Sorry to hear of your trauma mate.  The next step will be finding a shop that is willing to do restoration work.  Don't worry too much as Shannons should understand it costs more for classics but you can't stop there either.  If you want it to be something you are happy to continue with it needs to be a shop that is not only willing but HAPPY and ABLE to work on your car - and that without fillling the dents with plastic filler and sanding it off.  Perseverance is required.  Maybe try shops that sponsor classic car clubs (not just zeds).

Further to the rants on injustice, my father has been visiting the Bugatti Mueseum in Mulhouse France and tells of the most spectacular cars as far as he can see but that it was at threat of destruction by the owners' (the brothers Schlumpf) textile empire employees who were on strike in protest over the abuse of power and wealth (quite rightly so) that resulted in the collection.  The strife escalated to storming the converted textile mill that housed the collection but after breaking a couple of windows and a small fire sense and awe prevailed with the collection becoming a public mueseum after much wrangling.  Just goes to show that sense and appreciation can prevail - even among a mob of frenchmen!

Go and see Paul at Rankins Restorations in Malvern St Bayswater ...........Paul will be happy to help (tell him I sent you) 9729 0622, Rankins specialise in old stuff (Alfas mostly but they have done a few Zeds and Roadsters) so they know how to treat rust !!

They have my Zed in the shop at the moment for an engine bay repaint and another 240 in for a total refurb .

Thanks Alan, I gave Rankins a call and am going down tomorrow to get a quote, I'll let you guys know what happens.  Does anyone know if insurance companies let you do the repairs yourself?

Sorry to hear that your car is damaged buddy. As for reparing the damage yourself, it usually states that it has to be an "approved" repairer. That may include you.

Rev My understanding is that Shannon will let you pick your repair. If not do as the Romans do and complane till they come around to your way of thinking

good luck  :D

I beleive you can take a cheque equivalent to the cost of an approved quote and do what you want with it.

I went down to Rankins last year to talk about finishing off the paint work of my Z. It wasnt cheap but the paint on a couple of the Alfa's outside looked very nice. Keep us posted how you go.

i've gotten a couple of cash settlements from insurance companies (always the person at fault's company, never my own) on cars i didn't care about, and replacements were easily obtainable from a wrecker for alot less - but i'm not sure how your actual insurance company would feel about it as you are not meant to be driving the car around with any damage on it etc.

Normally the cash settlement they offer is a bit lower than the average of the quotes you obtain, so discard any low ballers ;)

I will happily vouch for the quality of Paul Rankins work.... I have a lot to do with some of the Alfas that come out of Pauls booth, and the quality of the paintjobs is always flawless.  Smooth as glass, and never the tiniest dent or imperfection in any panel.  Hence the reason my GTV6 will be heading there when its time to finally bite the bullet and derust it.  He sprayed my engine bay while I had it empty for the motor conversion, and even though its only an engine bay, it makes the outside of the car look like it was painted with a roller and never rubbed back.

hmmmm Im curious, I went to school with a guy called Paul Rankin who loved panel beating and he was a top-gun sprayer by the time he was 20..wonder if its the same guy  ???....would  Paul be about 39-40 in age now, brownish hair , average height & build ???

Im taking my wifes Alfa to get some quotes tomorrow morning (also thru Shannons)...some low life delivery driver reversed into it and mangled the boot & bumper....nobody saw it but we worked out it would have been a van or pantech truck with bars on the back...scum. >:(

Hey Rev, what news of your zed?

I've been thinking of you a few times and wonder how things have progressed in the last couple of months.

Thanks for your thoughts.  Shannons were nothing short of a nightmare and I finally agreed to a very reduced amount to fix the car...which I haven't got to yet as i'm trying to get the other one finished.

Awesome progress in almost no time must feel very satisfying.

Sad Shannons let you down, they were great with my last repairs even upgraded it to a full resto!
