Hi guys,

i'm looking into a rear brake setup for my 240z..

I currently have on the shelf an r31 rear setup but a few people have told me to steer clear of using it.

After browsing the net, i've found this one which seems pretty good.

Apparently they are mustang GT rear calipers... not sure how much more stopping power they will have over the r31 setup.

Anyone running this setup?

Would like to hear your opinions.

Any particular reason you were told not to use r31 rear set up?

Hi gav240z

A couple of guys who are running R31 setups on Datsun 1600 have had problems with calipers seizing up.

Also had difficulties and issues in hooking up the hand brake.

Its still early days for me, i'm a few months away from fitting so at this stage just having a look around at options.

I'll be running an SR20 with fairly decent sized snail + a few extra mods.

I just want to make sure it will stop me... and be reliable.

I too have heard of the same issues, even with the 300zx/s13 aka modern-motorsport conversions. I think the issues is related to the dual purpose of the caliper ie disc brake duties and park brake duties. It was this reason I went for a internal drum in hat disc brake conversion. Little drum for the park brake job and a single purpose caliper on the disc.

So I think this setup would have the same issues as it has a dual purpose caliper setup also. This is just my opinion.

I've been running the R31 setup for some time and my calipers did seize up on the test fit. Then i took them apart, cleaned and greased them (yes you use grease on the internals) and fitted a new kits. never had a problem since and the handbrake never worked that good with drums.

Is it just me or do those "Mustang" brakes look strangely similar to an R31 caliper anyway?

Also since they work the same way as an R31 caliper how is it not going to have the same problems?

Does anyone know where you can buy the Mustang calipers in Aus? I'm considering buying the hardware from Silvermine but getting the discs and calipers locally to save on shipping. From what I have read the calipers are from an 05-10 Mustang. Anyone know what the discs are?

Also could I use stainless steel brake lines that were made for the stock 240z brakes or would they have a different thread?

I was looking at this setup as I'm looking for rear discs with a handbrake and I have been waiting for Dave at arizona to release his kit but I have no idea when/if it will be made available.

Just found this from the vendor on HybridZ (as of 2008):

The rotors are also available at any store but you do have to re drill them to 4x4.5 bolt pattern.

The calipers, pads, and rotors are all off the 2008 Ford Mustang GT500

I don't know a great deal about engineering and approving mods for brakes etc. are there any issues in Australia with having re-drilled rotors approved/complianced? I guess I'll need to find myself an engineer ;)

Shipping is like 150-200 bucks. Just save the effort and support the guys business and get it shipped. Everything costs more in Australia too so are you sure you'd come out ahead?

No I'm not sure which is why I am researching. I don't mind supporting him (which is why I'm looking at buying some parts from him instead of getting the brackets made here) but another brake kit supplier in the states is charging $395 postage to Aus and I can't justify that. So before I waste his time with a quote I wanted to work out all of the details and work out the best way to go. In the end it probably will just be easier to get everything from him. I think finding out the availability and legality of parts is also worth investigation.

Also I'm compiling a list of brake upgrades but with more information such as part numbers, piston area etc. so all of this information is helpful.

Yeah I've been trawling forums finding out the different sizes for different setups. I'd say realistically I've got about 50% of the information I need for the 5 or 6 common conversions that are done. When I get it a bit more sorted I'll start a thread and others can add any info they have :D

Adding up the bills for Sam (Bozo)

$145            R31 Brakes

$40              Pads

$148.85        Slotted rotors

$200            Modify, machine brackets + sandblast and paint calipers

$70              Caliper kit

$603.85 and that's without the rear brake lines.
