Indy Posted February 27, 2012 Posted February 27, 2012 I have a 260Z (2+2), slightly worked L26, 5 speed manual, no rust, stock standard. I got a complete rb20 setup with gearbox, that came out of a 260Z and was wanting to do the swap. But then, my 260Z is too good for me to change from stock and didn't have the heart to butcher it. Then, I got spoilt for choice. Found a rolling shell 260Z and a 280ZX (not targa). Now,I want to put the rb20 setup into one of these, whether the 260Z or the 280ZX ? The only advantage I see in a 280ZX is the powersteering but other than that...I want to stick to the 260Z shell, already bare metal, no rust and straight. ThoughtZ?? Cheers, Indy WA Quote
handsandwhich Posted February 27, 2012 Posted February 27, 2012 Paper rock scissors? Or in this case 2+2, 260z, 280zx. I'd go the 260z since it is already a rolling shell. Still not a simple drop in job though. Bit of fabricating and money needed to make it all come together. Quote
luvemfast Posted February 27, 2012 Posted February 27, 2012 +1 for the 260Z rolling shell. If the RB20 you have cam out of a Z, it should be a bolt in job Quote
Administrators gav240z Posted February 27, 2012 Administrators Posted February 27, 2012 But... do you really want the hassle of 2 cars, 2 lots of rego? I don't think putting an RB20 into a 260z is going to butcher it. It depends on how you do the install really, create a good loom, get your mounts fabricated (as far as I understand the dimensions are not that different, gearbox hole should line up no?) Original is good, but RB20 should be a relatively straight forward swap and you can always convert back later if you really want to. Quote
zzzzed Posted February 27, 2012 Posted February 27, 2012 I would rather put an rb20 in a good clean straight car than a bucket. Quote
luvemfast Posted February 27, 2012 Posted February 27, 2012 I would rather put an rb20 in a good clean straight car than a bucket. Well, that makes sense Quote
Scoota G Posted February 28, 2012 Posted February 28, 2012 I got a complete rb20 setup with gearbox, that came out of a 260Z If it came out of a 260Z should be easy as the mods would've had to been done to fit it . . . I think some pics are in order! Quote
Indy Posted February 28, 2012 Author Posted February 28, 2012 Thanks for the replies, I am leaning towards the 260Z. Tough finding a two seater in WA, would love to find atelast a rolling shell. The complete setup is out of a 260Z , engine ,gearbox, loom, exhaust etc. and is going to be a few months to get it all done. I will make sure I have pics coming. Once the work starts,I will start a new thread. Cheers, Indy Quote
