I'm about to buy some por15 for my z and was wondering has anyone here used it on the outside as well so basically the entire car?

I have the greeny coloured Por15 painted in my engine bay, that Lou applied before he sold me the car.

Apprears to have adhered well...

What i initially planned on doing Lurch was painting the inside, underside and engine bay with por15 but was wondering if it was worth painting the outside for rust prevention also, but from the research I've just done a lot of people say epoxy on top of clean metal is just as good?

I've had the shell bead blasted but I've left it in bare metal for about 5 weeks now so rust spots are starting to reappear everywhere, so I've started hitting the car with k&h rust dissolver to keep it in check before I decide what to do, I know I could paint straight over this with the por15 but I'd rather have the metal clean first, did i just answer my question I think i am rambling.

Panelbeaters/car painters usually don't like recommend POR 15. I think it is due to the following reasons.

 

1. Thick = hard on good paint guns

2. Thick = hard to get off for repairs

 

I would ask around and get more feedback the panelbeaters/car painters I know say don't use it.

Wipe the car down with fertan follow the directions for prep and blow it over with a good epoxy primer as youve noted

For external surfaces I find acrylic is very easy and gives a good result.  I've sprayed up 3 cars out in the open and they have all come up very nicely.  Acrylic is very forgiving for the DIY'er, very easy to fix if you make a mistake or get a run and you can get a good finish straight of the gun if you thin out the final top coats. 

 

I use POR15 as much as possible on the inside bits.  Remember that the ordinary stuff (which is expensive enough) is not UV stable and will yellow if exposed.  I brush it on, but with home equipment won't ever be spraying it.  It's hard enough to get it off your skin, let alone your lungs 

 

I haven't got to spraying yet on the Z, still doing rust work.  If you look in my project thread you'll see where I've por'd the inside of the front guards.

Hey Mossy,

I don't think you'll find any paint savvy people who would recommend POR15 for your external panels.  One of the reasons being that to get the surface of the POR15 prepped to recieve primer/topcoat you would have to sand the crap out of it to get a flat paintable surface which would remove much of what you put on. secondly you CAN NOT apply any filler over POR15 you must have a bare metal substrate for adhesion without shrinkage.  In essence if you have your metal prepped right with a 2 pac etch, then primed/putty/primed topcoat/clear, moisture will be unable to penetrate to the substrate to allow sweating and rust to develop.  remember the paint that we have these days is far superior to the semi porous stuff that our cars were painted with 30+ years ago so much more able to protect the metal beneath.

Get it in some good epoxy etch primer as soon as possible you're prep work will be pointless otherwise, as for the POR-15 if you plan to paint over it then don't let it cure, just before it goes off you need to start painting it other. As Rev said it's not easy, although I have been told by some it's near impossible for paint to stick once it's cured.

I have never heard of fertan before, on my hood and hatch I used rust dissolver and austech rust convertor which turns the panel a bluey black, my stepdad who has been a painter, panel beater for over 30 years just uses an epoxy over clean metal and tectyl's everything.

 

I was confident the rust wouldn't appear after I blasted, for the first probably 3 weeks it was fine its only the last few its started to pop up and I chemically stripped the door jambs and roof myself before blasting, it was bare metal for around 8 months in my garage and not one bit of rust

Well having blasted my zed back in 2001/2002 xmas/new years then covering it in a good 2 pac epoxy primer that same day I can say it has been sitting this condition for over 8 years now and it is still the same ie not rust etc and I can tell you that 7/8 years is long enough for it to be in primer so the top coat has now been purchased and I hope to have this on the body paint and complete in the next few months.

 

So I say as others have stated get a good epoxy primer and let loose - my panelbeater will not let me use POR-15 on my zed.

NZeder I've been doing a lot of reading mainly on the net tonight and i don't think I'm going with the por now, looks like epoxy is the go.

 

I've also been looking at fertan, I couldn't really find if anyone used it on clean metal or if its worth using on my application. I've been using a rust dissolver to get rid of the rust spots so I'm wondering if that and an epoxy is all I need?

Not sure what you have in Melbourne, go to a largish Mitre 10 or Bunnings hardware store

Found it at Bursons. Those that have used it did you coat all your whole car or just the rust prone areas and did you prepsol over the fertan when you were ready for paint?
