Help anyone? I started my 240z up today to hear an awful ratlle at idle. it's an l28, checke vavle clearances, rockers, springs, removed plugs not damaged, oil pressure is fine. When i bring revs above 1500 noise dissapears  :o I looked at the chain and sprocket seem ok, but the chain guide on the passenger side seems to move approx 10mm in and theres some wipe makes on the rocker cover wear chain runs? Any help appreciated

Do Not Start again. Post up a pic or video of the movement. Sounds like the timing chain tensioner is worn or the chain guide has come loose.

I was thinking the same thing, I didn't think  the guides should move at all but the top of passenger side can be pushed in and out 10mm easily with a screw driver. Chain seems to be tight on The drivers side with the tensioner..... Lucky i just drove home yesterday, 2hrs at 110kph  :o

Far out, go get a Lottery ticket now. So the bolts have come loose. Looks like get the whole lot and replace. Can be done while still in the car but it's a pain.

OFF TOPIC, where did you get you radiator from Gareth?

Haven't done it before but should be fairly straight foward, just a pain in the a@#e considering i had it stripped down a few days ago. Any tips, traps for young players?  :)

Hunter, it's from evilbay, 3row with shrowd and twin thermos, great quality and works fantastic, thermo switch in top hose fans on at 85 of at 80.

I'm sure many will have helpful suggestions from here. You can loosen the sump and leave just the rear bolts in place (loose) to avoid having to replace the sump gasket but the sump can be removed without taking out the engine. Clean surfaces are vital on the timing cover and a dob of sump gasket goo on the four corners (where the top of the block meets the head and the sump meets the block)

Also make sure you don't catch the Head Gasket as you refit the timing cover.

This is all so much easier to do with the engine out of the car but it can be done while in the car just make sure you have a clear day to do it.

Do you have a manual?

Oh and check the timing cover for corrosion too.

Gareth, check your harmonic balancer...could be loose! Try to rotate it by hand and check for play.

I got mine from bursons.

Not sure about Oz but here in NZ the after market places do a kit but.......they are from China and the chain is just ok-ish I would recommend a Japanese chain any day and if the engine is to see any performance then I would not run a non Japanese unit period. You can get a good Japanese chain/kit from Nissan or Stewart Wilkins Motorsport
