hi all,

just thought i'd join up and read some general banter and get some ideas about these great cars before i get my hands on a original 240z... (masive project car).

always been a fan but never had the oppertunity to own one.

i am a big muscle car fan however i am undecided about restoring this great beast to its glory or to just go all out and build a muscle car... general opinions??

anyway you have a great site here and i'm sure i'll get some good information and some great contacts out of it.

Thanks Steve.

Hi Scubasteve (funny name by the way),

Welcome to the site. Do you mean turning the 240z into a muscle car as in putting a V8 in it? Or restoring her to former glory? I personally like them original but that's just me.

So have you got your hands on 1 now? Or looking for a project?

I think you'll find quite a few people are seeking a 240z these days. All the best with it.

Mate, welcome. You can always kill two birds with one stone and build a muscle car from a zed. Just don't do it to an perfectly straight car or my eyes will water. Oh and by the way if you are new to zeds don't forget that there are 2 seater 260z as well. So if it was the 2 seater shape you are after don't limit yourself to the 240z. Good luck

ha, thanks. yeah was thinkin about the v8 conversion, just toying wuth some ideas at the moment. everyone seems to be doing it tho... are most original parts hard to come by these days?

well i she's not exactly sitting in my shed at the moment however it is just a matter of cleaning the shed and organising a car trailer to pick her up....so nearly!!!

welcome to the nuthouse.

mate your car, build what u be happy with and what u want.

theres plenty of stockies around here for the trailers and museums  ;D

its not like its only 500 of these things made in the world.  lot more than that..

though if not planning to keep it for long than maybe be better play it safe and have it somewhat original make it at least easier to sell afterwards.

if u dont plan to sell it go wild at least fullfill your dream.

even if they do reach some extra collectable level even the modified ones will get a bit of a kick in its value.

i personally like modded and suped up cars. but there are people that dont. so u get a mixed bunch responding to your question and u end up at the same point where u started.

to help u a bit without being biased:

Look at the car.

Has it got original matching number engine?

Is the interior mostly complete in reasonable condition and no mods ie hard to find items in suprisingly good condition?

is it fairly rust free ie structural and hard to repair areas (doors and guards bonnet no biggie)?

anythign else special about it ie low number chasis, wierd factory options ie fender mirrors vertical demister, stainless headlight covers etc...?

if u got YES to about 50% of those questions i would definetly say rebuild to stock and leave it stock.

otherwise if it has an l26 or l28 its allready modded even though at glance u cant notice.

rusty cars or ones with sunroofs can be repaired but it will chew most of your funds and u run dry before u know it chasing those hard to get parts.

chasing correct parts it can be very exy and time consuming.

now for the biased part  :P:

for about same $$$ or less u can build a road warrior that will eat cars in the price tag 10time of your z. it will eat your bellowed muscle cars in straight line and in the twisty stuff.

i like muscle cars too but mostly for their toughness and sound that comes at the back of it.problem is they are expensive to buy and modify unlike our Z at this time. paying 1k for rusty Z is nothing compared to paying 10k for equivalent rust box thats made in USA and guess what they still modify them.

Put a V8 in it!   ;D

I agree put a V8 in it if your after the muscle car sound/thing LS1 are a good option in my mind if I was going to V8 mine its what I would consider they are cheapish and still newish, saw a LS1 for sale for 800 bucks not to long ago, though a lot of mods would need to be done for it all if its what your after do it. Your options are endless but if your after the muscle car thing than "Never late in a V8".

I'm very proud to have mine original.  It sits funny without sport springs and the rims are old but I get a lot of looks.  I enjoy it as a 6, and its quicker off the line than many roadgoing v8's.  I'm not sure that I'd go swap then just for the sound.  Flat 6 still sounds ok. With a conversion it can be pricey and some run into the trouble of value losses.  I think the market for a v8 Datto is not so big here.  If you go looking for a Z you will be looking for one as close to original.  So yeah, that's me trying to be persuasive without saying that a v8 swap in a Datto is just sacrilegious. :P

I'm all for the original style Z also as mine is, but seems this guy wants a muscle type car hence why i said maybe look to LS1, I also agree it seems to be more popular with doing skyline engine converging rather than V8. i still think  if you want a muscle car, get a torana or camaro or falcon? all look good in the 70's to me, nice v8's sound great with the right set ups. and some wont set you back anymore than 10k, just what I would personally do, also Quandary I love the sound of my straight 6 to, turns heads most people think its a v8 "if they have no clue about 240z"
