Ksubi Posted April 27, 2010 Posted April 27, 2010 Not sure where to put this but i just wanted to ask if a budget range around 10k would get me a decent 240z with minimal to no rust... or is it best that i save some more cash? Also is it a recommended first car? Cheers guys -ksubi Quote
Moderators Zedman240® Posted April 27, 2010 Moderators Posted April 27, 2010 Welcome...would've been better in the intro section but anyway.. A budget of around 10K will get you one that still needs work. If you can almost double it, that would get you something half decent; like an un finished project with all the hard work done. As a first car I'd be a bit weary..better off with a small 4 cylinder thing like a Toyota. Quote
Ksubi Posted April 27, 2010 Author Posted April 27, 2010 you guys reply nice and quick . ahh fair enoughs, good to know... i guess il have to see how desperate i am later down the line when i have my p's and whether or not i wanna be driving around my mums yaris for a year to save up for a Z . thanks alot for that! [edit] another question... would a 260z generally be cheaper than a 240? Quote
Mr240z Posted April 27, 2010 Posted April 27, 2010 Mate 10k is about the going price for a 240z, I seen a few go for around this price lately. 10k will get you into a fairly decent road regoed example. Quote
Ksubi Posted April 27, 2010 Author Posted April 27, 2010 oh awesome, might be an option to get a decent road regoed one and drive that 1 around for awhile til i have the funds to do fix all the rust :]. really love the Z's but just havent made up my mind whether or not to get 1 for a first car... C.A.R. Posted April 27, 2010 Posted April 27, 2010 A Zed is NOT a suitable car for a P-plater. I know this all too well... Buy something like a 90's model Corolla or Pulsar & learn to drive first... Moved. Quote
Ksubi Posted April 27, 2010 Author Posted April 27, 2010 thanks for the info guys, i guess il just sit and wait then til i can afford 1 for a project car :] Quote
Administrators gav240z Posted April 27, 2010 Administrators Posted April 27, 2010 As much as I hate to shatter your dreams. Lurch is somewhat correct, I had a Z as my first car and it was a great experience but also probably not the most suitable one. If you are a student you will be too broke to fix it. If I was going to do things differently I would have got myself a small economical 4 banger like a Toyota Prius and saved my cash for the "right 240z". As much as I hate to say it as a P-plater you will probably be involved in at least 1 minor accident (hopefully minor). So it's better to learn in a something that isn't a Z. I was in an accident as P-plater myself, although it was not my fault. It still wrote off my 260z 2+2. If it was my 240z I would have been even more devastated. Of course your circumstances may be different to mine and if you want a 240z and your heart is set on it. Do it, enjoy it and have fun. Keep in mind insurance costs also, since insurance companies love to ream us young males for liking cars such as sports cars. Quote
Gyra Posted April 27, 2010 Posted April 27, 2010 I agree - a 240 would be an awesome first car, but the repairs and upkeep would soon kill the enthusiasm! You might want to consider another datto - maybe a 180B SSS. Still a cool car, and similar tech to a 240Z so you can skill up while you save up... Hmm, come to think of it, I wouldn't mind adding a SSS to my collection... Cheers! G Quote
Whittie Posted April 27, 2010 Posted April 27, 2010 A Zed is NOT a suitable car for a P-plater. I disagree. I think it's what you make of it. I bought my Zed when I was 14 and the first time I drove it was on a racetrack. Was it a good first car? Who knows. I did end up buying another shiverter 4-banger to get around in cause it was off the road so often though. Was the experience anything short of extraordinary? You bet it wasn't. If I had my time and money would I do it again? Definitly! Just be aware of what you are buying in to before you get one. 10k will NOT buy a decent zed for a daily. It WILL need work and it WILL have rust. Is the pain worth the fun/fury/aggrevation/elation of the build? That's up to you. I've been building my car for 6 and a half years now and it's had its share of down sides. My dad was a mechanic in another life and without his mechanical and, at times, financial assistance the zed would be long gone and I'd be in something like a skyline for sure. I'll say to you what I say to my friends: Newer cars are easier. That doesn't mean you can't have fun with an old car but they are not easy/cheap, I could have bought a KILLER R34 GTR for what I've spent on my car now, but I would still take the zed anyday. Just my 2c Quote
MaygZ Posted April 28, 2010 Posted April 28, 2010 Welcome aboard. Just because I had to wait until I was 44 to get my first Zed, doesn't mean you have to. I agree with the other sticks in the mud though. My first car was a Mazda 1500 (a well ahead of it's time Italian designed sports sedan). It was a great car that I seemed to touch park occasionally enough, that had it been a hand restored Zed I would still be crying. My brother's first car was a '59 MGA that had bits stolen from it on a regular basis and the only way he could stop the thefts was to right it off on a valiant! My advice would be, as already suggested, to find a relatively cheap car (RWD of course) to endure all those little mishaps that follow young drivers around (including Police!!). So long as you can keep that other great expense (girls) out of your life (wallet) for a while, then you would be better off to drive a Zed in your 20's. None of this stops you from starting a project sooner (parents tend to get in the way of this plan), but not ideal as a daily drive. In the meantime, your skills and knowledge will grow from the many very experienced members on this forum. Once you get to know a few of the blokes near to you, then you may be able to hone your skills working on their cars (obviously under the eagles eyes of the owners). This is just my opinion. Good luck and welcome again. MaygZ Quote
zzzzed Posted April 28, 2010 Posted April 28, 2010 good idea! buy a zed as a shed ornament project, and in the mean time buy a cheap runabout to cut your teeth on. By the time the zed is on the road you will be off your p plates and be much more experienced on the road Quote
Ksubi Posted April 28, 2010 Author Posted April 28, 2010 Haha thanks for the advice everyone. I think I'll just hold it out for awhile... no room in the garage anyway because of my brothers car and motorbikes. I guess il start putting away some money now so il be able to get a project car next year, the sooner the better . Also the garage will be empty too! Til then I'll quietly sit in the back ground of the forums and do more research about the Z's. -ksubi Quote
Hunter Posted April 28, 2010 Posted April 28, 2010 I think for me to comprehensively insure my 260Z 2+2 way back then was $2500 per year. And yes I did damage the side of my car when a telegraph pole had an argument with my car while I was drunk. Fixable but I was devo, I still have the car. Quote
