Ledge Posted January 11, 2013 Posted January 11, 2013 HI all,Well as some of you know i have been restoring old vehiclesat Finch Restorations for many many years. I have now decided to start my own business so I have more control over the quality of work I do. The business name will be.Custom and Classic cars. The business is open as of now at Unit3/22 Oborn road Mount Barker SA.web page is herewww.customandclassiccars.com.auThe main objective is to give customers the BEST RESTORATION period. And with an hourly rate that will start at $55 +gst it will not cost youyour first born and both arms. This will mean that we will be able togive a METAL Finished resto for a similar cost to an average bog job.We will have a separate assembly area so there is no worries about yourfreshly painted car getting covered in weld spatter and grinding sparks. The setup will be ongoing for a few months as we already have 4 resto's to do.so hopefully by the middle of the year we will be at 100%.Here is some of my workhttp://www.viczcar.com/forum/topic/9383-making-rust-replacement-sections/Hear is the first batch of metal working tools just waiting to be worked.More info shortlyhttps://www.facebook.com/CustomAndClassicCars?ref=hlRegardsPaul Quote
zzzzed Posted January 11, 2013 Posted January 11, 2013 Awesome. I would love to do just restorations. Car yard work and insurance jobs just don't give me the same satisfaction Quote
garvice Posted January 11, 2013 Posted January 11, 2013 Good luck with it Ledge. $45 an hour seems ludicrously cheap for an hourly rate covering overheads too (is it just you?). Then again, car owners are often ludicrously tight (which is probably why I am learning to do my own work, ha). Quote
Retro Z Posted January 11, 2013 Posted January 11, 2013 Awesome Paul. Wish you were in Melbourne. Quote
luvemfast Posted January 12, 2013 Posted January 12, 2013 Best of luck. But have to agree that you're selling yourself cheap @$45 an hour running as a business! Quote
C.A.R. Posted January 12, 2013 Posted January 12, 2013 Great stuff Paul I'd be interested in your opinion of the MetalMan English Wheel too... Quote
Moderators Zedman240® Posted January 12, 2013 Moderators Posted January 12, 2013 Wish you were in Melbourne too! Hope you are very successful..but at $45/hr, I think you will be swamped with work! and in these times, that is very rare.. Quote
Ledge Posted January 12, 2013 Author Posted January 12, 2013 Thanks for the best wishes lads, much appreciated. The rate has been worked out as a bare bones cost. I am the only person there at the moment and will be taking a minimal wage during the first 6 months. Yes 55 is cheap, damn cheap but have done all the checking and should be manageable. This has been done so i can get your car near perfect and not have to stress to much about the cost to the customer. Knowhere else in Australia will you get this level of work for that hourly rate. BUT I will note give you a fixed quote. Your car will cost whatever it cost to get it to MY standard, not yours. At the end of the day cars are brought to me for quality and that is what they will be given. Most shops these days would be over 80 so this means i can spend 60% more time and it wont cost more money. QUALITY not Quantity. For any interstate jobs i will cover the return cost of your car. But the job must be over 5g, less than that and we will talk. Smart people will do the math and realize even if they pay for vehicle shipping both ways they are still getting a better job on there beloved car. I have enough room in the shop for 7 cars, have 4 in already. places are disappearing fast. Then people will go on a waiting list situation, If you don't want to wait that's fine. Guys i do resto cause i love it, not to earn money. Yes i need money to live but i prefer to do what i love rather than earn another few hundy more each week. Cheers Paul Sweeeeeeet tig, Plasma and foot shrinker/stretcher Quote
Ledge Posted January 12, 2013 Author Posted January 12, 2013 Hi Ol tinpot, Mate when it comes to a wheel you really need to think about what you need it for. The metalman wheel is a great product and i will eventually be getting one, BUT A wheel of that size is really for making whole panels, guards, roof skins etc etc. If you look in my pics i have only got a medium sized wheel. from memory think it was around 7 hundy. This size is fine for 90% of rust sections that you will ever make. There are also smaller ones which are useful to but i don't think they are worth it. Bench mount ones tend to be a pain so get one you can bolt to the floor. or if you get a bench mount one make a frame so you can bolt it to the floor. There are a few medium sized wheels online from 4-9 hundy so it really does depend on what the purpose is. For what you are doing i would say get one like in my pics and it will be great. They are hard to use and you will definitely run your fingers over whilst learning to use it but once you understand them. very very useful machine. Cheers Mate Quote
C.A.R. Posted January 12, 2013 Posted January 12, 2013 Thanks Paul. I thought the E/Wheel in your first photo was a MM one - my mistake. Quote
munters Posted January 12, 2013 Posted January 12, 2013 Hello Paul Also all the best for your business. Here in Switzerland the average rate is between 100 (country side) to 140 (City)/ hour. Your price is realy low... Are you able to build panels and ship them to europe? Nobody knows those cars here. (just 43 delivered 240z's in 1972 for example) Thanks Marcel Quote
Ledge Posted January 12, 2013 Author Posted January 12, 2013 Hi Munters What panels are you after, Yes i can make and send but you need to understand this will be costly, even at my rate. Let me know what you are after and we will go from there. Cheers Paul Quote
thriller Posted January 13, 2013 Posted January 13, 2013 Looking good Paul. Should have offered earlier but hadn't thought of it; if whoevers doing the website doesn't pan out I'm happy to offer some help, can knock up almost anything you'd like. Quote
Ledge Posted January 13, 2013 Author Posted January 13, 2013 Thriller come in when your back and have a chat. should have your ally bits welded mid week and your flares are wanting to go home. Cheers Paul Quote
munters Posted January 13, 2013 Posted January 13, 2013 Hello Paul Im looking for front strut housing, front inner fender and the fresh air ASSY-REINF HOOD (OEM PartNr: 64150N4600) even the Firewall would be an idea. Thanks Marcel Quote
Scoota G Posted January 14, 2013 Posted January 14, 2013 2 i say Two days and you have international attention. Delete that part where you put in your Hourly Rate. The top shelf guys in Ballarat run at $95 an hour and others run at $75. I think you're worth more than you are asking but still it's great to see another having a shot at it. As fuzzydropbear say "It's a dream job" for guys like us. Quote
Ledge Posted January 14, 2013 Author Posted January 14, 2013 Hi scoota, Yeah I'm aware i can charge more, and i am sure the rate will go up. but for now its about earning a living and getting the word out with good word of mouth. I will try to keep the rate as low as possible for as long as possible. Marcel, please pm me and i will give you an email address to send pics of what you want. Are you after re manufactured panels, rebuilt panels or secondhand panels. Cheers Paul Quote
Ledge Posted January 18, 2013 Author Posted January 18, 2013 Hi Lads, Well its been a hectic fortnight for me and have made headway in the setup of the workshop. But the best bit is that my mate has finished rough design for the workshop logo and here it is, Colour will be added shortly. Cheers Paul Gregs page is here, sure he would love to draw some of your Z's http://www.gtuz.com.au/ Quote
garvice Posted January 18, 2013 Posted January 18, 2013 I think that would have to be one of the first logos for a "Classic" metal shop that featured a Z. Like it! Quote
thriller Posted January 18, 2013 Posted January 18, 2013 Love it! Reminds me of these 'Choro-Q' toys that are popular over in j-land Quote

The owner is pretty fussy so this thing is going to be close to if not the best in Aus. Metal finished, Rotiserrie, 2K underneath etc etc. Yeah pete i love these cars too. Saying im excited about this job is the understatement of the year. Cheers Paul Quote
