mrp69 Posted September 16, 2008 Posted September 16, 2008 hey guys i wanted to know if i purchased a whole R32 GTR could you convert the whole running gear and motor from the GTR to fit a 240z meaning you would have active 4WD?? and be able to switch to rear will drive?? has this been done if so where can i find a read up?? and what sort of $$ would i be looking at in labour to do this? cause i can get a car fairly cheap running but cant be registered so parts are useable. peter Quote
George Posted September 16, 2008 Posted September 16, 2008 hey peter, anything can be done with enough cash. i dare say this will not be a cheap project. there are easier and cheaper ways to get some power in a zed. for these types of question check out hybridz. you'll find info there for sure. zedevan Posted September 16, 2008 Posted September 16, 2008 apparently its been done in japan, but it sits the engine really far forward, to the point that its nearly touching the radiator mount. The other thing i remember reading about it was about the difficulty in getting the 2wd/4wd thing working in a different chassis, but there are companies which make parts to lock it in either mode which can be used. there were scans of some jap magazine floating about somewhere, prob hybridz as stated by george. my thoughts are you should just buy the gtr and sell off all the parts you don't need for a normal rb conversion. I was thinking of doing this, but dont have space for a car to sit here for half a year or so until i can actually start working on it, unless ofcourse i come across a car thats cheap enough to make me overlook this issue. If you really want 4wd just get an r32, its not like they are particularly ugly cars? How much is the car? I'm assuming/hoping an uncomplied r32 would be easy to find for <10g? Quote
Moderators Zedman240® Posted September 16, 2008 Moderators Posted September 16, 2008 If you need that info, it might be smart to chase up that owner with the Chev V8 4wd 260Z 2+2 that frequents the hill climb events. If you do a search on youtube for a chev 260Z 4wd, I'm sure that one will pop up. Quote
RBZ 260 Posted September 16, 2008 Posted September 16, 2008 the front wheel drive part will be the difficult one cause z struts are lot further away from the firewall than the R32 ones. hence the reason that the engine has to sit so far forwards because from memory the front drive shafts are around the center of the engine. there are other ways but just as difficult and expensive. maybe a different type of gearbox/diff but that renders the R32 driveline to scrap. another option is to cut shut between the 2 chasis. ie use r32 floor pan and weld the s30 body. but this will be almost impossible to pass through RTA. and again the strut tower positions relative to firewall will cause lot of grief. I did have a look at this and done some measurments but seems too much of a head F to be worth wile. what other people done is use a lower full 4wd chasis from a landrover or hilux etc... and than just bolt the body of a car on top, adapt the engine to the driveline and of you go.... etc...... but that increases weight as now u have another fairly heavy chasis added to the car.than to take advantage of the grip you got and to overcome driveline loses adn extra weight probably need something bit more gruntier than a 2.6 straight 6. more like a gen4 7.0L v8 with couple of turbos or superchargers bolted. than it will be a weapon. but its more feasable than the proposed r32 gtr stuff. herrods Posted September 16, 2008 Posted September 16, 2008 Personally, I think you will be better off sticking with a RWD, less of a "too hard basket" for the AWD. Also, correct me if I'm wrong, but as far as you can switch a GTR is 20% front, 80% rear. Quote
sco_aus Posted September 16, 2008 Posted September 16, 2008 What about Pulsar GTiR running gear? Might be another option, smaller vehicle, still a good engine, I imagine you could put the engine closer to the firewall too. If it works out, maybe a RB infront of the gearbox Quote
Robstar Posted September 16, 2008 Posted September 16, 2008 Perhaps you could get the R32 and 240z to go out on a date, maybe they'll hit it off! Then in a couple of years when they have a baby, ta-dah! R240z. Quote
mrp69 Posted September 16, 2008 Author Posted September 16, 2008 well something are worth thinking about and if you dont ask questions you dont get answers i can get the car cheap but if it aint possible i might just keep the motor peter Quote
Brabham Posted September 16, 2008 Posted September 16, 2008 That 4wd Zed looks strangely cool . Is it real or photoshop? Quote
mrp69 Posted September 16, 2008 Author Posted September 16, 2008 hahahaa will do it just like that for you pauly Quote
herrods Posted September 16, 2008 Posted September 16, 2008 I doubt the GTiR motor and gearbox/transfer case would fit east west across the z engine bay, they are big, but they are narrow. If you dont want the motor, I'll take it, motore, wiring and ECU Quote
mrp69 Posted September 16, 2008 Author Posted September 16, 2008 if i convert my car ill be selling my V8 and all nuts and bolts that go with it also all the running gear cause i would love to have my car with close to 600hp at the wheels and want it to be a daily driver. Quote
sco_aus Posted September 17, 2008 Posted September 17, 2008 oh yeh, forgot about the east-west thing, thought that would make it even coooler Quote
herrods Posted September 17, 2008 Posted September 17, 2008 cause i would love to have my car with close to 600hp at the wheels and want it to be a daily driver. 600hp, and a daily? bunny hop much? Trust me I would love one of these too, but I also have sympathy for my... head/legs/ears... etc My Old daily s15 had 400hp, it was awesome, but was just flat out impractical, i couldn't move smoothly in heavy traffic, any bump/crack/ripple in the road would rearrange my lower half, and I did 500km a week, and the fuel bill is ridiculous. P.s What is your V8? what running gear do you speak of? how much? Quote
mrp69 Posted September 17, 2008 Author Posted September 17, 2008 check out the member projects page and you will find my car 3.5l Rover V8 Supra 5 speed with a 3.54 diff Quote
Robstar Posted September 17, 2008 Posted September 17, 2008 cause i would love to have my car with close to 600hp at the wheels and want it to be a daily driver. Now, let me just share my two cents on this. R32 GTR to 240z conversion is entirely possible, expensive, but very possible. But to have a daily driver with 600hp in a 240z frame is very impractical, I take it this is going to be a drag car? Because you'll be torque steering this baby all the way to work every day unless you've got some mad driveline/wheels/whatever to hold it all down. Even with my VH41, I'll be staying around 300kw or it just becomes a little ridiculous on the streets. Quote
Fullnoisezed Posted March 7, 2015 Posted March 7, 2015 I'm doing this now, I have worked out that the gtr front diff needs to be moved forward 65-70mm to allow the engine to sit back in the engine bay. 260z-R in the making in Aus Quote
