That sounds pretty good considering how heavy those Supras are! What sort of times did that awesome looking 350Z do? My best is 1:03.07. Hoping to have a brake upgrade done by the next meeting there which should get me into the 1:02s or maybe even the 1:01s.

Yeah, it's a bit of a drag strip hey! Another guy that races a Z down here used to do around 1:09-1:10 with a lightly modified L26 in his 240Z. Considering semi slicks are generally worth about 3 seconds compared to road tyres I'd say your were going quite well for your first time on the track It sure is a killer on brakes. It's supposed to be the hardest track on brakes in the V8 Supercar series! I run RX7 4 spots on Honda Legend ventillated rotors on the front and R31 discs and callipers on the rear and they're nowhere near up to the job. They start to fade after about 3 hard laps..........no good when our shortest races are 5 laps

Glad to hear you all enjoyed the trip to tas and made it back in one piece What did you guys think of Symmons Plains? I find it a bit boring after Baskerville but it is fun going over the start/finish line and getting all loose over the right hand crest into the tight left What roads did you like the most? I'll look forward to seeing some of the videos posted up.

Nice Z!!! Have you had it on a weigh bridge? Should have awesome acceleration with all that weight reduction and a stroker Do you think the bracing to the front wheel arches has made much difference? I saw the same thing in a BRE book and though it looked like a good idea to stiffen up the soft nose of the Z.

I agree with gav, it's great to know things have been done the way you wanted them done. back to the 911 discussion, I love datsuns and have only owned one non nissan/datsun car which I got sick of after a few months and sold. However I was very impressed when a mate brought his completely standard 1982 911 SC to Baskverville for a play one day and did high 1:05 lap times on crappy street tyres. The guys who have been to baskerville on the targa tour will know that this is not messing about! As much as I love my Z's there is no way that one would do those lap times bog standard.

Paid $6,500 for the car with the engine conversion, brakes, suspension already done. Since then I've spent about $5,000. This included bodywork and a respray, a new engine with forged pistons and P90 head, a CAMS approved cage and lots of other little bits and pieces to make the change from a club car to a proper race car. Could have easily been $20K without help from friends/family/sponsors. Figure I'll need to spend about another $10K to get the car how I would like it but for now I'm happy to be able to race as it is

I've busted 2 now running a 174rwkw L28 turbo but it's used for racing so it cops a fair bit of stress. If you look after it then I think a standard box would do the job for street use with the power range you're talking about.

I'm in Victoria for that weekend and I can't get the day of work to come watch you guys at Symmons either so it looks like I won't be able to meet up with guys on the tour Hope yas have heaps of fun and enjoy our lovely roads Mick, if you organise a meeting then let me know the details and I'll try to pass them onto a couple of other Z owners who aren't members of this forum. Unfortunatly anything in the first half of this year will probably rule me out cause I'm snowed under at work at the moment If you're ever at the racing at Baskerville or Symmons Plains then make sure you come down to the pits and introduce yourself. I did the full series in Targa B last year and will be doing the same again this year. There is another guy (also called Mick) that runs a Yellow 240Z with an N/A L28 in Targa C. Cheers Shane

Yep, Shannons offered to insure mine as a race car for fire & theft only.

Hi Mick Just thought I'd say hi as I'm probably the only other Tassie member on this forum?? I'd be up for a meeting some time in the future if we can find some other keen Z owners in the state. Only problem is my Z isn't registered :-\
-
No probs, I'll come introduce myself if I do make it up for a look.
-
I'm in Victoria on the 8th & 9th to pit crew for a mate at the Victorian Karting State Titles at Geelong! That's just plain ironic I'll definately come up to Symmons if I can get the day off though.
-
I'll second that. Does anybody know what date the targa tour guys will be at Baskerville? And are locals welcome to come along for a play? I'm keen if my gearbox is fixed. If not then I'd still like to head out there for a look.

You might these links useful: http://datsunownerstas.proboards79.com/index.cgi?board=memcars1&action=display&thread=1147259931 http://ozdat.com/forum/viewtopic.php?t=6303 The first link is my car (a fair bit has changed on the car since I put this information up) and the second link is to the car of another member of this forum who is much more knowledgable than myself. First you need to find out what is in the engine you have. Sounds like it's a fairly hot N/A engine which will mean high compression which won't suit a turbo. You might be better off selling this engine and buying a complete L28ET from the US. A standard L28 runs 8.3:1 compression and an L28 turbo runs 7.6:1 compression. My old engine ran 8.1:1 compression by shaving the tops off the pistons of a standard L28 engine and happily ran 10psi boost. My new engine runs around 8.5:1 compression from flat top forged pistons and a P90 head (which is the L28 turbo head). This also runs 10psi boost but would happily cope with more. What computer you run will depend on what you want to do with the car. If you think you will want to chase big power in the future then I suggest going for aftermarket engine management from the start. If not then the standard L28ET computer will probably do the job. Personally I'd go for aftermarket engine management from the start if you can afford it. As far as the drivetrain goes the standard diffs are quite strong. I'm running a welded R180 (standard diff) which has gave no trouble so far. There is also the option of upgrading to an R200 diff. Would will be able to find plenty of info on this upgrade by searching this site. Whether you need to upgrade the gearbox will depend on power level you're looking for and what the car will be used for. If you intend on using the car for the street and will not being chasing massive power then the standard gearbox should do fine. I have now busted 2 gearboxes and am looking to upgrade but my car is used for racing. This link is from where I have been chasing up info for the gearbox upgrade: http://ozdat.com/forum/viewtopic.php?t=11723 And this is a tutorial on what The Helix has done in his Z http://ozdat.com/forum/viewtopic.php?t=6393 Another problem my car has had is snapping the uni joints in the rear drive shafts. I've fixed it by installing stonger uni joints but most people do a CV joint shaft conversion. To find the compression ratio of your engine you will need to know the bore and stroke of the engine, if the pistons are dish or flat tops and the capacity of the head. If you can find this info then we will be able to work it out for you. The stroke should be standard (79mm I think from memory??) so you don't need to find this. I'm not sure of the difference in ease and cost between an RB20 and L28ET conversion. I can tell you though that the L28ET will produce more torque from low revs because of the extra capacity. Both engines will produce similar peak power figures with similar modifications. I think that's all I have to say for now sorry for the novel!

Know anybody with a busted gearbox out of a Zed, Skyline, VL Commodore, 240K, 200B, 180B, 1600, Stanza, etc, etc? The input shaft will do fine. Or you could just ask Santa to bring you one

This is the expensive way to go but I run BP6 iridium plugs. If I run normal plugs then I need a new set pretty much every race meeting. The iridium plugs last me at least a year and I've found the engine to be a little more responsive off boost.
-
That's a real good price. Gotta be happy with that
-
I'm with Toecutter. Replace that wing with a BRE style one & it's absolute porn!
-
Somebody else was telling me about this, sounds like heaps of fun. Do you know what time of year it is?
-
Yeah, mine has a full cage, that made a HUGE difference. I guess strut braces would make more difference with no cage. I still expected the front brace to make a reasonable difference since the cage only goes as far forward as the dash and there's no other bracing in the front of the car. Was kinda disapointed when it didn't do much.
-
I run 15 x 7 superlites under standard guards and they fit easy but I'm not sure what offset they are. From the clearances on my car I think 15 x 8's would fit if you got the offset perfect.
-
I can't really feel any difference whether mine is on or off. It does seem to make a marginal difference to my laps times though. Maybe 1-2 tenths of a second over a 1 minute lap.

Club sprints and hill climbs are the best ways to get a taste of motorsport. The CAMS license required is cheap and entry and running costs are relatively low unless you bend/break something. Kart racing is also a great way to get into motorsport as George pointed out but doesn't involve racing your Z Proper circuit racing can get very expensive very quickly. Myself and my dad do all the work on my car and I have many sponsors/friends that get me bits and pieces at cheap prices. It still costs me around $1K to do each race meeting.............If nothing goes wrong.
-
I agree, if it'll pass rego then leave it in there. Great way of stiffening up the big engine bay in the Z.

I had to do the same thing for my helmet to clear the roof Without a helmet there's heaps of room though. My brother who is 6 foot 6 fitted in the car easily and that was before I lowered the seat.
