acf321 Posted August 26, 2010 Posted August 26, 2010 Just wanted to start a specific new thread on this, because its killing me.. and no two views on this subject are the same. I need an extractor set for my rather enhanced L24 (see brown hornet thread) and I am considering either Stahl, or Kameari in mild steel (the price of which is approx 1/3rd the stainless sets). Does anybody have either a Stahl, Kameari, or Nissan Competition tuned length header system on their 240Z and what is the experience, both good and bad. Topics to consider are; 1) sound - are these things crazy loud under normal driving use? 2) does the LHD Stahl unit effect use on a RHD car? 3) does either one specifically make more proven power than the other? At this stage, i'm leaning to the Stahl, because the Nissan ones are literally IMPOSSIBLE to buy ... and the Kameari is frightfully expensive. There's always the local muffler place to build me a set .. but that set is a one off that is untested and frankly I have no idea if it'll work or either add or subtract from the cars HP. Keen for all thoughts on this from those with experience on the matter.. Seems the Hybridz guys are equally miffed. Cheers Adam
Riceburner Posted August 26, 2010 Posted August 26, 2010 What about these.......... Yahoo Japan, bid is at 185,00 yen or buy now 295,000 yen!
NZeder Posted August 26, 2010 Posted August 26, 2010 My last 240z (larger than stock engine) I purchase a set of these from Japan http://www.nengun.com/kakimoto-racing/exhaust-manifold but at 48.5mm primaries they might be a little large for a 2400ish cc engine - they worked well on my larger L6 power car
peter mc Posted August 26, 2010 Posted August 26, 2010 those 6into1 nos 10000 rpm =10sec 1/4 mile :)mmmm
Riceburner Posted August 26, 2010 Posted August 26, 2010 those 6into1 nos 10000 rpm =10sec 1/4 mile :)mmmm Hehe! You would need a perspex front end.... It would be a tradgedy to hide those away! NZeders look the sensible choice
C.A.R. Posted August 27, 2010 Posted August 27, 2010 Stop fart-arseing about Adam & get the SW Motorsport race extractors - at least keep the $ in the country. You've spent nearly 100k on this build, so what's an extra $1600? At least you know they will fit & that they will perform as described!
acf321 Posted August 27, 2010 Author Posted August 27, 2010 Thanks Lurch. I spoke to Stewart about those and the reason i'm not convinced they're right is they are designed for a larger motor than a 2.5, and according to Stewart may be oversized for my application. I think they're 1 7/8" or very near, and so this is too big. Jere Stahl and others i've spoken to suggest 1 5/8" is the max I should use.
PZG302 Posted August 27, 2010 Posted August 27, 2010 Shouldn't cost too much more if any to get Stewart to make a set to suit your application based on the existing design, he's really only having to use a smaller diamter pipe. As i've said before, if Andy is still at Penrith Muffler Man, he will build a good set to suit. Mine definately won't work in your application, 2.9 litre motor and built with a 3" pipe all the way through. Cost to get a set custom made will still be arounf the $1500 mark or so.
acf321 Posted August 28, 2010 Author Posted August 28, 2010 Hey Matt ... you nailed it! I woke up extra early today (with the help of my two and four year old girls) and called Stahl in the US, and then Nissan Motorsports USA. When I called up Stahl, this fellow answered and I asked Jere Stahl, aka company founder and the guy says; "This is Jere Stahl". We spoke for ten minutes or so and he asked about my car ... He told me that in the day, the SCCA cars made 275-290HP from 2.5L L24's. He suggested the best bet for a 'warm' L24 (if anybody is at all interested) is 'probably the 1 5/8" primary with 2.5" collector, but more than likely the 1.5" with 2.25" collector'. As he had said in an email to me, he reiterated on the phone that you are much better going for a smaller diameter primary, because the equal length effect has a significantly superior scavenging effect, and thus does not warrant the larger tube. Its interesting, because I also spoke to Kameari this week, and they recommended a 48mm primaries, which is 1.8", a reasonable cry from Jere's 1.5" idea. As an aside, Jere DID say that if the car was going to be used for 85%+ for track use, then the 1 5/8" would be the go. Also, the Stahl is US$910 + post, which looks to be anywhere upwards of $US300. Lets call that $1800 landed and coated. On the Nissan Motorsport call, Paul suggested he would be able to tell me the timing of when a new batch of Nissan competition headers that they are having made up next week. He was pretty unconvincing though. No idea on price. SO .. I then called Andy (who does still exist), the Penrith Muffler Man. He was excellent. First thing he said is he makes heaps of motorsport headers, especially those for Datsuns, and when I was on the line, he had a Datsun race engineer in there making an order. He suggested that he would do 6-2-1 for me, that he would 'mathematically calculate as to the correct length' (as opposed to having a stab in the dark!), and the headers would not only be tuned equal length, but would be based on the firing pattern of the motor (that is two sets of three pulses). He suggested 1 5/8" as the best size for a 'warm' L24, with 2.5" mandrel bent stainless pipe, resonator and rear sports muffler. He said he has no idea why anybody uses two pipes from the header back, and that it is not only a waste of time and money, but its twice the weight. The pricing was very competitive for all of this, and he suggested ceramic coating as well. He also added that he used to personally own a 240Z with L26 in it. He said he has a very good understanding of Z engines and how to make them go (from an exhaust perspective). In a word guys, THANKS for your contributions to this thread, its been an important lesson. Moral of the story ... I should have just listened to Lurch in the first place! Cheers all. Adam
luvemfast Posted August 28, 2010 Posted August 28, 2010 Oh great Adam, now the bugger is going to think he's right even more tha normal. If that's humanly possible. Some say that he is right......... Always. All we know, is he's called Lurch
PZG302 Posted August 29, 2010 Posted August 29, 2010 Adam, Good to see it will be sorted. My system that Andy built is still going strong after over 15 years. Mine would be totally unsuitable for you, measured it 6yesterday afternoon whilst the car was on stands for an oil change. I have a 6-3-1 system with the primaries at 2" OD and the secondaries at 1 3/4" OD. lengths not sure as I was running out of light and didn't have a piece of string handy, plus I don't like burns The extractors then go into a 3" pipe that has a reducer, and then back to 3" to get the gases through faster, then into a muffler and then a 90 degree turn and exits out the right hand side at the back of the door. Is fun when someone is talking to you aor standing next to the car when you are warming it up and give the throttle a bigger than normal blip and let the .5m flame hit their ankle. Andy does know his stuff, most of the good race cars of most categories at state level from western Sydney have or have had a Penrith Muffler Man system at some stage.
C.A.R. Posted August 29, 2010 Posted August 29, 2010 I think this thread as run it course - thanks everyone for your input Locked.
