scrapiron Posted March 10, 2011 Posted March 10, 2011 Afternoon, my 1976 280Z 2+2, has shutting down issues, I will be driving alone at 50 MPH and the vehicle will just shut down and immediately fire back up, I guess you could say it hesitates, I've replace the Elec, fuel pump, the fuel regulator, distributor cap, rotor, plugs and wiring all needing replacing anyway, any suggestions on what cause the engine to hesitate and immediately fire back up, could it have anything to do with the reluctor adjustment? any assistant and/or suggestion will be appreciated. peter mc Posted March 10, 2011 Posted March 10, 2011 the ignition is being cut it may be a loose wire on the coil or a faulty ignition switch the best way to find it is to give the wires a Rigel while it idling and see if it cuts out it will be on the power side of the ignition Quote
Moderators Zedman240® Posted March 10, 2011 Moderators Posted March 10, 2011 +1 with the ignition switch that may be at fault; seen it before! Remove the cover on the steering column and like Peter said, move the wires around and see if it cuts the engine. Another one is connectors on the coil; some people pull on the wires instead of the connector and breaking the conductors inside the wire. Where you can't see the break but only contacts now and then. Quote
Roberto Posted March 11, 2011 Posted March 11, 2011 If you have upgraded to a 280zx distributor, the ignition module may be starting to fail.... Quote
RB30X Posted March 11, 2011 Posted March 11, 2011 does it only do it when the engine is at its hottest? Quote
Scoota G Posted March 11, 2011 Posted March 11, 2011 I'm going Blocked Fuel Filter on this one. Quote
d3c0y Posted March 15, 2011 Posted March 15, 2011 I'm with Scoota on this one - you should always do a filter when you do the pump too! Quote
gilltech Posted March 15, 2011 Posted March 15, 2011 My 260 pulled that stunt on me quite a few times - both idling stationary or moving, very erratic occurences - & it turned out to be some sort of aftermarket ignitor or whatever its called which a PO must have installed in the distributor to eliminate the mechanical points. MaygZ Posted March 15, 2011 Posted March 15, 2011 If you find that it is doing it at about the same rev range each time, and that rev range is not in the screaming range, then I would suggest having a look at the capacitor on the distributor. These are cheap and eventually break down. I chased a similar problem around for days some time ago, replacing everything in a process of elimination. After spend $60-70 I found it was a $2 capacitor!! Worth a try and certainly fits the symptoms. Good luck. MaygZ Quote
