acf321 Posted April 26, 2009 Posted April 26, 2009 Hi all .. pulling the old girl apart at the weekend I realised that almost every screw and nut and bolt needs replacing .. Aside from salvaging some and replating.. most are just too old and worn. Has anyone found this, and if so where are you getting replacements? I tried Warren for one or two, but mostly even that stuff is 35+ yrs old ... So where to from here Hopefully not Bunnings !!! Is there a screw / bolt / nut seller associated with the panel shop industry that can get anything? In most cases the replacements need not be OEM, but must be the right style with cadmium or yellow zinc coating. Keen to hear where to go for this stuff. Cheers Quote
fufu Posted April 26, 2009 Posted April 26, 2009 coventry fasteners or bolt vendors like those. Your best bet and best alternatives would be there. Bunnings would blow a hole in your wallet plus another hole in the money tree. *edit* coventry fasteners are for common bolts, nuts and washers. You'll understand when you get there... think of a library but for bolts, nuts and washers. Quote
C.A.R. Posted April 26, 2009 Posted April 26, 2009 Zedman240 (Dimitri) works for Convertry Fastners... Quote
acf321 Posted April 27, 2009 Author Posted April 27, 2009 thanks guys .. much appreciated. Wonder what others have done when restoring these things?? Quote
maddos Posted April 27, 2009 Posted April 27, 2009 I'm lucky that my company deals in underwater equipment. I ended up replacing a lot of the standard bolts with stainless ones. Can be an expensive exercise if you don't have trade discount but at least know they aren't going to rust on you. BTW that heading will be like a red rag to a bull for Jane. Quote
Moderators Zedman240® Posted April 27, 2009 Moderators Posted April 27, 2009 Zedman240 (Dimitri) works for Convertry Fastners... Its actually Dafra Fasteners... I'm a bit unsure about using too many stainless fasteners going into steel/zinc steel.. There may be an issue of accelerated corrosion of disimilar metals. But don't quote me on that.. Quote

acf321 Posted April 27, 2009 Author Posted April 27, 2009 Thanks Pauly ,,, sure it wasn't the header that dragged you in?? So I guess you go down there on a Saturday morning with a ice-cream bucket of bolts and say; "I need three of these, four of these, and seven of these"?? Sounds just what the Doctor ordered mate ... Thanks again. Just so you know, the Brown Hornet will be shipped off to the doctor this weekend for likely very very long surgery... Still deciding on colours!. Quote
acf321 Posted April 27, 2009 Author Posted April 27, 2009 Hey Pauly .. just called the Cedray blokes and told them I am coming down with a bucket of bolts (no not a rusty old Datsun) but the real thing.. They said.. yep... bring them down and we can replace new for old for almost everything. They're open on Saturdays from 7.00am until 11.00am. They can do re-plating of anything as well .. Just what I need at the moment !! Just try finding those screws that hold in the 1/4 windows in or the ones that hold the thingamyjigs to the whatchacallits!!!!!!! Quote
Mr240z Posted April 27, 2009 Posted April 27, 2009 See Adam, Don't listen to these blokes....I am good for something... As for .. thingamyjigs to the whatchacallits!!!!!!! (maybe Cedray as well) You might have to get a list together and put in a order from Blackdragon.. As for Cedray's they go out there way to help.. Quote
. Posted April 27, 2009 Posted April 27, 2009 Guys I used to be an electroplater 22 years ago (go I feel old). Anyway zinc or cadmium are best. This is because they are soft metals. The corrosion process hits the plating first before the steel. It is the typical sacrificial anode scenario. Because it is the anode principle it doesn't even have to be a complete coat of all steel in the area. What I mean is that if you take a steel area and screw a plated bolt or screw into the steel the plating will oxidise. That process will actually slow the oxidisation of the whole steel area. Not by much mind you, but the prinicple increases with the amount of anode attached. I'm not suggesting that you ignore other forms of rust protection. But I would watch your plated parts. When they are getting to the point where they nolonger have a good coat its a warning to have them plated again. If you do replace all your zinc plated parts with Stainless then I'd highly recommend attaching an actual lump of zinc somewhere. You can pick them up from a boat store for a few dollars. Quote
Zednalong Posted May 17, 2009 Posted May 17, 2009 Hi acf321 I am presently working on having a supply of the assorted genuine cad plated as per original metric bolts available through my web site which I will be able to dispatch nationally to those in need. There is nothing worse than having to change spanners when you get to the non metric, which is the only type sold through most hardware stores and bolt bars. I will keep you informed on progress. Sounds awesome Len, I've been looking for a way to replace all the bolts on a Zed and as you say nothing worse than having to switch to non-metric. If you can get a kit together for all OEM bolts I would definitely buy that! Quote
Moderators Zedman240® Posted May 18, 2009 Moderators Posted May 18, 2009 That would be great Len, even at the Rivet/Nutsert place I work at, for example trying to find a M8 nut with a 12mm spanner size is very hard. Fine metric bolts are another not so hard item but annoying when you don't have them there and then! Studs are even more fun. Quote
acf321 Posted May 18, 2009 Author Posted May 18, 2009 Len, the wold needs more people like you!!! What is the name of your site for me to add to my favourites? Cheers Adam Quote
