Another quick up date, yes things are still moving along, with the body work taking longer than expected, Zack the beater is also doing another mates hotrod and building his Gemini rally car so one day a fortnight is about all I get him for. Most of the bodywork is done except for a hard to see dent in the bottom of the drivers door and the back panel under the bumper which is a real mess. One good thing is that I pulled out the fuel tank so he could get access to the rear panel and found 20l's of genuine dark green, high lead 2001 Avgas, not much good for anything with an engine I know, but I was thinking of making it into aftershave, drop me a PM if you want to smell like a real man, trust me the ladies love it....

I've also been busy building the new L20 for my 1600, which has been a real charicter building exercise, but is together and in the car. If you like L series engine, and lets face it who doesn't, you might like the head I've fitted, It's been 'downdrafted' ie the inlet ports have been welded up and raised about 10mm and now angle down ono the top of the valves and a new inlet manifold was cast up to suit. Around 10-12 were built by a guy called John Brookfeild who was also involved with Repco Brabham, Bob Jane racing and the Phil Irvine Holden heads. Hopefully we'll have it on the dyno next week to see if it's any good..... There are several other way's of doing it that I've seen, and might, if it works, be worth trying it on an L6...

Anyway back to the Zee, I've finalised the engine spec and hope will start on it real soon, I've got to get the clutch and balancer before to much longer, then we will be under way. I've now got the throttle bodies, manifold and a Motec M48 to run the whole shebang, just got to get the new fuel pump's, surge tank and smaller injectors and the fuel side will be ready to go. So it is coming together......

Photo's....the L4 head with gaskit to get an idea of what I was on about, and the fancy manifold and the third is typically what we were dealing with! $100's worth of Helicoils in this baby!! stay away from old race engines!!

Looking sweet..I'm interested how you are going to solve the manifold gasket issue..looks like heaps of fun! Love the headers too

Go the Rat!  Can't wait to find out how it goes.  At least now you'll have some time to get stuck back into the Z.  What are you going to do when the Z's finished though?  Can't drive two cars at once  8)

Cheers, Hillclimb no worries Mick, keep an eye on the web site for an entry, they haven't opened yet, the clubday at Symmons is on the 7th of November as well. It will be the battle of the Zeds at Highcleare, V8 monster Vs Turbo terror......

As for the Rat, I've still got the long springs, sump guard, mud flaps and 15 inch gravel tyres off the old shell, and these gravel hillclimbs are starting to become popular.

As for a gasket Dimitri, We just cut a couple out of gasket material, and packed it up to the header level with sliced up washers, works great. There's an extra couple of studs to hold the manifold on which help's a heap.

LOL, I'd go broke!! Theres a fair difference between putting an engine together with someone skilled looking over your shoulder and building a motor!!

My golden rule is never trust a dyno figure!! The quarter mile this weekend and Symmon the next will be the real test.

Found some photo's of a very well known Zed down here, owned and very well driven by 'Grunge' Reader who lives in the North of the state. The car has just been sold to a guy with a huge car collection, so we might not see it again in action.  The gravel photo was taken in 1990 and the Hillclimb shot is 2005 Tassie Hillclimb championships. It was always a good looking jigger.

Hopefully this works? It's a clip from the hillclimb last Sat, that Mick and I competed in, I'm in the boxey blue Datsun not the sporty red Datsun, but it gives you an idea. The next event here is mid Feb next year, right in the middle of the Zed tour of Tas.

Bloody oath that is a high speed hillclimb!  The rat sure hops into it for a 2ltr.  No wonder Kelvins beast sets the pace.  Camera on the roof does look trick, I might have to give it a go.

Good clip - that's a fast hillclimb too.

Question though: Why is Balldrick from 'Blackadder' driving your 1600?

I want to know why he wasn't wearing the glasses when he navigated for me......

What do you think big red will do up there?  You might aswell just enter under 3 litre aswell in the rat.  I was just looking at the results and you already beat the quickest class C car by over 3 seconds!!!

LOL Baldrick does race a Datsun 1600 in Tasmania, but it's not me! He's a lot more off the show than I am. I was growing the whiskers for that George Clooney/Shane Bond Scruffy look....didn't work? I really should by a full face helmet. As for the glasses, i'm not that keen to see what is going on out the window when navagating!! mind you Scando you were a lot less scary than my usual rides!! I prom I'll wear them next time....

My Zed held the record there for a while in the mid 90's with Roger driving, so the plan's to get it back!! Phill H in the BMW 325 (should be 329!) holds it at the moment. I've already been feeding Phil a lot of BS, told him I has going to use a 68 degree cam, Quadrajet carb, 240K box and atf in the shock's, he's real worried!!

I dragged Zack back up to the ranch on Sat, and we got a heap done. There only the back panel under the rear bumper to do, as far a major body work goes. It's by far the worst part of the car, man it's had some hit's!! well at least they were having a go and went in backwards!

G'day everyone, It's been a fair while since my last 'report' but we are still moving ahead with the old girl, alas a bit more slowly than I hoped, due to a very big 2010 and 2011. I've put the Panel beater under the pump lately and he is back into it, with most of the car in undercoat/guide coat and the engine has been away at a South Aust health farm for wayward L series...I should come back very fit and healthy.

A couple of mates are away watching or competing in Rally Oz this weekend and I keep getting photos sms'd to me...you should be here!! So I dragged out my old photo albums and thought I would share a few photo's of Zed's in action from years past. Look away if you think Zeds should only be used as Show cars or popping down to the Cafe for a coffee in a tumbler this is what it's really all about!! You might reconise some of the below...

LOL yeah, it went over in Feb his year, I kept getting phone call's...this is no good, this is no good and the price of scrap alum is...

We've ended up using the block, crank and adj cam wheel off the old engine. Everything is ready to go together, just waiting on the head to be finished.

I'll be doing a good deal on a block girdle, ported P90a head and triple Weber inlet manifold(s) soon if your interested...

The pic's of the black Zed are his son Dave in action at the Rally of Canberra, when he won the ARC Jr Challange, beating Roger, prompting him to buy my car..

I've never picked it before, but I'd say the silver car in the top group and the green car in the 2nd group are the same car, just a coat of paint, the cage and body kit look the same, the photos are around 5 years apart. The other 3 in the top group are all from Tassie with the bottom one still being raced/Tarmac rallied (It's red now with Rota's) and the white one is locked away in a shed, hopefully we will see it in action again soon.

OK heres some more,

The red one is the brown on mentioned above, I took this at Symmons last year. The blue Zed is local legend Duck Stevens, hopefully, again, we will see this car in action again soon. The white one is the same car as above but in Targa not Rally Tas..

Well spotted pal, it's a good looking Zed! I really like the rims and for 1994 it looks 'up to date' now. I looked up the race number in the big Targa book and it was driven by Ian Messner and DNF'd which is a shame, anybody out the know him?

I cant find the action Shot's of Shrek at TWP your brother took but heres a couple of cool photo's from '09. plus one from Rally Tas 07, a very tidy early girl.

LOL, now come on, I bit my tongue about your comments about poor old Albert the other day, and didn't start a rumour about the VG30 being a copy of 911 engine, just with a bit more vee, he he. Anyway, I think I proved my point earlier on this year when we beat them in a dirty old HQ Holden with 8 inch rims and a blown LSD, you would of loved it, they were all very upset!!

I'm not the guy to do it, but I do know a couple of blokes who could....
