XRQTR Posted January 17, 2009 Posted January 17, 2009 Anyone needing rust repair work as well as sand blasting done it looks like I may be able to help you soon. The finance for the new truck fell through and I am looking at starting up a resto/rust repair shop with a friend, he is the one doing all the welding LOL, but if anyone needs something done let me know. I'll keep you informed of when and exactly where as at the moment we have an option of either Werribee or Geelong as a base, once a decision has been made I can then start booking jobs in, an approximate start date though is for early to mid March. We will be offering a full service from small sand blasting jobs right through to full turn key restorations, no matter what your budget we can work out a good deal, we already have interest from a few hot rodders and some Dodge/Chrysler guys for various jobs. We will also have a low bake down draught spray booth in the coming months, it currently has a rear/door draught set up that is suffcient for priming and prepping as well as using a blast room. Mig welding, plasma cutting, re plating, re flooring, panel fabrication will be done through an outside source but will of course be an added service for hard to find replacement panels. So for now I thought I'd just give you all a heads up, post any questions you have here or pm me and as soon as things start moving I'll let you all know. Thanks Quote
zr240 Posted January 17, 2009 Posted January 17, 2009 Hey Just wouldering what sort of cost to sandblast a old TVR chassis (they are a bit like a spaceframe so just steal tubes etc) Thanks Ash Quote
XRQTR Posted January 18, 2009 Author Posted January 18, 2009 We haven't actually set any prices as yet, that's this weeks meeting LOL sorry, but suffice to say we will try to beat any genuine quotes. So in saying that what other quotes/prices have you already got?? Quote
zr240 Posted January 18, 2009 Posted January 18, 2009 Havent got any yet as its a project my Dad and I are planing to start in the next few months. Your post just got me thinking that its one of the things we will have to get done early in the project. Has anyone on this forum had there zed shell sandblasted? I think Rod (z restorations) used to get it done few a couple hundred dollars but cannot really remember. Thanks Ash Quote
mossy Posted January 18, 2009 Posted January 18, 2009 I'm getting mine done next week for about $500, I'm using garnet blasting though. Quote
PeterAllen Posted January 18, 2009 Posted January 18, 2009 I had mine done 12 months ago. I had quotations from $1000 for sand blasting to $2500 for plastic bead blasting. The reported big concern with sand blasting is that an inexperienced operator can overheat the panel and cause it to stress relieve and warp. When you strip the shell you find there are not too many large panels anyway, i.e. no door skins or front mudguards (fenders). My decisions was to go to a place that was known and recommended by guys who had already restored cars. You also need to consider having an etch primer or the like applied straight away. I was going to have mine soda blasted but they could not apply a primer. The hassle of taking it to another place for priming with the risk of rain, or acidic hands being rubbed over it, made me choose a one-stop place. I went for the $1000 sand blast and prime, and I couldn't be happier. Rust damage in the usual places - poorly repaired previously. Must have removed 10kg of bog! (edit - Ignore the title of the second photo - it is a photo after blasting but before I removed the gearbox mounts) Quote
XRQTR Posted January 18, 2009 Author Posted January 18, 2009 Yep well that's what I'm talking about is blasting as well as priming, you really don't want to take a chance once you have stripped the tin of all it's protection, it's a recipe for disaster as quite often from the time you strip to the time you finish can be many months so it makes sense to protect the tin as much as possible. I know of some places that are charging over $1000 just to blast then etching is extra, this is for car bodies of course not chassis sections, at this point we are looking at setting an hourly rate as some jobs are easier than others. When you have things like filler and multiple layers of paint a job might take longer than anticipated so an hourly rate would be the fairest way for both the customers as well as ourselves, the last thing we want is to rip off people but we need to make sure it remains profitable enough to stay in business. We will as I said in my first post also offer a full panel resto, rust repair and paint service so the car is in the one place from start to finish thereby decresing further any chance of contamination of the shell should someone choose to go down that path. I know alot of guys want to do some of the work themselves and we are looking into potentially allowing this to hapen at the shop, it really is just a matter of working out how to charge for something like this for it to be feasible. Mate I would be very careful about that... Having known it to happen in other shops and the owner becomes liable for works completed there. Should a person without experience zap themselves, your screwed... Should an inexperienced person leave the hoist safety off when under and it fall on them, your screwed.... Absolute insurance nightmare. Or even simpler things, they use your tools and break one, is it their fault or was it time for the tool to break? What happens fall down inside some inner guard to remain for the ages? Quote
XRQTR Posted January 19, 2009 Author Posted January 19, 2009 At this point nothing is set in concrete, it's just an idea to help people trying to stick to a budget most of the time they would be supervised when using dangerous equipment in particular. Like I said though it's just a thought at the minute nothing more than that. Now on a different note we will be offering BBQ days for clubs and forums based clubs to come out and have a look at the shop and any work being undertaken at the time, so keep it in mind as a possible social function/get together. XRQTR Posted January 22, 2009 Author Posted January 22, 2009 Ok news just to hand: The decision has been made and we will be based out of Geelong, spoke to the current operator today and left him with a deposit, we will be opening up in around 4 weeks but may start taking cars in about a week earlier. We will be offering budget resprays as a opening special for as little as $1200 for up to a full sized sedan all through till the end of March, this will include solid paint colors (metallic extra), no repairs just a straight rub down and door closed blow over. We can of course work something out if you have some dents you need sorted as well but just wanted to start with a decent special rate to get some work in the door. This is great for those that have a daily driver that might be looking a bit tired and can't justify buying a new car, so a spruce up of the duco might give that old girl a new lease on life, just what the doctor ordered. If you would like to get your car in I'd suggest you get in early as it will be a case of first in best dressed and once people get wind of the discounted price I rekn we may have a mini stampede on our hands. Thanks Stef Quote
Timwell Posted January 24, 2009 Posted January 24, 2009 Hey all, new to this forum but have had a zed before which I restored from the ground up. Needless to say it was a steep learning curve. very steep indeed. One such learning curve was this it was extreemly hard if not impossible to remove all of the sand from the car once it had been sand blasted. Cost me nothing after the paint shop gave me some real bad advise regarding mixing the paint and hardener so they did it for me. Cost about $600 for them. Cut a heap of rust out incl floor pannels, doglegs, kiskboards, fire wall, chassi rails abeaver pannel and boot floor. Included in my pain was the replacement of a terrible sun roof. Eventually got there but the removal of sand never really happened...unless there is a trick to it. Quote
XRQTR Posted January 24, 2009 Author Posted January 24, 2009 you obviously opted for the budget blast You get what you pay for Quote
Timwell Posted January 24, 2009 Posted January 24, 2009 Sand is sand as far as I am concearned ($1000 sand is just as annoyinig as $10 sand ) ........whats the tip/deal with removing it all then?? Quote
maddos Posted January 24, 2009 Posted January 24, 2009 Well technically they shouldn't be using sand as a blast media due to the silica content. As for getting rid of it all, try blowing with compressed air a couple of times for hard to get to places. Quote
Timwell Posted January 24, 2009 Posted January 24, 2009 well, I tried that and all I can say is hindsight is the best perspective. If I did it again. I would deliver the car with all of the holes plugged really firmly. And then ask the dude to not spray the holes. A little sand (garnet, beads, soda...what have you) may get in...however it will save a hell of a head ache later. Either way despite the head ache I would definatly sand (garnet, beads, soda...what have you ) blast the car again before beggining rust repair. Pays dividends later in the project when you begin to discover more and more rust. Quote
XRQTR Posted February 2, 2009 Author Posted February 2, 2009 We will be at the shop from Monday the 16th of Feb, we will still be getting things organized and setting up shop but you're more than welcome to pop your heads in (don't forget the donuts) for a sticky beak. Remember we will be having the door opener blow over paint special till the end of March, if not for yours then maybe the missus car (save you buying her a new one LOL), we'll even put a bow on it for you Thanks Stef Phoenix Street Cars Quote
xa1973 Posted February 15, 2009 Posted February 15, 2009 All very good comments My own experience, I never media blast cars, as said previously, silica residue, sand residue, heat warp and buckle. Garnet is used for industrial use and should never be anywhere near a car, soda is good if you must, bead blasting generates too much heat, sand under too much pressure has the same effect You pay for what you get? Ive seen some real crap from some so called pro's, who run for cover when you take a good look at their mess For what its worth, I always acid dip my shells and panels and then epoxy prime the bare metal An hourly rate is the only way to go, and keep the jockeys out of your workshop!!!!! Cheers Quote
Kent Posted February 15, 2009 Posted February 15, 2009 interesting! do you know if there are any acid dip companies in sydney who could take a shell? and roughly how much does it cost to have it done? stef, damn shame i am not in melbourne, that sounds like an awesome deal! Quote
xa1973 Posted February 15, 2009 Posted February 15, 2009 Not off hand Ive got my own set up Take a look in the Industrial / Engineering section of the phone book or look on the net for your nearest Cheers Quote
Kent Posted February 15, 2009 Posted February 15, 2009 gee, that must be some setup, i am trying to convince my mate we should turn his pool into one thanks, will google it and see what i can come up with Quote
xa1973 Posted February 15, 2009 Posted February 15, 2009 Hello Mate LOL, you dont need a pool, two tanks big enough for your body, a lifting jig on a rail runner , a couple of husky pumps and some ancillary gear Cheers Quote
lightmaster240z Posted February 15, 2009 Posted February 15, 2009 I will sell you a pool ;D ;D cheap or a water tank Quote

Thanks Stef Hello Mate I applaud you on your tenacity for a new venture in these economic times A $1200 quick blow over!!?? Some peoples perception of a respray compared to what a blow over is are two very different animals. I would make it very clear your level of service and what you are offering for $1200, ancillary strip and refit?, straight acrylic?, enamel?, clear over colour?, colour sand?, cut and polish? Cheers Quote

XRQTR Posted February 16, 2009 Author Posted February 16, 2009 Some peoples perception of a respray compared to what a blow over is are two very different animals. I would make it very clear your level of service and what you are offering for $1200, ancillary strip and refit?, straight acrylic?, enamel?, clear over colour?, colour sand?, cut and polish? Cheers Most of it is explained and if people need further info then a simple call or even a pm will quickly resolve any queries they may have, no strip and refit included, it is 2K solid colors, no clear, no need really, but as I said in my OP any of this can be done by us or you can save yourself a few dollars and do it yourself. One guy is bringing in an effie that he is pretty much stripping himself before he brings it, we're trying to work within peoples budgets so we offer them the choice, maybe we should change the name to JetSpray I've already had heaps asking for extras thinking they are included, one guy yesterday wanted his jambs done right through, even at a discounted price he was shocked then i told him he didn't really need it, but that I'd happily take his money if he insisted, and told him he would save at least $1500 he started breathing again. I know some don't understand but as I say it's all in the asking, if you don't then you won't, know that is. Most though understand when explained why it involves what it does for the price, and that the equivalent from some other shops could be at least twice the price. Quote
