funkmaster Posted March 12, 2013 Posted March 12, 2013 Hey all, ***more pictures and info on the car will be posted shortly*** Thought i'd finally start up a build thread for my new z. While many of the members here have done the hard yards of restoring and rebuilding their cars from the ground up. I took the shortcut of finding a relatively good condition Z due to a lack of working space and free time (bit of an I.T geek so long hours are the norm ). Before getting to the car, heres a little background as to how i ended up here. During high school, i had made a list of dream cars i wanted to own during my life. I always pledged to myself that as soon as I got a job i would slowly move through the list and hopefully experience each car. It started off with the Nissan Pulsar GTiR. Dont know why i was attracted to the cheese grater bonnet and odd shape but a small car with a SR20DET just sounded like fun. I sold the lancer VRX i had at the time and bit the bullet on a Red 91'. I was quite happy cause little things like the umbrella holder with nissan umbrella (a sought after item in the gti-r community) were in this particular model. I enjoyed a good 5 years and some funny experiences with the car such as snapping the clutch pedal clean off in the first week, having a breakdown on homebush bay drive and causing MASSIVE traffic delays (got a special mention from Vic Russo on the radio lol), fun days through winding roads and advanced driver courses, anniversaries on a flatbed towtruck (one for every year of ownership). Mods wise, it had Whiteline springs, whiteline sway bars, full exhaust, boost controller, Sard FPR, DBA 4000rotors and a jap tuned ecu. The car made 160awkw on 10psi much to the amazement of the gti-r crowd at the time. After 5 years of ownership i decided it was time to move onto the next car on the list... CP9A evo's! i was a huge fan of the WRC and always wanted an evo. The plan was to sell up the gti-r and get a Tommi Makinen edition but with the makinen tax in full swing i decided against it and ended up in an EVO 5. It was Red ... again and was going through compliance, prior to 08 no-one had really thought of importing evo 5's despite having the same model number as evo 6's and being cheaper. So by chance i found this one going through compliance for a workshop in sydney. After a 8 month wait and a licence suspension I finally picked up the car in May and was the first REVS/SEVS complied owner in nsw... for a few months before the floodgates opened lol. Anywho, I had grand plans for this car that never eventuated engine wise due to lack of funds or just life really. It had Tein Monoflex coilovers, Koyorad radiator, Fujitsubo exhaust, cusco braces and work XD9's. It was a great car and always got attention whereever i went but after 4 years of ownership i decided it was time to move onto the next car on the list. Originally I had intended on getting a luxo car/cruiser to try my hand at VIP styling but given my living situation I was able to move onto classic/weekend cars instead. There was something about the character and history of a classic car that appeals to me so i decided to try and hunt one down. There were really only 3 choices in my head at the time. S30z, 510 or E30 bmw. I missed the boat on a clean supercharged 2.7L e30 and clean restored 510. I always thought the s30 would be abit out of my league but i was lucky to stumble across one in melbourne for sale. I spoke with the owner Bob who was a great guy and told me he had owned the car since 03 and used it primarily for track days. The car used to be road registered but went to historic plates when he retired. All the work on the car was done by Daniel @ DJM automotive and in his eyes the car was very straight with minimal rust and is also running the L26 he intended to run on a track car. After speaking with Daniel, I put out a request here for some assistance in checking out the car. Thankfully Mark (ScootaG) was kind enough to pick me up from the airport and head over to see the car. After an inspection over and very fun test drive. I got out of the car with nothing but a big smile on my face, the car went great and handled just as good. My partner knew that i was gonna buy this car the moment she saw me step out of it. I got Marks thoughts and blessing on the car and 30minutes later a deposit was put down and a new chapter in my car life began. I flew down the next week with a friend and picked up the car. Bob took one last look at the car, gave me a folder with 20years worth of receipts and sent me on my way back to sydney. My impressions were WOW, this thing sounds amazing.. it absolutely ate up the Km's and before i knew it i was back in NSW. I had never driven a car with a MPH speedo before I made some foolish mistakes like accidently driving at 160km/h thinking i was only doing 100 :\. apart from the wind noise from windows that didnt close properly and the occasional smell of fumes we were very comfortable and it was an easy drive not to mention i didnt get pulled over once from the police for no plates! I got looks and people giving me thumbs up along the way and its not easy to see why these cars are so desirable. So! after 9hrs of driving, it was safely home and I now begin the process of getting it registered in NSW then the mods and cleanup begin. Im still going through the receipts and history of the car and will post up a more detailed list of mods soon but for now. '73 240z L26 with Triple 40mm dellotros and flattop pistons Nissan 72 cam Matched headers and exhaust Hilux front brakes with cross drilled rotors New sussy bushes Koni shocks and King springs My plans will be new 15" wheels, front spoiler and rear wing, legalis muffler and just fixing the little things wrong with the car. Mechanically I wont make any changes as im very happy with the current set up. More details and pictures soon! that ends my brain fart of a story Quote

funkmaster Posted March 13, 2013 Author Posted March 13, 2013 failed in linking the images, they are up now. spent the last 2 evenings removing all the stickers and decals from the exterior. I was hoping i could salvage the racing numbers so I could send them back to the previous owner but they stretched as i was taking them off . Its lost its racing character but does look alot cleaner without any decals. all done, i spent today getting rego.. i was pulled over by police on my way to the mechanics and was drilled for not having past rego papers and no number plates despite saying that i was on my way to getting a slip (which is perfectly legal in the rta books!). anyways jerkoff policeman gone i got my blueslip without issue woo!. headed to the RTA for number plates then it was back home for some victory dinner \(^.^)/ Quote

Did the cops fine you with your car? I got mine registered 2 weeks ago, getting a blue slip with the sale, i was pulled over too on the way home and hassled for no mirrors, he wasn't impressed when i showed him it just got registered 30 minutes beforehand, but he let me off with a warning, telling me to go home and fix "all the things the RTA should have failed you for" Rudolf. Daniel Moore is meant to be good around Z's so no doubt this 1 has been well sorted and maintained. RE: Fumes, yeah that's 1 reason a Z isn't so much fun. We should really start a thread on here to end all threads around this topic. However rest assured when I drove the 240z to Goulburn in 2005 I think it was, for the Nationals. I did it in my 240z with it's loud exhaust system (registered 112 db at 4200rpm!) and shagged factory seats (no cushion left) and the fumes. It was Melbourne to Canberra and then some more. About 9 hours or so... Man I got out feeling like a train wreck, the Z made it safely and all but I've not been so mentally drained and smelt of fumes so bad in a long time. It's the worst thing about Z car ownership. I hope your girlfriend doesn't mind haha. At least they don't put lead in fuel anymore. Quote

funkmaster Posted March 15, 2013 Author Posted March 15, 2013 Rudolf: nah didnt cop any fines, was told off for driving without plates and constantly told to get the car sorted and registered. his partner was cool though, said he loves the car and wants me to make sure i keep the dash in good condition lol. definitely down for a meet up or cruise! Gareth: yep those are brake ducts, quite funny to see them filled with dead bugs when i drove the car home from melbourne but i'll probably relocate them when i get a new air dam. Dimi: Unfortunately I did, they were all worn out and unreadable anyway. that said, theres some very nice badges in the dash that prove his racing history so i've those. will post some pics of those up. Gav: hahaha, while i llove the smell of petrol 9hrs of fumes does take abit of a toll on ya! im wondering if the fumes are coming through the boot as its not closed or lined up properly (i think the boot latch just needs adjustment). then again it could just be coming from the carbs when i drive with the windows down. The girlfriend is ok with the car so far! when i hit a bump u really feel it but when its an OK road its comfy compared to my evo which had stiff suspension, she'd still prefer her corolla though :\ Drove it last night to run some errands, headlights need adjusting and noticed that the covers are cracked and not lining up/sealing 100%. another little thing on the list to fix up. so i'll get started on that on sunday before F1 starts. highlight of the night: guy pulled up to me at the lights and asked if it was a rotary ahaha. But it's better than the time some 'bell-end' in a taxi asked me if my parents bought me the car. I told him mummy doesn't buy me nice things, this car is built not bought. Quote

Fairlady Z Posted March 16, 2013 Posted March 16, 2013 You can get datsun one from local nissan and fairlady z ones i got both part numbers . Not cheap Cheaper to buy of ebay seller in US nissanofchesapeake. Great seller and almost 50% cheaper with postage than local nissan. If he hasnt got it listed ask and they will get it. No matter if US Aus or jpn model he gets it. Though still cost a small fortune. Depends what ur plan is with the car. If clean stock look with nice wheels and non jdm style front lip than i go for datsun ones so rotarie fans dont get confused. If going for jdm version than fairlady z ones. Datsun one are plastic while fairlady z are metal. For pair of fairlady z u looking at $130 posted datsun ones around $80-100 lol will do ! should i just get these from nissan or is there a good seller on ebay or something ? im tossing up between datsun badges or fairlady z badges Quote
funkmaster Posted March 17, 2013 Author Posted March 17, 2013 ahh thanks! i'll be going with the fairlady ones im not really a hands on guy when it comes to cars but thought i'd do something today. unfortunately it didnt go as planned . first up i tried to adjust the hatch as it was sitting a little higher. first i tried lowering the striker, nope no good so i moved onto the strut and took that off..no dice. then i removed the inner seal (looks like it wasnt stuck on) wasnt that either! that only leaves the outer seal and/or the hatch hinges as the hatch also sat a few mm's out. guess i may bite hte bullet and get a nissan outer/inner seals and get a friend to help me with the hatch hinges. Fail 1. moving on was to adjust the headlights, first thing i noticed is that the headlight covers are wrong and have been dodgy fitted to the car. im not too fussed but its another thing on the list. tried to get in and adjust the lights and guess what ... the screws are rusted and stripped. managed to adjust one side so i guess im 50% there but will have another crack at tackling these when i get off my ass and take off the bumper. Fail 2. didnt even bother with working on the wipers in fear that i'd make it 3 from 3 and F1 was starting so i left the garage disappointed. oh well! Quote

After 11 months of ownership, I've had to make the tough decision of putting my Z up for sale. Due to unforeseen circumstances with my family, I've had to make some sacrifices to help them through this tough period. the latest of them is having to get rid of my dream car. I will put a for sale up post later when I can take some pictures but this really sucks as i've barely driven it due to work commitments and now this, but that's life I guess. I will most definitely buy another Datsun when the time is right. Cheers Quote
