luvdemzeds Posted July 27, 2010 Posted July 27, 2010 hi,could anybody tell me which brake rotor is used for a R31 rear disc conversion,on a 26o2+2? There seems to be a few that have been mentioned, but nothing to say which is the best rotor to use, with the least amount of engineering reqd. Thanks in advance. Quote
C.A.R. Posted July 27, 2010 Posted July 27, 2010 The standard R31 Skyline Rotor is a bolt on with no modifications required. Get a slotted set too Quote
. Posted July 27, 2010 Posted July 27, 2010 just as a matter of interest. What sort of performance increase would you expect from a slotted disc compared to the standard disc of the same dimensions? Quote
C.A.R. Posted July 27, 2010 Posted July 27, 2010 On the road - probably SFA. On the track, it just helps to de-gas the pad face to help maintain pad consistency. Quote
PZG302 Posted July 27, 2010 Posted July 27, 2010 On the road - probably SFA. On the track, it just helps to de-gas the pad face to help maintain pad consistency. And only really worth doing on the front if at all. There isn't much difference in performance between slotted or standard for Zeds. The biggest problem we can have id to overbrake the car. I was looking at getting new calipers to fix the brake problem I have, but at the moment it looks like I can get away with rebuilding my calipers, saves me some big dollars and fabrication work. The new calipers were going to be Wilwood Superlites, a lot bigger than the Dynalites I currently run and will be getting repaired. The rotors with the bigger caliper were going to be a 298mm Alsa rotor, that was vented only. The current rotors I use are standard TP Magna rotors, about 270mm in diameter and depending on cost I usually get standard vented, though currently trying slotted to see what difference it will make to overall performance. With the slotted rotors and my usual carbon metallic pad they make no real difference in performance or wear. Having said that the car weighs 960kg, so is relatively light compared to other categories where slotted rotors are a must, along with the biggest caliper and most number of pistons you can afford. dazzed Posted July 27, 2010 Posted July 27, 2010 I found slotting the rotors made a huge difference on my zed . the rotors have been on the car for yonks and only starting to look like they might need grinding, just gave the brakes more pedal feel and bite Quote
KatoKid Posted July 27, 2010 Posted July 27, 2010 Ive looked and searched everywhere but cant find the post on the pics and mods required for the R31 caliper mounting bracket. Can anyone help, Ive seen them somewhere but for the life of me cant find them now? Thanks. David Quote
RB30X Posted July 28, 2010 Posted July 28, 2010 There is some here: http://www.viczcar.com/forum/index.php/topic,4425.120.html Quote
KatoKid Posted July 28, 2010 Posted July 28, 2010 That's the one!!! Any wonder I couldn't find it. +1 for the sticky Lurch or Dimitri. Quote
C.A.R. Posted July 28, 2010 Posted July 28, 2010 If someone wants the coversion done & can get some rear struts, R31 calipers, brackets & rotors to me, i'll do the conversion for FREE. I'll then post up tutourial on how to do it. Quote
260DET Posted July 30, 2010 Posted July 30, 2010 People are going to hate me but that conversion is sooo last century. It is convenient and easy to service but for braking performance no better than ye olde drumses. By current standards something like a 300mm minimum diameter rotor would be appropriate, we are driving performance cars after all Quote
garvice Posted July 30, 2010 Posted July 30, 2010 Richard, I seem to remember you saying, I didn't bother using slotted rotors because you really don't need them on the rear of an S30. Now your saying you need bigger discs? P.S. Just giving you a hard time mate, I couldn't agree with you more, the bigger the better, if there is too much brakes then you just push you foot less. BobsYourUncle Posted July 30, 2010 Posted July 30, 2010 There do seem to be a lot of options for rear (and front I guess) conversions - are there any resources anywhere that compare the choices, pros and cons etc? Quote
Riceburner Posted July 30, 2010 Posted July 30, 2010 300mm on the rear I did this mod years ago and still ran standard front brakes, it was a big improvement over the drums. Only problem it's a pain in the ring to change pads, winding the pistons in sucks and unless you mount them at 12o'clock they need to be removed to bleed. Thinking of changing my pads makes me wana cry :'( hehe Quote
