Well hopefully in the next few weeks I will be getting a Z. Fingers crossed.

Now more than likely the car will not be a runner.

I am a bit concerned about towing the car home.

After doing a bit of research I  have worked out that my car a Mazda CX7 has a towing capacity of 1600kg braked (Low for and SUV I think).

A Z weighs 1200 KG and Trailer 800KG tare A total of 2000KG I'm thinking this is pushing the boundaries a bit far.

Has any one got any thoughts on other ways of getting the car home or other ways you have achieved it. I was thinking flatbed but I think that could be pricey..

Thanks

Matt

Borrow a bigger car from someone??

Dedpending how far you are moving it, you might be surprised at the price from a local tow mob.  If they do accident tows (reg TOW???)  they might be pricey, but a trade tow mob (reg TT ????) might be reasonable.

Europecar have falcon utes in their fleet. If they have the right tow bar,  heavy duty, they are rated to tow at 2300kg, or 1600kg for the standard tow bar.

Depending on how far you need to go, and where, the CX7 would probably cope. I wouldn't cross the range west of Sydney or Brisbane with that set up, but a run for few suburbs would be OK asl long as you're sensible and allow for the idiots.

I would thin about an hour away on a freeway , So it is a biggish drive!

Your call obviously, but if it was me, and it would depend on a lot that I can't know being up north, I would probably do the trip as long as there are no real hills to worry about and the traffic around me would be fairly light, but I have done some dodgy towing in the past, both through ignorance and taking a well educated guess.

If you were in brisbane I'd offer to tow it for you for the cost of fuel and a couple of beers for time.  ;D But that far away, I don't think it would be the economic option.

You are a good man thanks

Anyone got a suggestion for a decent transport company that will do shorter trips.

I was looking at one down the coast. But they were asking a bit much.

So still looking.

Still not sure what end to go for a heap inexpensive or save a bit more cash and get something a little better :-\

Depends on what you're looking for. If you want to do rust repairs, then buy a cheaper one, but be prepared to fork out for a decent welder and cutting tools, plus a decent compressor if you're going to spray what you've cut out. Or then send it to a professional to get it sprayed.

Depends if you want a project or one you can drive straight off.. and if you can put up with driving around in a cheaper one which may have rust popping through the paint.

Matt,

I have a Falcon with a towbar and should be able to help tow if we can work out timings that suit.  I towed my Zed on a trailer up and down the freeway a number of times

Do you have a trailer to tow the car (or one that you can borrow)?

If not then I would definitely consider the flat bed truck.

I have towed my car on a flat bed several times over the last couple of years. For a 20-30minute trip it generally costs me $88.

Most mobs will do you a quote before hand so you can at least consider the cost.

No would have to hire one. I think it was around that much to hire.

Flat bed is a good option.

Thanks

Yeah I have found it a pretty reasonable option.

Even if it is double that (I.E. you said an hour trip), it is still easier then picking up trailer, worrying about your tie downs and towing etc.

At least with a flatbed you don't have to worry about it getting home in one piece.

First time a towed a tandem with a zed on it with a R31 Skyline (with piss poor brakes from standard) I was amazed with the stupidity of other drivers when it came to traffic lights; you leave a nice gap to have room to come to a stop and these clever people change lanes to get in front of you reducing the limited distance you had. One stage I was ready to slam into the arse of the car in front. If you do decide to tow, borrow a 4WD at least with a braked trailer; at least make it safe.

Thanks Guys

Thinking a flatbed will be the way to go.
