cars it was generally S30 only (no H in front) for cars similar to our 240z, and later Fairlady Z's were S31 (which had the same revisions and updates - generally speaking as the 260z.

It's all a big more complicated than that, but that's a simplified version.

There are some Japanese market cars floating about in Australia which were originally fitted with the L20 2.0ltr (6 cylinder) engine. However many have had that changed over the years.

The Fairlady Z badge was only used in the Japanese Domestic Market cars.

The 'Fairlady' name was used on the early Nissan sports cars too, SP311's etc.

I suppose to the Japanese all our 240Zs & 260Zs are Fairladies, just not badged that way for export.

As Gav240 says, the home market Zeds generally ran the 2L motor, for road tax reasons as I understand it, which had little commonality if any with the 2.4, 2.6, 2.8 series. As Gav says, probably by now most used imports into Australia & NZ will be running 2.8s by now.

The VIN nos also distinguish between RHD & LHD too.

So check your VIN # (stamped into firewall) & the data plate for starters. And the engine #.

The "Fairlady Z" badge was actually off L20A powered cars. L24 powered cars had a Fairlady 240Z badges on the front quarter. Not sure if L26s were sold in Japan.

L26 power S30 were Badged as Fairlady 260z but were recalled very very quickly (there were only a handful that made it to dealers/showrooms) The L26 did not met local emissions/tax laws or something so all were returned and reworked/repowered with the L20aE and all chassis were altered to S31 (be it GS31 or S31 - I believe there are one of two cars in Japan that have the RS30 with lines through them then the S31 stamped above or over the top)

So no, L26 export only.

Interesting info, i knew i hadn't seen any around lol.

That red Edward Lee car that Alex bought was coded as an RS30 though and it was originally an L20a car.
