Back to original question and to fan the fire further. 2 additional seats in the back has a profoundly negative impact on value as does adding an X to the badge. Ducks and hides....

Don't worry I'm relaxed I haven't seen a totally original unmodified S30z come up for sale. They have always had some level of modification. Imagine if HS30 0004 was put on the market in totally original shape? What do you think that is worth? $30K? I doubt it. It's probably worth a whole lot more than that. If it had an RB26 it's appeal would be diminished. I don't think modifying has to destroy the value of a car, but with each modification you potentially narrow the audience of would be buyers willing to pay top dollar. It's quite possible you'll find the perfect buyer for a 20B swapped S30z (which I'd love to do) and get the money you ask for it, but the chances are slimmer than for an original S30z. I agree I'm a big fan of the HS30-H A.K.A Fairlady 240ZG look. Replica or genuine article doesn't bother me, but that's period correct looking. I see a lot of S30z's modified in a non period correct fashion. When I originally wrote my list it was a list of generalisations, I wasn't being very specific to every edge case. Thanks for articulating what I've obviously failed to do, I agree that I am somewhat speculating as to what will be in demand in future. However with more and more cars being modified the originals are going to get harder and harder to find. If there is demand for original examples and not many around prices will of course rise. You see it all the time with cars that were popular to chop up and change at a certain point coming full circle to being in high demand in original shape. In 30 years time I bet you'll see S13, S14, S15s etc.. going for big money in unrestored original shape. Clean R32 GTRs are starting to rise in value in original shape. Those are the market forces I see...

This in itself will cause values to sky rocket. If nobody is willing to sell them, then demand will be high and supply will remain low. Job done! .

I'm definitely converting 3 of them to Quartz movement, the 4th from HS30 00150 I'm not sure about yet. I might keep it original and failure prone . Ron is located in California (just outside of LA). However if you have a 260z (74 model excluded) your clock might be different to the earlier JECO clocks. We have a repair guide in the interior section of the forum for 260z clocks. -
Yeah Lurch isn't a fan of Safari Gold, he likes it when all S30z's are painted red the fastest most original colour . We all know anything can be reversed, it's just a matter of how hard it is. I'd say fixing cut fenders is up there with sunroof repairs in terms of difficulty and expense. Front guards not a big deal, rear a slightly different matter. You have to also repaint the areas and match the paint. Harder to do with some paint colours and older paint jobs etc.. For anyone without your skills mate it's not that easy . And let's face it a lot of S30z / Classic car enthusiasts are scared to tackle body work.

I knew some would read into my post the wrong way. I'm not saying customisation is wrong, but from a collector perspective and arguably a collector is where the most value would come at time of sale, the safest way to retain value is to stay as original as possible. Of course if you took my post literally an engine swap to an S20 power plant would also devalue an S30z, since it's not an L-series engine. Bloody skyline motors! . To somewhat prove my point... 1. http://www.carsales.com.au/private/details/Datsun-240Z-1970/SSE-AD-2694715/?Cr=0 a. Non original colour b. Non period correct wheels c. Custom interior Is it a bad car? Absolutely not, even though the owner probably spent more than asking price on it's full restoration. I suspect if it had a more original theme and a slightly lower price tag it would have sold a while ago. But it's been sitting there for years! 2. http://www.carsales.com.au/private/details/Datsun-240Z-1973/SSE-AD-3239760/?Cr=1 a. The paint colour is not going to appease everyone. b. Non period wheels c. 300zx seats Is it a bad car? From memory it was very straight and clean. The restoration appears to have held up. The custom touches though are hurting it's true potential in terms of value (just my opinion). I suspect it will be listed for a while. But I of course could be wrong.

A bit of overlap below, but what I think and see is... 1. Non originality. 2. Previous owners and botched repairs. 3. Poor bodywork and poor body repairs. (bog rockets) 4. Engine swaps away from the L-Banger. Yes I went there... 5. Non original / or non period correct colours and hues. 6. Lack of attention to detail with restoration. I see this a lot, skimp on the small stuff etc.. 7. Trying to make them into something they're not, which encompasses horrid body kits and aftermarket accessories. 8. Interior re-trim kits that don't retain the original look. 9. Sunroofs - those bloody big holes in the roof tin. Adding flares to a 260z 2 seater? I don't know if 260z's are quite at the same desirability as 240z's in terms of collector value. I think a lot of people still want the 2 seater with ZG look with a front spoiler, 432-R rear wing, big rota's and a turbo straight 6. The kind of person who wants an early S30z (I would includes myself in this category) goes for a car that is as original looking at possible. Where as the later 260z crowd is more likely to be the "into stance", "big turbo's" demographic and therefore probably likes the flared look etc.. No doubt I managed to offend someone here....

Don't know yet, depends if you send a good core. All of mine have some imperfection (except for the HS30 00150 clock), in that the bezels are cracked from hamfisted owners, the glass is broken in some way, internally rusted (the donor dash I got from sitting in weather) etc.. So I guess it will depend on work required. If you replace the mechanism with a Quartz movement, it should be far more reliable than the original design which was subject to dust / dirt / contamination (in the automotive environment) and which is what kills them. I plan to restore all 4 clocks and offer 2 for sale on an exchange / core charge basis with owners. Since I have a surplus I figure why not? -
I said 250k. http://www.viczcar.com/forum/index.php/topic,2630.msg164549.html#msg164549 Partly to blame is the forum software, but also restriction on space for the web-server. Remember hosting costs mostly come out of my pocket. With a few generation donations from time to time.

That's about what I guessed it would fetch if I recall correctly? Hmm maybe I have a career in car valuation?

Rev if you're still looking for work and consider living in Sydney, have a look at this here. http://www.google.com.au/about/careers/locations/sydney/ If you see anything of interest let me know and I can put forward your application*. *Yes I get a finders fee, but also a referral from an internal person takes higher priority and gives you a better chance at least of at least getting to the first round.

So I sent back 1 of my Rally Clock's and Oscillator boxes to Ron along with 4 standard Jeco clocks. 1 Rally Clock for some reason has stopped working. The other Oscillator was running a little slow, loosing about 5 mins every hour. So overnight would loose about 30 mins or so. Ron warned me that sometimes these clocks don't like to be woken up after years or lying dormant. Just another reason the later Calendar clocks are probably a better option for those wanting the same experience but less failure points. Anyway the plan is to refurbish the standard clocks. But 1 thing I found was this: Note: The serial numbers on the back? Reskinned dash 71 = 1061J 72 240z (my red 240z in Melbourne) = 1121J HS30 00150 = 0096 Rough Dashboard (got this free) = Unknown - was already wrapped up. I suspect it was a 71 240z because the temp gauge delimiters are what I see on early cars. I asked Ron, it seems these numbers were internal to Jeco only, they don't seem to have any significant meaning outside of that. But I figure if it's documented here maybe 1 day we'll figure it out? So I'm in 2 minds about the clock for HS30 00150, on the 1 hand I'm thinking I'll preserve the original motor mechanism and refurbish it, I also would kind of like to preserve the original code stamped on the back. Mainly because it's part of the car and part's history, all those years ago it was stamped. On the other hand it won't be seen and it's better to have it working than restored to original and failing again in the future? The other thing is for the most part I'll be running the Rally Clock anyway.. So perhaps over thinking it? I've gone from Rat Rod build to meticulous preservation of early 240z. - yeah I know... -
Now that's a Mercedes I'd like to own haha.

I'm sorry to hear about that, I wouldn't get hung up on it though, there is always another deal and often a better deal around the corner. Save a bit more cash and when the right deal comes along you'll be able to make a cash offer straight up. -

To be frank if 2k will make or break it you won't get far with a rusty z. You'll spend 3x initial price fixing rust. That is the reality. Not gonna sugar coat it. If you do some of the body work maybe you'll save money on labour etc.. Good luck but maybe evaluate buying a wreck vs a rust free restored example. -

Tempting but not worth the effort. He is a jerk. What about the Green 240z I'd go for that anyway being an earlier car and I like that original green. -

Looks like Cuong's 240z #575 he sold not long ago. Member RB26DETT http://www.viczcar.com/forum/index.php/topic,2630.msg161443.html#msg161443 Last sold around $5k, make him an offer. Doesn't look like any progress has been made since it was last sold. Now aren't you glad we keep track of these things on this site? -
Also saw this recently listed as Skyline Knob. http://page18.auctions.yahoo.co.jp/jp/auction/w117696073#enlargeimg Went for approx $150 AU before shipping / auction fee's etc..

Hi Guys, I have another 5 speed gear knob for sale. It has very light wear, the outer chrome trim has very minor blemishing, but otherwise in great shape as you can hopefully see from the photos. Comparing with another I sold recently here. http://www.viczcar.com/forum/index.php/topic,14947.0.html It would appear to have a slightly different grip, the previous 1 had more of a leather look, where as this has more of a rubber texture. Could be from a similar era Nissan Skyline or Bluebird? Going to list this 1 at $150 neg due to great condition and rarity of these knobs.

Congrats on getting it done, lots of work involved no doubt! Happy that you no longer have a hole in the roof?

There is no point questioning what previous owners do, they just do these things. I've stopped questioning their motives and realised they are mostly all idiots with no clue. HAHA.

+1 agree I don't like the tactic, when I bought HS30 00150 several people tried to offer more for the car after the auction ended on eBay, to the credit of the seller he stood by his word and sold me the car for the final bid price, we both agreed we thought it would go higher but at the end of the day everyone had an opportunity to bid and it went for what it did. Deal done etc.. I think it's only fair you get it, I don't think sentimental value counts for shit, he let it rot. How sentimental can he be about it? Yesterday I posted a link to a wheeler dealers interview. http://www.viczcar.com/forum/index.php/topic,15636.msg165948.html#msg165948 and I can't believe I'm about to quote Mr Brewer but I agree with him on this point.
