will your setup be adjustable i.e be able to vary the amount of assistance? any idea of cost?

not sure if this has been covered before. has anyone looked at or possibly fitted this electric power steering developed for the Z's from http://zpowersteering.com/

I've been looking at getting a good allrounder. The place I went to are big on UNIMIG and recommended the Razorweld DC MIG/MMA inverter for $779 or if I wanted Tig as well the Razorweld 205 MTS-MIG-TIG-MMA inverter for $1165. The Lincoln Powerweld 180C MIG only was around $1200. Best to shop around.

Wow this whole project blows my mind. People go on about skills and trades disappearing, then you see the skill and workmanship on this project and your faith is restored. It gives you a good feeling.

was this an ebay purchase or one you had restored?

rear spoiler was from Japan. I found it at SSS Automotive. The spoiler had bold protruding writing on the back EVA DATSUN 280ZX. I got rid of that, re-glassed it and had it painted. I sold the car to Carlos at Sportsclassic in 2002. He turned it into a rally car and eventually sold it. Well I'm assuming he did. He took a mould of the rear spoiler and now sells them. This is what the car last looked like. No idea who bought it or where it went and some shots in action

it's been 13 years since I sold this car, but I thought might be of interest to some. Was going through stuff the other day and found some pics. As purchased with saggy suspension, Hoshiro racing wheels 14x8.5 & 14x9.5 if I remember correctly. Only mod was a 2.5" exhaust and a fantastic sounding twin pipe TRUST muffler. looked better after the suspension was done at which time it was discovered the front left rail was bent. The rail was straightened, crossmember and control arm replaced, body alignment checked. Suspension was Tokico Illuminas strutsall round with heavier King springs. Heavy duty adjustable castor rods from Stewart Wilkings, standard swaybars. Bushes replaced with urethane from Noltec. front wheel is sitting in the right spot now. After a couple of years it was time for more power. Engine was rebuilt with new pistons and rings, all new bearings, bottom end balanced, head was rebuilt and some minor headwork done, Crow cam and double valve springs, HM headers, 2.5: exhaust with straight thru muffler, noisy and droned like hell. AU XR6 Falcon 65mm throttlebody, EMS ECU, larger injectors. Gearbox reco'd and heavier clutch put in. The standard 3.7 R200 open wheeler was replaced with a 3.9 LSD. I had the box and diff mounts redone in urethane by Noltec. then we went to coilpack ignition, again from a AU XR6 Falcon. The dizzy was ditched and replaced with a Series 5 RX7 module which has the crank angle sensor. Minor machining was required to make it fit. A rear spolier which I found at SSS Automotive was added and the wheels replaced with Performance Superlites 15x7 all round. They had only recently been released and 7 inch was the widest available. 16's were some years away. almost forgot. interior was tidied up. seats were reupholstered and bolstered significantly and were an excellent seat. Old stereo was ditched for a new headunit, power amp, pair of Jaycar 6x9's behind the seats and a pair of 6 inch (I think) at the front on an under dash panel on each side. Sparco steering wheel and the list goes on

yeah I know you can't always get what you want. That's the problem. I suppose the real point was that 1.5 - 2 years ago I could have got what I wanted for $15k now I'd need $30k. If I only I had a crystal ball. I've seen 2+2's in the flesh and they have no appeal to me, in any series. S1 to S3 RX-7's probably not a bad option. Great little car.

this bubble has pretty much made me give up on owning a 240Z. I've wanted one for several years but only in the last year and a half (since I bought my current house) have I seriously been looking because I finally found a house with a big double garage out the back and a double carport etc etc. Perfect for working on cars. But the house cost a fair bit more than anticipated plus I needed to spend some $$ on it and thus there were less dollars for a toy. Unfortunately in the last year and a half the popularity of the 240 has gone crazy as have the prices. If you do have a good one, like all other classics, it's safer to keep it locked up in the garage which is not what I want. I wanted one with a decent body, relatively rust free as I didn't want to spend thousands on rust repairs and I don't have the skill, patience or time to do that sort of work. I wanted to focus on the mechanicals. Engine with triples, good suspension and brakes, wheels. Just a nicely modified period looking car. I recently almost had a 260 2 seater, but just as it was all but mine, the owner for a reason that still baffles me sold it right from under me, when in principle we'd had a deal. My first Z was a 280ZX 2 seater which I had from 1996 to 2002. I've naively thought about trying to find one of these, but they are as rare as rocking horse sh*t here and they are getting pricey in Japan and the USA. Z31 300ZX might be the go. They're still affordable and the prices can only go up

Mine was a '79 JDM and had power recirculating ball. Was excellent, 2.7 turns lock to lock, just the right weighting and feel. Carlos did say the 2 seater was better than the 2+2 as a rally car.Lighter and more nimble and...........better than a 240/260Z!!!! Wheelbase is about the same, but the 280ZX had a wider track making it more stable and a much easier car to drive, plus the power steer helped.

if you're talking about that Orange/Red 280ZX 2 seater he had for sale, that was my car until I sold it to him in 2002. It was originally white. I bought it in 1995. Carlos had been rallying a 2+2 for a while until it was damaged in a crash. He'd been after a 2 seater hardtop for a while but couldn't find one. He had one or two left hand drive targa tops but they were no good for rallying and gladly bought mine when it came up. It was a great car, I miss it badly but by 2002 reluctantly I could see having a well modified zed as a daily driver was getting expensive. In stock form I'd get about 15 litres/100km around town. In 98 the engine was rebuilt with big cam, head work, AU XR6 65mm throttlebody, AU XR6 coilpacks. EMS ECU, larger injectors etc etc it produced about 240bhp and never missed a beat in about 3 years as a daily driver and returned about 16-17 litres/100km so it was getting too expensive. Unfortunately I couldn't afford nor had the room to keep 2 cars, so it went. Carlos did much work to turn it into a rally car, but the engine only had minor changes. A Haltech ECU and a different cam. I believe he only did one or two rallies in it before putting it up for sale. I never really understood why he wanted to rally one seeing that his stable was full of more modern AWD turbos. Sorry to hijack the thread!!
