The standard balancer is not very good. The rubber in them deteriorates and causes harmonic vibrations that could destory your crank bearings. You can rebuild them, but its my understanding that the cost of refurbishing them means that you may as well upgrade to something more durable. Len could you please post prices with parts you're advertising? Thanks
-
Good to see you offer such parts Len. Hope to see your old girl back on the road and track soon.

Fair enough, I stand corrected then. I guess the problem with the information on the internets at the moment is that its heavily biased toward the US market. So it can be hard to tell what was going on in each country. Unfortunately while Brian Long's book is well detailed their is only very brief mentions of the Australian market. Certainly there is a bias even in his book toward talking about the US market and what was going on there. Although due to sales in that region its hard to ignore. @Gold - I think a lot of people stick with the L28 because it is a very flexible motor and can be made to perform very well with the right mods. The expense of engine conversion ads up very quickly so it depends on what you want to achieve from the car.

Yeah he does have a slight chip on his shoulder. Although I think alot of it is tongue in cheek and probably doesn't want tyre kickers. Any idea what WALTER'S are? I'm sure its a funny acronym for something. Haha, yep couldn't agree more. Its functional but ugly, well I've certainly seen worse but the wheels and paint colour are not my cup of tea. If that makes me a restorer or concourse loonie so be it. Don't know why he hates restorers so much, he'd rather scrap it than let someone else take it on and restore? I don't get that logic but oh well. It looks like its an auto also? Have to say I would hate that (he must be old as stated). Overall a good buy for someone looking to build a similar car. If you wanted you could give it a decent paint job and fix up the interior would clean up nicely but by the time you were finished you'd be at 30K. -
I know what you're saying, but Australian models were still fitted with different carbs (HMB46W) Hitachi SU's. As part of the assembly more emission related parts were fitted to the vehicle. Its also my understanding that the E88 cylinder head chamber changed to a lower compression design (to allow for unleaded fuel). They did fit this cylinder head with larger valves which helped along with stroking it. According to Brian Long's book the L26 was rated at 162HP Gross SAE power. It was 139HP in California where even stricter emission regulations existed. You are correct that the weight rose mainly due to the US 5mph bumpers. Apparently they were responsible for about 60kg of extra weight (on US models). However other markets did receive a weight increase due to the Aircon, Ventilation system and other minor changes. The 74 260z chassis was very similar, if not the same as the 73 240z chassis (albeit a few minor details and chassis stamping). However at some point (at which I'm not 100% sure) Nissan changed the chassis on the S30 and beefed up some structural areas. As for performance between the 240z and 260z in Australia. I'm actually not sure which car was quicker in stock form. My guess is the 240z was the quicker car as most markets complained about the L26 not being as good. Motor magazine in Europe (accoding to Brian Long's book) claimed the European 260z was slower than the original 240z and fuel consumption suffered by as much as 25 percent. I guess I was originally trying to keep the post simple to help the original poster, but as you can see it gets quite complex

So much interest and only just posted it. I think you need to reconsider its value . Looks quite clean and tidy to me, no sunroof is a big plus!

Lurch is correct the shell is the deal breaker, if the car is rooted its very expensive to repair unless you can weld / panel beat by trade. The biggest safety improvement to me is the brakes. They were good for the 70's and praised alot in the day but by today's standards they are not very good. The 2+2's were slightly heavier so the brakes were updated (bigger booster) for the extra weight, but still not very good.

I was tempted to these are the same box as found in the Fairlady 2000 Roadster and I've heard the ratios are really good in them. Why do you say the synchros and dogs will annoy you? From what I've heard these are the Porsche style synchros and people say they are better than the later box? My dilemna is I don't really need it right now, but it would be 'nice' to have. For $450 big ones I might let someone else buy it.

Hi mate, The 240z was only available in 2 seater. The 260z was available as a 2 seater and 2+2 version (Fairlady 2by2 in Japan). The major difference between the 240z and 260z 2 seaters is: - Emission standards sapped power from the 260z L26 (Not L24) engine. The carbs are different. - The tail light design changed - The dashboard design changed due to ventilation criticism on early 240z's (although I prefer the design and look of a 240z style dash myself). - Chassis design changed over the years (but 260z chassis is a little big heavier and stronger so more ideal for big engine swaps). - Interior design patterns changed between 240z / 260z The 260z is actually a much more refined vehicle and corrected many problems, criticisms that motoring mags mentioned about the early 240z. Although due to emission regulations they were slower than the 240z in standing 1/4 mile and 0-60 mph (100 km/h). Having said that many owners have changed the 260z carbs for 240z Hitachi carbs to correct this issue. This is just a basic summary, there are lots of other small design changes for each year and sometimes each month of vehicle. It really comes back to what you want from the vehicle. If you want to modify it a 260z 2 seater is more suitable (although certain rules in different states mean that earlier cars are better for engineering *which is a shame). You also pay a premium for a 240z because everyone wants 1.

Nice looking 240z done up to Fairlady style specification. Watch for the end when he gives her a bit of stick.

That's great information. I never even thought of any of this to be honest when dating a car. I always looked for model differences to try and help me determine the year. I'm not sure because in Australia the 'lap belts' found in our Zeds (240z's anyway) appear to be of Australian origin (can't recall brand name off the top of my head), but they were unique to our market and fitted for ADR standards compliance. So that would give you an idea of when the car was imported I'd say but not neccessarily manufactured. Disclaimer: I could be wrong, very wrong

I think you can get them brand new from Nissan but they are expensive ($600) from memory. I think the best option is to look on Ebay US and find a reconditioned 1. The electronic modules on them tend to be the most expensive item and they are usually 20 years + old.

While I agree its not the nicest looking upgrade, I think Rev has a point. The only way to learn is to give it a go. I've fudged plenty of stuff myself in the past. But we learn from the experience. Good effort, but I think you may want to try and refine it a bit.

Its an amazing car alright, very clean and very well put together. I can't believe you said no to a drive, especially since you would have been able to see how the engine was to drive. I agree the L24 definitely has a peppy nature compared with the L28, although using a different set of rods with the L28 / LD28 crank helps to improve it. You can get lots of power out of the old L24, I've read about some of the numbers achieved from the l24 block back in the 70's when they were racing them and you certainly don't need the extra capacity to get a thrill of a ride. -
Its a great laugh, although I think it must have been a school project or something its too new to be an 'old' commercial.

Amazing, +1 for Colour Code I'm considering painting my 240z Silver as that's the original colour it left the factory in and I think Silver looks amazing on S30's.

Nope, the dashboard is definitely 260z, but the rear tail light garnish area has cut outs for 240z tail lights. So my guess is the body is of 240z type (HS30) probably 1973 due to the side repeaters on the front fenders, and the dashboard is 260z. Interesting that the hatch glass has a demister. Although all these changes could have been made during the cars life. Definitely inspect this 1 before buying, there are certain things that just don't add up. I really don't like the paint job, but that's just me. -

Looks like it has hole in the roof, and its a 260z 2 seater. I'd be stripping that paint straight off though, doesn't look like it was done that well judging by the engine bay anyway. -
Guys can you take some photos of kinglake for me? Having been away overseas and hearing about the fire has made it hard to imagine the damage. As some of you may know our family had a house up there that unfortunately no longer exists. It would be great to see the regrowth.

By the way is your chassis prefix HS30 or S30? Just looking at your signature there. -

Hi Gary, Welcome to the site hope you find it useful. I never saw Zspares out in Clayton only visited Zshop in Glen Iris. If you end up changing out the interior let me know as I'd be very interested in it. I'm thinking of returning my 240z to Silver and a red interior would suit really well. I think it looks good against the white also though . Car looks nice and clean despite what you say about the paint, its far better than what most start with, so looks like you kept her in good condition. What has been done to the engine? And were all the previous engines L-series? -
NEW Wangan Midnight live action movie announced
gav240z replied to Cdr Zero's topic in General Discussions
I'll say they must not have been able to find a 2 seater in a wrecking yard. So they settled for a blue 2by2 . LOL, its kind of like Fast and the Furious tragic, only acceptable due to an S30 being the star car. I'd say if you weren't an S30 fan this movie would be quite dull.
