DreamZproject's 260z ever ongoing project
thriller replied to DreamZproject's topic in Members Project(s) Journal
Angle grinder + a 4" 'strip disc' attachment for about $12. Way less mess, way more fun! Jealous about the condition of your car... -
But by the same token, the car was such a clean example that to let it get split to pieces based on (almost) nothing more than emotion would be a sadder end, having the spare parts being sold off to fix some kids thrash-sled? It was only given a good bashing for probably an hour or two and if they were trying to write it off they did a pretty bad job. Seats weren't even slashed up or anything?! Seems like rotaries love a solid limiter bash anyway. I say fix it. Even then if, in the end, you just don't feel the same about it, you can import it here or something and I daresay make a tidy enough profit? You seemed to have put a good bit of care into this car, so if anything, it deserves all of your love and attention to bring it back to where it was. You can't just abandon a loved one because they've been mistreated by someone else.

I assume this is about photography? My latest: Average quality is thanks to facebook compression :-\ Really cool photo BTW. If you leave the exposure on for a really really long time, you get those cool 'stars' coming out of the lights, I think that would have added something nice.
-
Wisdom. I really hope to see that becomes a reality for you
-
Wish I could find a shell that easily...
-
Looks brilliant man, hope to see it in the flesh some day.

Done the dry ice method in a friends AE86, few things to say in my learning process haha: It's fairly simple. Rather than spread your 3kg of ice over the entire car, dump it ALL in one spot. Once you hear some cracks, scoop it all up and move it to the next part. DO NOT hammer the fuck out of it. Use a chisel or a large screwdriver+hammer. you WILL put hundreds of tiny dents in if you decide to get hammer happy. Do it as though you're prying and lifting the deadener off, don't just smack it head on. Can get it from welding supply places (BOC or whatever). Car looks good too

-10 seconds to go -type in 800 -hit bid -login screen comes up :'( Such a rookie mistake haha. I was logged in, but only that weird sort of half-login state that ebay does. Devastated. More fish in the sea...
-
Chugging away haha. Seen a shell on eBay, if luck is on my side I'll win the bid for not too much... Been collecting parts anyway, few things in the mail now too which I'll get looking good soon.

Cars For Sale (3rd Party Sites) Ebay, Carsales etc..
thriller replied to gav240z's topic in Cars For Sale
Yep. I have most series 1 parts around the place anyway, makes more sense to do that. Going to have a look Sunday. -
Nooo you sold the mesh one! I'll try hold out a bit, thank you though. I will need at least that upper thermostat housing, I'll pull my thermo out and test it to see if I'll need that too. Depends if you want to split the thermo stuff up though. EDIT: Just popped my upper thermo housing off to find.... nothing. So I'll need thermostat too. Might as well go the whole lot haha. Honestly though $150 seems a little high considering the price of all the parts on eBay.

Cars For Sale (3rd Party Sites) Ebay, Carsales etc..

Going to have a look at this. In two minds though, should I cut this shell up and use pieces on my matching numbers #1001 or sacrifice my shell for this? Or do I end up with more Z's than brains? Regardless, will post up how it looks. -
Perfect! Shoot me a PM with price you're after and a picture link if that's easy enough to do. Thanks

Figured I might start one of these for the car, no doubt there'll be heaps of things and rather than make 30 threads I'll just stick it all in one. In Adelaide. INTERIOR: Headunit. Something of suitable vintage or original, don't care too much. If it doesn't work thats alright, long as it looks good. Driver's side door card. Seat belts shift knob steering wheel 2 seater hatch interior trim 1x window crank door-pull strap things Black leather(ette?) seats Shift boot headliner handbrake boot RUNNING GEAR: Triple carbs. Mikuni/weber/dont mind. To suit L24 lightweight flywheel + clutch BODY/MISC: Center and left valence panels Front indicators (clear) Tail light gaskets Dog leg panels floor pans BRE style lip ducktail Driver side door skin Those funny sensor things that sit in the door frames. I'm a poor 18 year old, so I won't be able to buy everything at once, only in installments. Lemme know what you've got! Thanks.

Need this too. Dunno what possessed me to throw mine out... Possible to upload a tracing of one or something?

At a bit of a standstill regarding the body. Since we've only got a carport, it makes sense that the body will get some slight surface rust underneath the primer layer by the time the bodywork is finished... Which makes me want to wait until I can store in a nice dry garage. On the up side of that though; I have an entire interior to get looking pristine again, as well as an engine to rebuild. And Equip 01's to save for. So I won't be too short on things to do. And I guess that means once the body is done and painted I'll be able to throw all this nice minty fresh interior and engine stuff into her rather than have an awesome looking body and have a ratty as hell interior for however long it all takes. So. Dashboard before: Those cracks reach the whole way through the foam! Some expanding foam sprayed in there: Now its time for a few sheets of fiberglass and texture paint yes? As per that dash resto guide somewhere on these forums.

From a photography point of view, ease up on the vignetting a little bit. And if you edit the colors/tone/anything, make it match the scene. For example I would have tried to make it look a bit whiter and cleaner rather than grey. Could probably mask out the car and increase the contrast on the background a bit. And the first photo would be about 5x better if you could have pushed the trolleys just out of frame too. And the back of the car looks a bit under-exposed, but you can't do much about that unless you bring along some ghetto lighting gear. Sorry if it sounds a bit harsh, but you never strive to get better if everyone says your photos are amazing yeah? That said they really are quite good, I'm just being a bit picky . I think a horrible dingy alleyway full of rubbish would be a cool spot for you to shoot, just leave the camera on a tripod with long exposure, bring a diffused torch and 'paint' the light onto those Z hips we all love. And yeah, car looks good

Should have mentioned I'm in Adelaide. I thought that was in my avatar a while ago, must have changed. Yeah absolutely, I think this could be really the most important part of the build. Leave any surface stuff behind here and I'll be in tears if any bubbles form under paint a few years after I'm done. Heard sand can be a little dodgy around areas like the quarter-panels if they rush the job? But on the upside, it doesn't leave behind any weird residue like soda does right? I'm completely ignoring the panels right now, not going to even think about them till the shell is structurally sound. The only things left now are 6 bolts on the interior that need to be drilled out (sun visor and super-secret-storage hatches), and the sound deadener. Speaking of which; anyone know where to get it cheap in S.A.?
-
Alrighty team. Pretty well ready to get blasting! Only end up having a few hours a week to work on her which is a bit sad, but I'm in no hurry. Blaster details anyone? Suggestions on soda vs sand vs media vs anything else? Will they be happy to work on an only-just-rolling shell? I'd rather not drag it around on rails since I don't think it'll quite be strong enough for that haha. Even if they skip the stuff around struts and mounting points since I can hit them with a strip disc later, without too much hassle. Can they generally prime the car too for me or should I get cracking and buy my own gear which I'll inevitably end up needing later anyway?
-
Thanks! Ideally, I'd like to have been a bit further by now, but between comp science at uni, a measly 18 hours a week at woolworths, my silvia and 10 hours a week commuting; I'm happy enough with how things are. Oh yes, I was way careful. Had the engine about an inch above the mounts and gave it a beating, just to make sure its sturdy enough that it wouldn't snap sitting above the rad support. That'd be a quick end to this project haha. Think the stands are really sturdy too. Bit of wood on top of each one to distribute the weight a bit better so I won't end up with a dent. Feels rock solid, I don't think anything short of an earthquake would push the car off.
-
Loom out: Got my roof: Here's the underside: Back end of the roof panel sits maybe .5cm above where it should be, but that's the least of my worries. Very happy with it, makes me feel a bit better about the whole thing haha. Just need to pull the brake lines off, and swaybars etc etc.
-
I don't think you'll ever be able to strip those intricate nooks and crannies on the inside of the car. Take off the hanging panels, strip them with a sander yourself and send the shell off to a blast. At least, that's what I'm doing.
-
Engine out. Unfortunately, the sun visor bolts have been stripped completely. Going to have to get the drill out again for them
-
Last time I did that, the head of the bolt snapped off... Was holding the pressure plate-flywheel as well. Not a cheap mistake, that one hahah.
-
Thanks for those tips guys, going to come in handy. Pulled the windscreen out the other day fairly hassle free, tiny crack in the top corner from me being too impatient, followed by hundreds of curse words at my own stupidity. Just set up the engine crane and everything before I have to run along to work, going to do the pull tomorrow. Quick question: Are those lifting eyes on the engine strong enough to pull out the engine, tranny, manifolds, headers all in one? The single bolt holding the eye to the engine looks dismally small....
