Rare spares rear hatch seal

Anyone had issues with rear window seals from rare spares?

 

Tried fitting my new hatch seal today. Bought front and rear window seals from rare spares, the front was perfect but the rear seems to be a dud. The 'lip' that retains the stainless trim is too small on the top corners, much smaller than everywhere else on the seal. I couldn't get it to stay in and the seal would deform as a result so I was unable to fit it.

I got my rubbers from rare spares they were to say the least, rubbish! poor fitting the door seals have no right angle just one long strip which you can get from clarke rubber I used them only cause I was to lousy to buy more, top LHF of the screen is nearly all mastic  the rubber did not seal on the roof, hard to describe but there was a hole about 3 inches long where the rubber didn't meet the roof and just folded in If I had to do it again I would be looking for a better supplier

Hmmmm. Mark my front was ok, as good as original. But the rear is crap, The trim lips on the top corners would be 2mm, rest of the seal is 6mm each side.

 

Linton I did fit the hatch inner seal I got from them and like you I'm not impressed with that. Totally different thickness, profile and its a rough fit. Seems like a universal piece that's near enough  :-\

 

I'm going to try to exchange it for another, but this time ill check it before leaving the store. If all else fails ill try to get a refund and buy genuine Nissan. There return policy on the bag says within 7days....

I got mine from Scotts auto rubbers in Melbourne....fitted perfect. Not sure if theyre still about

I got mine from Scotts and I'm having the same issues as everyone else because it's just a generic seal. I cut my losses and have an MSA kit here for when I get off my ass and fit it

Here's a pic of the inner hatch seal fitted, you can see how high the hatch sits. Hopefully it compresses with a bit of time.

That's pretty much exactly what mine has done... even after 6 months worth of compression. Like I said I'm getting a new seal and starting again it's annoying me so badly.

There's a seal softener product available(not sure of the name), you basically apply it and close the door/hatch. The seal is supposed to stay softer and more squashed. I might try this if it gets on my t$ts after a while.

 

Rare spares issued a full refund and were really good to deal with. They checked stock in store and the wharehouse. All rear window seals were the same, so they have defected them and will do a recall. Store man said it looks like a tooling issue, which means a few months for everything to be checked and new seals supplied to stores.

i've noticed that my hatch is sitting a little higher than normal as well.

Haven't had a close look but it may be a new seal causing it to sit higher or it may just require an adjustment

 

Did you ever find out what this so called softener is called as i'd like to give that a go

 

how much is a new hatch seal from all z parts ? (couldnt find a website)

Mine are from rare spares and fit great. But then I did buy them around 8 years ago, maybe the quality has slipped?

I bought rear one from rares for 2+2 fitted perfectly.

 

For the 240z i got genuine nissan one. Havent tried fitting it yet.

 

As for inner seal Gareth thats massive difference. How does the hatch sit without the seal?Check if gap from the seal lip and flat bit of the hatch is paralel and even gap all around. No seal is going to compress that much either the seal is full of rubber should be hollow to allow compression or your seal lip is too high.

The rare spares inner hatch seal is IMHO a generic seal that fits many cars and is also useable on the 240z/260z's. It looked to be taller and much fatter than my original seal, I have just left it for the time being. I adjusted the catch behind the license plate lamp, it sits perfectly when closed and provides a super tight seal.

 

I never followed up with the rear window seal as I got a replacement from allZparts. If your looking at replacing seals I would say take an example and check in store before you buy.

 

You could try genuine Nissan IF you can find a dealership smart enough to look them up for you. If I was doing it again I'd go genuine nissan and then I would never have had an issue
