New Member - 260z Perth

Hey

 

Just thought I should introduce myself,

I'm just about to start restoring my 260z, it was my first car and the rust has seriously started to set in!

I realise I've got a heck of a lot of work ahead of me, especially with the rust in the panels that you cant get replacement ones for.

 

Anyway wish me luck! I'll start asking some questions soon.

From the one photo, as best we can tell,  it looks as though the car was straight and original with rust the #1 issue to deal with.

 

When you get the time, post up some more details of your car, your history with the car, what you know of its previous history and what you intend to do with it. It looks as though you have exposed the known rust areas in the first step to restoring / refreshing the car - that will certainly get enthusiastic support from members on this forum.

Rust is definitely the biggest issue, stripping back the car it also seems to have had light rear end damage in the past

 

Its my first car and i got it back in about 2002 from a guy in mount hawthorn, but apart from that im not sure of the history of the car

It had not long had a new paint job when I got it, but it has now re-rusted around all the old repairs.

I drove it up until about a year ago, I've had a few offers to buy it over the years, if any ones noticed it its been parked in Subiaco and then West Leederville for most of its life.

 

Its very exciting to be almost starting the restoration I've been waiting so long to do it, my only regret is not covering it up better over the years, I'm definitely going to pay for that now in the rust repairs!

Would be great to see some more pictures of the rust, most of these zeds need rust repair anyways so you're in good company here. I like the over riders, does it still have them on the rear too?

Anytime you look at a project like this as a whole it seems really daunting but when you break it down into 55 small repairs then you can tackle it and still keep your sanity. What's your steel fabrication/ welding skills like, are you willing to learn as well as have the time to complete a project like this and how will you strip the car? It's not the worst shell i've seen but you would have to do a Zed in this condition for the love of it!

What month and year is your car? If the louvres on the bonnet and the alloy wheels are any indication it looks to be a late model (1977?) two seater - do not see many of those around. Just out of curiosity, is it still fairly original e.g. flat top carbs.

 

You sound like you are checking out your options and are almost ready to go for it. Good to see you checking your car thoroughly, posting pics and asking questions before committing to any particular course of action.

hey, thanks for all the responses!

I've only got basic welding skills at the moment, but I've bought myself a mig and I figure I'll learn as I go, hopefully!

It is a 1977 260z, not sure of the month thou, it doesnt have the original flat tops I'm not sure if it has the original block, will have to check

 

I plan on stripping it down to the bare shell, its way past anything else, to start with I'm focusing on getting it to a rolling shell and figure I'll deal with the rest when I get there. I plan on sourcing replacement panels for most of the front and mid of the car, but I dont think that I can get any for the rear quarter window and back, so this is the part I figure will be the trickiest. I'm going to get cracking in just over a month, so I'll start a build thread then

 

It definitely is for the love, I wouldn't pick a project like this if I was searching for one now!

Jesus this really is a long time between posts

 

I'm still slowly working on my zed, right now im fixing some rust in the nose area and just though I'd post some photos to get some advice and tips

 

As well as this my car has had a front end collision at some time and i think it has had the front section rewelded in, so I think im going to have to try find another car which I can compare mine with to make sure that they've fixed this correctly. Maybe I should ask this in a different section of the forum?

Oh maybe I wasn't that clear, I've already fabricated that section the first photo is what it looks like now

 

Before I bought the car I was told that it had hit a kangaroo and it looks like the crossmember has been replaced and I was wondering whether I need to check if it was done properly otherwise maybe the bonnet or surrounding panels might not line up properly?

looks good to me, one thing though, id put a drain hole in the bottom left corner at the lowest point. If you look at Gav's link, the panel Scoota made, has a drainage spout on the bottom corner. Just drill a 6mm hole there or something along those lines.
