DrPersian Posted September 20, 2013 Posted September 20, 2013 Hello. So I want to get a Fairlady, but I don't know which one to get. So can somebody give me some suggestions. So my plans are to do an RB26 (from a R34 GTR) engine swap. Keep the exterior fairly stock but the interior will be redone. So can somebody tell me what the main differences between the 240z and 260z and which is better for holding a turbo and other performance mods. Thanks Quote
Agno Posted September 20, 2013 Posted September 20, 2013 For someone looking to install a high power motor into an S30, 260Zs are probably a better base as they have more chassis bracing than 240Zs did (and weigh approximately 60-80kg more) and they have an R200 diff from factory (bigger diff). 1976-1978 (late model 260Zs) have provisions in the floor for catalytic converters so that might also be something to think about. There are literally hundreds of differences between a 240Z and a 260Z, even just between model years, but for what you want to do those are probably the main differences. Quote
d3c0y Posted September 20, 2013 Posted September 20, 2013 260Zs have more metal in them and are cheaper, so if you aren't set on a 240Z get a 260Z and save yourself some cash. They are essentially the same car. Quote

I think that's only the '77 ? Australia only got a handful of '77 two seaters. If you don't mind the 2+2 shape, they're quite a bit cheaper, and I think they have a wider rear end & are generally a bit beefier. Might actually be better for your application. Quote

acf321 Posted September 20, 2013 Posted September 20, 2013 By all means, if you're looking to wreck a 240Z go for it as that will make the good ones worth more. Alternatively get a 2+2 260Z and chop to your heart's content. Quote

Installing a rb is hardly a drastic modification, you can buy kits to bolt them in and a wiring loom to just plug them into the existing 240 loom. Quote
gilltech Posted September 20, 2013 Posted September 20, 2013 And does the OP realize that there are both 2-seaters and 2+2 seaters in the 260s? Unlike the 240 which is 2-seater only. The 2+2 has a different roof line to accommodate the rear seat, and is a little wider across the back than the 2-seater. Actually the two models are completely different from the windscreen back. The 2+2 cars are far more numerous than the 2-seaters, and can be had a bit cheaper. Quote

It's not like he said he is going to put GTO kit on it or make it into a convertible! I personally have a 240z with a Rb26 in it as well as a 260z two seater with L28. Mechanically I can alway revert the 240z back to L6 at any time at all. Quote

For me it was about bang for buck. My RB cost me around $4000 to install because I did all the work my self. To have an L series with the same power would cost me tens of thousands. My car is insured for $25,000 with the RB in it, so I don't think it has devalued it much at all Quote

Administrators gav240z Posted September 23, 2013 Administrators Posted September 23, 2013 To the original question I've been meaning to update this buyers guide for ages and yesterday I added some reference photos, but I plan to change it's structure quite a bit and improve it further. However it may give you some indication as to the differences. http://datsun-240z-blog.viczcar.com/nissan-datsun-s30-buyers-guide.html Quote
