Ah thats it, there it's been mentioned in a forum so must be true!  :o

Good Luck with it. Hmmm...I'd be keen to find soemthing like that and just stick it under a tarp until time allows for some attention on it.

I find it really interesting that it has the plastic plugs on the fenders where the side view mirrors would be mounted in Japan, but maybe didn't cut it for our regulations.  First I've ever seen it on a 240Z.  Is this the norm for the earliest Z?  They are pretty common for 1600 and 200B's.

Id heard that in SA fender mirrors are illegal. compliance with this would mean removal and plugging. Dont know how common fender mirrors on australian zeds are, but i would like to know as well. I dont have plugs but i have patches on both side that sit where the mirrors would have.

I've seen some early 71 240z's with the Fender mirrors like those in Japan. So who knows maybe this Z had them but someone plugged them up or maybe cars in SA as you say couldn't have them so Nissan decided to stop fitting them on later model Z's in the Australian market.

If it already has the holes for them I'd put them in again, but that's just me.

It seems that all really early Z's came form Japan with fender mirrors, or at least holes for them. Dealers handled this in various ways, some were left with fender mirrors (eg #00004), some got plugs, as shown in this thread, and some were send off to the panel shop, had a bit of metal welded underneath, filled and repainted.

Regarding illegality of fender mirrors in SA.

back in the 70 and 71 weren't illegal

I had a chat with one of the senior guys at Nissan.

I asked about fender mirrors on 240z.

His reply was the early all early ones came with fender.

But were very unpopular.

Some customers didn't care some did. Like mr. C said they had options depending on customer. Some were fine with no extra cost to relocate to the doors and plugs on fenders.

The ones that didn't like that option for xtra cost they would plate it under and respray the guards.

So that mystery is solved.

Though I think second half of 71 ADR plates started to appear and were in force Jan 72. Hence all early z don't have the ADR plate no polution gear etc...

I enquired about this if car is pre 1/72 and cars without ADR plate u can legaly do few extra things like have a turbo timer.

U can download the ADR PDF from the transport mob that states what each ADR number means

in sa anyway there is also modification guideline what u allowed and what not to do. I'll try dig it out again and post links

Back to my 227

sent email to my Nissan spare parts guru with list of parts I will need. So be interesting to see what's available and how much it is.

As for location of mirrors I do want to install on fenders just not sure if jdm or the flappy chrome ones.

Mine has an ADR plate and its dated 4/71. The original guards have had steel plates welded over the fender mirror holes.
