The Brown Hornet - as NEW 1971 240Z - SOLD

Took these photos today.... It actually looks pretty brutal under the bonnet, should be good for a fast run on Sunday mornings, not to mention humiliate a few of the local Boxster owners. Only a few weeks off and it'll be a driver! Adam. -
Hi Folks As the header says, I'm looking for some R200 4.3, 4.6 or higher (if made) crown and pinion wheels. This if for a mate that is offshore, but I am on the hunt on his behalf. PM me if you have, or know a source for these parts. Many thanks. Adam.

Cost to get the headers coated inside and out was $350. As per the balance of the system, I will not worry about coating that as the bulk of the work is done in the header. Having said that, Nat had a triumph Stag show car that has a fully coated system front to back. Suspect you can add another few hundred $ for that. -
I can second Peter Mac.. I spent a year looking looking for extractors. Spoke to US NISMO and they are a 3 month wait at best, with no guarantees. Its like they are not interested in doing business, really! I bought the SWR bespoke kit and its a very welll made thing in the right design you are after. Have a look at the photos on my Brown Hornet thread, which are pretty detailed. Go with the locally made stuff, its very good.

Thank God lads, between your comments and Nat's i'm certain everything will be OK.. One question I did ask was if we can still fit a heat shield under the carbs. Nat was not certain on this, but did suggest we will be able to make it work somehow, I'll go with that! Can report a mate with a Lotus 7 told me that the ceramic coating on his extractors made a massive difference to in-car temperatures after he had the coating added. Told me that the C-coating was a no-brainer to performance and in car temps and that it'd make a huge difference, for what it's worth! Cheers -

Hello Folks briefly had five to call Nat today and enquire about the extractors. The good news is he has put them on, and the less exciting part of this was that he needed; 1) a hammer, and 2) a file to make them fit !!!! Hhhmm I thought to myself, before thinking hmmm again. Nat is a complete fanatic, so I gently asked if he'd cracked any of the ceramic coating off, the answer of which was 'no'. Apparently the issue was that there was literally no room between the inlet and the extractor, such that he had to 'very very modestly flatten the top of the extractor, and file the underside of the inlet manifold'. He told me not to worry, and that often this kind of fine tuning is necessary to get a proper fit. I guess this is right, although not having tried this I cannot comment from experience. He assures me that the set up is excellent, and there is very little to be worried about. I do trust Nat, so I am hoping to pop out Sat morning early to have a look and grab a few photos. I'd say it'll be going to the exhaust shop in December, so that should be the start date! More to follow. -

Another brief update. Dropped the pipes off to Nat at the weekend who told me he'll stick them on in the next week or so and then we'll fuel here up and add a spark! Will be taking the car to Liverpool exhausts at some point to have the balance of the system finished off also. In case you missed this earlier in the thread, i'm going 2.5" mandrel bent stainless with mid resonator and rear sports muffler. Interested in any thoughts on what mufflers are good these days. Told Nat NOT to do this before I am armed and ready with the video camera, for you long suffering Hornet fans. Should be an update in a week or two. -
Onya John, That car is going o be insane ... gotta get it over to the Nurburgring to do some high speed testing! Remind me of the power and weight of that motor again? Adam.

Hi As the header says, i'm looking for a set of 15X7 Panasports in zero offset for my 240Z. If you have a set, or know of any lying about not being used, please PM me. Rgds Adam.
-
OK, for those of you that might be considering a set of Panasports, I have found the only local supplier (as far as I can tell anyway). Name is Steve, and he is located in Nowra. Number is 4422 1364. Steve suggested the 15*7 is 'about' $300 a rim in plain silver finish and stock is about four weeks off arriving in Australia. Adam.
-
just stumbled over this one too ... footage gets excellent from 1;38 and after 4;00.
-
I better stop with advise there mate ... obsessiveness becomes exxy! Your car is worth it though, and as Pete and Whittie can attest, the ceramic coating means a lifetime out of those great headers. Keep up the good work mate. Adam. ps. do you need a good plastic chroming shop for all your vents and garnish?? (ha ha ha!!)

this fresh from Central Denmark! Car is described as a 2.4L 240Z with ~200hp. Wow it sounds fantastic, despite causing slight nausea to watch!

As promised, another update on the Hornet. Popped out to Stewart Wilkins this morning to collect my extractor kit which I had asked to be coated in white ceramic. The good news is the extractors look superb, as Peter Mc had suggested, with all welds, bends and collector junctions finished to a very high standard. The coating is more a powder finish, which I suspect in time will be more grey but to me this is the better choice than a chrome look. I spoke to Stuart about suspension, and he confirmed that the koni yellows are a fantastic choice that they use all the time to great effect. He suggested adding a coilover threaded part to the standard leg, so we could infinitely vary ride height, spring rate, and strut stiffness. I'll get round to this once the Hornet is on the road, but as a minimum, I'll get koni yellow's installed, like Andrew and Chris240 have done. I also took out my Mk63's to ask about refurbishment. We will remove the pistons (i have two sets) and have them machined and then re-chromed to make them as new. Stu will also blast the calipers and set them up properly. I'll have Nat spray them in hi-temp paint, or if I can, I'll find the OEM paint finish and colour and have them done that way. If anybody knows the colour or correct factory Mk63 finish, i'd love to hear how they were done. Anyway, here are some pics of the extractors. I think they'll be great. -
Hi Pete, Sent a PM, but like the others, tell me how much, where and when to send my money. I'd love to buy a set for the Hornet. Regards Adam. The Brown Hornet.

.. my first 1971 240Z is actually in Sydney. Was bought by a bloke called Joe in about 98 and he's been working on it since. I only onwed the car for about 12 weeks (long story here), but he recently told me it had a 260Z rear end, 280Z box, vented bonnet and some rust when I sold it to him. It is a 71 model, like my current car, and when I had it, it was great. I remember hitting 95 MPH on the M2 motorway one night going to pick up my girlfriend thinking how quick it was for a 71 car. Aside from the driveline changes, it was a standard L24 with an extractor kit on it. I'm planning on meeting up with Joe when the Hornet's done to compare notes. That car was great, it was painted an old english white and had the jelly bean wheels. Very memorable.

Ok, went back to have a look at the Hornet today and did not have the heart to lift the sheet... nothing has happened in a while! However, I did call SWR to order my custom extractor kit that i've decided to have ceramic coated as opposed to a more simple paint finish. The theory goes that not only does the ceramic coating inside and out protect the metal from oxidization literally forever, but conceals the heat of the exhaust gasses inside the extractor, so as to; 1) improve the scavenging effect of the extractor, and 2) minimise heat soak into the surrounding engine, car and importantly carbs. Whilst the usual silver coating is normally preferred, I actually chose white to replicate the look of the aluminium oxide coated extractors of the 60's and 70's formula one cars. Here is the inspiration for my white ceramic coated pipes, which I should be collecting next weekend. Hope you like! -
Hi Lads, thanks so much for your well wishes, really appreciated especially since I've never even met you blokes (yet!). Ok, So we called our only Son, Nicholas Charles Fairfax. He's come in at a somewhat modest 3.09kg, or 6.8pd in the old method. Elise, I and the Girls, Alexandra & Lucie are over the moon and to be honest the only worry in my life now is trying to work out; 1) how I'm ever get a minute to get out and drive the hornet, but 2) which one of the other four will I be able to take for a spin? Oh, I have given a lot of thought about how i'm going to fund it all too! Its a total blast getting a Son guys .. thanks again for your interest and wishes. Here he is at 2hrs old ! Cheers

Yeah, it has been too long, had a Son yesterday, my first boy taking to three the tally now!! Have been working away in the background on the hornet. Am in the process of ordering the koni yellow shocks, but there seems to be a dozen options on this so I'm actually yet to finalise this. Received my early rear hatch glass from the US with vertical defroster and it looks fantastic (I now have one for sale). I now have the complete interior kit, mk63's, oem headlight protectors and a bunch of other bits including the 'performance' door to body seals. I am planning on picking up the extractor kit nxt week, so once this is done I'll post a few shots of that. Reading the Octane article really made me want to get this thing done, they really rated the 240z in stock form. Will post more in the coming week or so -
