reverendzed Posted July 28, 2008 Posted July 28, 2008 Hi guys, thought I'd post a few pics of some of the recent repair and fabrication work that I have done on my sons Zed. I did a fair bit of panel work in my younger days and have enjoyed pulling out the old skills again. I was taught panel work 'old school' which meant you had to shape, shrink, expand, dolly and hammer until you had something as good as the original. With the rear valence almost rusted out I came up with a new design for the exhaust with reinforced corners for strength. With the fuel filler panel which sits behind the filler door I had to start from scratch and fabricate a completely new section. Would be good to get your feedback on these couple of items as I am considering putting my limited time up for grabs to Auszcar members who need parts or panels fabricated at a fraction of the cost of a panel shop. I have now got my backyard workshop up to scratch and I could be available for small panel work and fabrication and rust repairs. Let me know if anyone thinks that this may be of service to the members of this forum, it may help some of the younger guys to keep some money in their pocket as they go through that exhaustive resto. Rev. Quote
reverendzed Posted July 28, 2008 Author Posted July 28, 2008 few more pics The fuel filler surround is about 80% at this stage with a few internal welds on the seams then primed and spot welded back in, more pics to follow Quote
RBZ 260 Posted July 28, 2008 Posted July 28, 2008 Good work Rev and very nice of you to give the younger ppl a hand with their Z and try to help them save some money. i try to help too but sometimes seems to be bit of waste of time oh well. we can only try and help but its up to them if they want to recieve it. i bet your son cant wait till the car gets done. just keep him busy at it. like i always say no work is better than your own. keep it up. C.A.R. Posted July 28, 2008 Posted July 28, 2008 Good stuff Dave With regards to helping out the younger members, just make sure you won't be 'used' & that your not biteing off more than you can chew... Quote
reverendzed Posted July 28, 2008 Author Posted July 28, 2008 I know what you mean Lurch, but I do enjoy it and it gets my head out of my regular week. Hopefully I can earn some pocket money along the way to keep going with my Zed. Rev Quote

Administrators gav240z Posted July 29, 2008 Administrators Posted July 29, 2008 Rev. Dave is in Sth East Melbourne, guys. Just goes to show though, if the Z experts in Australia were a bit more active on this forum and posted things about rust repair etc.. then they would probably pick up a bit of business from it. Mr240z Posted July 29, 2008 Posted July 29, 2008 Hi gaz240z i take it your the boss of this site .Mate do you know of any good zed workshops and or panel shops arround sydney .Hay gav can you send me some pic's of your car please at mrz240@unwired.com.au Thanks .Paul Quote
reverendzed Posted July 29, 2008 Author Posted July 29, 2008 hi guys, Yep lurch is right i'm south of the border! still interested in doing any work for guys down this end of the country though. Rev. Quote
Toecutter Posted July 29, 2008 Posted July 29, 2008 Properly done rust repairs are pricey so having someone that knows a Z and takes his time would be very good for alot of Vic members here and as you say keep you buying all those good bits for the car. Dave, knowing the condition of most Z's (unfortunatley the term Swiss cheese comes to mind) I reckon you might find yourself busy for many weekends to come if your rep for rust repairs keeps spreading! I've also got some area's that need attention I'll have to see you about at some time! Sulio Quote
zedevan Posted July 29, 2008 Posted July 29, 2008 there are a few parts i was just going to ignore for a few years. I got the guy who welded up my guards after mounting the flares to do a few other bits and pieces and as far as i'm concerned he could have done a better job, but probably just simply didn't care, so would be good for someone like yourself to be able to do it for the care factor, yet alone the money! when your son has his license and the zed on the road (and mine is back on it too) in a couple of years we'll have to make SYG a bit of a warrigul cruise Quote
Brabham Posted July 29, 2008 Posted July 29, 2008 Hi Rev, Nice repairs to the Zed. What kind of welder did you use? Do you know the relative benefits of arc vs gasless mig vs mig vs Tig and in which situations you would use each. I have been told that arc is structurally the strongest weld and am wondering which way to go. Most of my rust is in the floor :'( and rear valence. Thanks. Quote
reverendzed Posted July 29, 2008 Author Posted July 29, 2008 Hey Brabham, You can straight away forget the idea of arc, the metal used in automotive is much to light a guage and you would blow through. Gasless (with the right wire) or gas mig welding is the best go for anything automotive and gives an A1 penetration and fill of the weld. Rev. Quote

I look after the website and that kind of thing. I have help from Sulio (toecutter), Dale, Lurch, Craig ZZZ8 and a few others. There are pics of my car in the gallery section. I haven't done much lately with it as I've been on holiday (well a working one) in Europe. Not familiar with Sydney myself, but I saw you posted another thread hopefully someone can help out with a reputable shop in the area. Quote
reverendzed Posted July 30, 2008 Author Posted July 30, 2008 The response from the forum at least with posts seems as though there is some interest in my offer of rust repairs and fabrication so with this in mind I'm willing to take 10% of anything I make from doing this and donate it to AUSZCAR....everyone wins! I have been told that arc is structurally the strongest weld and am wondering which way to go. Most of my rust is in the floor :'( and rear valence. Thanks. Just to make sure to make this clear as Rev allready said what happens with using arc. pretty much use arc if u want swiss cheese effect on your car. ive noticed with arc anthing less than 1.5mm thick will just burn through.even using small diameter electrodes. Gas mig is probably the best if u cannot afford the tig. tig is bit nicer finish and has less heat which reduces warping. but even a half decent mig will set you back over $1200. than you got to pay for BOC bottle rental and gas itself which is at least 200+ per year for one recharge. (last year i used 2 bottles) havent used the gasless ones but ive heard mixed results. mostly negative. Someone else commented if workshops advertised here could had made money. lets face it everyone hates paying top dolar, so dont think they do well. everyone knows what workshop charges. and they have to. but lot of people are looking at saving a few hard earned $. Hence Rev got bit of interest in his offer. Again Rev good work and hope someone benefits from your unselfish offer. pitty im overloaded and can't offer any of my services. cause it annoys the hell out of me for some prices people pay for some easy work. Glen Posted July 31, 2008 Posted July 31, 2008 Hey Rev, are those stripes painted on or are they decals? cheers glen Quote
reverendzed Posted August 1, 2008 Author Posted August 1, 2008 Hey Glen, The stripes were done by my bro who used a new kind of auto vinyl that is done in a slight sheen, fully washable and guaranteed for 10 years, I like the almost matt look as it helps mine to 'grunge' a little in it's look by giving it a contrast not only in color but in shine. Can probably get more of this stuff if anyone wants some. Rev. Quote
Glen Posted August 1, 2008 Posted August 1, 2008 i would be very interested rev, i thought vinyl would be to hard with the bonnet hump but it seems to be sitting nice on yours. I would be after 2 main white stripes running along the whole car. glossy if possible. I can give you some exact measurments (width) if you like as then i could get a quote off you. thanks (getting excited) glen. Quote
Glen Posted August 6, 2008 Posted August 6, 2008 ok i will go through another avenue, signwave in moorabbin have the same vinyl. Quote
